I don’t have this game but from what I know of it you can play as Bowser right. If you can you should play as Bowser and your sister should play regularly.

Really important tip - the Bowser player should ALWAYS look at the Gamepad! There's been so many players who failed the climbing minigame, because they were looking at the TV, while Bowser's button prompts are on the Gamepad.
When it comes to those fire cannons - Bowser sets a total of 4 traps on the first climb, and 6 traps on the second climb, but Team Mario doesn't know where they are. If you play as Bowser, you get to sectetly see that information on the Wii U Gamepad, and you yourself set where you want those traps to be.
Please do this again, with all CPUs being on Master difficulty. Master teammates are really good for your surivival, while Master Bowser is really dangerous, and becomes actually quite challanging to deal with his minigames.
