  • This puppy training video goes over how to train your puppy to slow down and enjoy his meal without wolfing it down. This same exercise is also a great way to work on the issue of puppies who have a tendency to resource guard food. I also describe how you can use this game in a shelter environment.

    I had the opposite problem with one of my dogs - he'd take forever eating a meal. He would remove kibbles from his bowl, line them up and select the best ones first... who knows what his criteria for selection was. 🤣

      @@kikopup Thanks Emily. I sorted it a few years ago by putting his bowl down for 15 minutes and then removing it. Now we have a completely different feeding ritual and kibble is only about 30% of his diet. He likes to work for his food.

    Important question: so, I give my puppy food in the bowl. She gobbles it all down fast. I have better treats, and she knows I do, but if I were to approach with them, she eats faster and more tense. How do I proceed? Toss them to her? Approach anyway and hand them? Try to call/motivate her off the food bowl to me to get the treats? (Which is what I tried with a first try today).
    Would really love to get advice from you Kikopup - we really need the help!

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому +1

      If you had a puppy that resource guarded, and they thought everything you have is better than what they have, you can stop any sort of guarding. With my dogs that guard, they will back away from high value food or a toy and let another dog eat it to come back to me because they know I always will make it so that they get something better. Usually the issue with dogs not eating their meal is that they are overfed or that they are eating a low quality food so the dog is choosing the food that is more healthy for themselves like real meat over corn. My other dogs are excited about Kibble because its a novelty for them, because they dont eat kibble for their meal.

    I did this but now he waits very long before eating or he follows me wanting for the higher value treat..... and sometimes I don't have something with that higher value even If I directly put real meat in his bowl he'll follow me expecting something extra. And while I can touch his bowl while he's eating I can't touch him, he barks o growls. What can I do ☹

      This exercise is to reduce how fast they eat and can help with guarding when you walk by, touching is different. I have a resource guarding protocol here: dogmantics.com/resource-guarding-protocol/ I also suggest getting the book Mine! By Jean Donaldson

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому +4

      I wrote a resource guarding protocol here: dogmantics.com/resource-guarding-protocol/ It really depends on the specific dog's triggers etc. Say if the dog is more likely to guard in the kitchen you could begin the sessions outside with no bowls, with the dogs at a distance doing the taking turns taking treats game, where the guarding dog sees the other dog eat a treat and he gets marked and rewarded for it. As the first step

      I’ve been working on this with my two dogs, and have made some progress where my resource guarding dog is letting the other one closer and closer. However, once the other dog gets close enough, he starts actually stealing the food. At this point, my resource guarding dog will eventually snap at him. I feel like this situation is probably getting counter-productive at this point and don’t really know what to do. Is the problem that I actually need to teach the other dog to not steal food?
      Also, while this training has helped my two dogs get along better. My dog still resource guards from other dogs. Does this training only work per each dog?

    My puppy is resource guarding and it breaks my heart. I actually taught her the Drop it cue, but then she picked up everything on walks to exchange it for treats, so I stopped again, and now I don't know what to do. I am living with other people and fearing that she will guard something and they won't recogize it and get bitten. Also, even though I know it is kinda normal dog behaviour, and I shouldn't take it personal, I feel like it has broken our bond. I just can't forget how hateful towards me she seemed in her guarding behaviour... Getting a dog has been my biggest wish for all my life, and now I just hope that I can be happy with her one day and not just go through 10 years or more of not trusting her not to bite me when I want to take something dangerous out her mouth and have no treats present to exchange.

      I am so sorry you are having that issue. I suggest getting help from a trainer who uses positive reinforcement with a dog who is not a young puppy so they can help you read the dog's warning signs. It is going to take quite a few sessions of training and generalization to work with resource guarding of food. I suggest reading this protocol to learn more about resource guarding dogmantics.com/resource-guarding-protocol/

    I'm planning on getting a puppy next year and I've been doing as much research as I can to be prepared. Thank you so much for posting such helpful videos! Is it possible to avoid or reduce resource guarding food if you were to forgo the bowl altogether and handfeed the puppy from the start as a preventative measure?

    • @kombinatsiya6000
      @kombinatsiya6000 3 роки тому +2

      Dude, one tip: dogsit as much as you can before you get a puppy. It can be overwhelming if you've never had a dog, but just a little experience makes a huge difference. Especially when they are puppies and you have to potty train them.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому +3

      In my opinion is it genetic, some dogs no matter what you do will never guard food.. even if set up in terrible situations, others, the issue can be much worse and will need much more careful planning, even if the dog is never having a bad experience, a new situation they have never been in might trigger the response so with a dog like that a lot more training and generalization is needed.

It was very interesting to watch this video because I now see what mistakes we made with our previous dogs which caused them to eat very quickly and never chew any of their kibble. With our new puppy, I will be trying this out and seeing if I can make a positive impact because right now if I touch his bowl, I see the eating speed increase. So once again, thanks!!!

    Thank you for the great video! It came out just when I needed it as my 1.5 y.o. dog growled at me the other day when I got near him while he was having a raw bone. I thought we were over this exercise as he often (if not always) bring his high-value chewing toys and kongs to eat them just beside me ever since we worked this when he was younger ( he used to guard food and spaces heavily) but I guess a little positive reinforcement won't harm anyone haha. The video helped me a lot to understand the criteria and how to work over different value treats or stimuli around, so again thanks for your awesome channel!

    Hi Emily. I have some foster pups from an abusive breeder. The 'breeder' is facing multiple felony charges now. The pups go crazy over their food and can get quite aggressive with each other. Thank you for posting this video, because until now I couldn't find any good resources on how to address this problem. I currently have six of them, so I think I have to modify my old strategies to something more like this.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  Рік тому

      maybe if you just need to feed them put them in different areas where they cant see each other while you feed them. You might even experiment with low value free feeding... with guidance from a vet or vet behaviorist if they think they might over eat. But perhaps having access to food 24/7 could also reduce the panic when being fed that food might not be available later. Perhaps begin by separation and having free feeding accessible. Again if they are so panicked they might over eat so make sure that free feeding will help rather than make them sick.

    Hi Emily
    I.believe your techniques are the best I’ve found on all of UA-cam. You’re absolutely amazing and I learn something new every time I watch your videos. Your pacing is wonderful and calm. It allows me to absorb the information you are presenting and solidify and reinforce the techniques. I do have one question. What treat bag do you recommend? I’ve tried several and haven’t found one that works me. I’m 6’5” tall and weigh 260 lbs. my hands are large and long. I have difficulty getting my hand in and out without getting hung up on the bag, which disrupts the flow of my training sessions. I’ve noticed that the ones you use seem very wide open and allow you to get the treat and deliver it to your dogs smoothly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jeff
