    Most of the "ones that suck" he was really good in. It was the movies that sucked, not him.

    Let's be honest. Have you ever seen him looking bad, giving a bad performance? No, he's literally flawless as an actor.

    I loved him in Riddick.
    It's a shame he didn't get an Oscar for Dredd... It was a masterpiece, and he didn't play Judge Dredd; he WAS Judge Dredd.

    • @BigJayKaner
      @BigJayKaner 8 років тому +6

      I was 11 when 2000AD started and fell in love with it from the very first episode. Never missed a copy, every week without fail (right into my early 20's lol). So many great stories and characters. Dredd was always my favourite though. I have to agree with everything you, and Santiago have said. I was so disappointed with Stallone's version. But Karl Urban WAS Dredd. Absolutely brilliant take on him, just how I pictured him and he brought him to life for me. His reply at the start of the film to the chief judge's order to throw Anderson into the deep end, where he says "It's all the deep end" was pure perfection. The only disappointment about that film is the lack of anymore. As much as I love Star Trek I wish it had being Dredd with all the sequels...

    • @Kartissa
      @Kartissa 8 років тому +10

      *'Most actors reject a film where there face doesn't show up a lot, and almost all reject one that their face isn't shown.'* While Urban is on record stating that he'd have rejected Dredd if his face *WAS* shown....

    • @BigJayKaner
      @BigJayKaner 8 років тому +6

      Kartissa I didn't know he'd said that but it goes to show his understanding of the role. No wonder he was so good.

      ***** He's a big fan of Judge Dredd. He knows the comic version very well.

    • @BigJayKaner
      @BigJayKaner 8 років тому +2

      ***** Hey no worries. It's a great comic. Opened my mind to so many ideas as a young boy. There were many long ongoing stories but it always had great little one off ones too. One of my favourite's that stuck in my mind, to give you an idea of it, was the story about man's first mission to find the edge of the universe. The crew finally gets there and as they stick their heads through the edge of the universe, you can see all the galaxies our universe are the atoms that make up the fridge door of some alien's kitchen, with the alien in there cooking tea. Like I say, loved that sort of stuff as a kid... Ah who am I kidding, I still do lol.

    Are you shitting me? Riddick? Don't get me wrong, I agree with the analysis of the movie itself, but Urban's subplot and performance are the best parts of an otherwise garbled mess. His character has the most depth of all the cast, and he fucking nails it. A loyal general that is content to serve that is being manipulated by his sea-hag of a wife because she lusts for power. I don't know about anyone else, but the only reason I enjoyed Riddick was because of Vaako's subplot and Urban's performance.

      I can't believe that even made the suck list, let alone the top spot. I think the most ringing endorsement of his performance in that role is that I've seen Dredd, Riddick, and 2 Star Trek movies a LOT and I had no idea that that was Karl Urban playing Vaako...never had a clue...the character was so well played that I never even bothered to look at who was actually playing Vaako...

    • @stickiedmin6508
      @stickiedmin6508 8 років тому +10

      I agree - I wish there were more movies like the Riddick series, that try to build a whole sci-fi *universe* around themselves. The kind that, like the Star Wars flicks, make you want to find out more about the history, or mythology of the different factions and worlds. Movies where you get the sense that the universe they're set in is much, *much* bigger than what you've been shown.
      I don't know whether movie producers think that films like that are unpopular, or bound to lose money, or too much effort for not enough reward, or what...
      But yeh, I agree. Moar Riddicks!

      You know a cross over between Riddick and the predator will be a hell of a fight. Hunter Vs Hunter , savage vs savage, I would pay 50$ to see that movie on cinema. But at least 70% fighting not chatting or setting the story line

      @stickiedmin6508 8 років тому +1

      DarkEmperor00 That's a *really* good idea dude... I'd pay to see that movie.
      The backstories for both sides have already been established, so we don't need to be told any of the history - just tons of time for *hunting!*

    Even if the movies are bad, Urban puts everything he's got into is performances. He's always good, and often the best thing about a movie he's in, precisely because they're often generic action films where nobody else is giving an honest effort. He stands out, and stands alone as THE actor to portray iconic characters without his own ego interfering.

    As a regular fan of Urban, I don't see that any of these 5 "bad" performances were bad at all. You may not like what he had been asked to do, or the final result of what the movie brings, but I don't see that Karl Urban was the problem. Blame the director, blame the budget, blame the story, blame the target audience, but don't blame the actor....unless you're trying to justify a "bad" title to a youtube video.

      Almost Human was my top show on T.V. it scratched the itch that a show like Nathan Fillian's Castle couldn't because that show is so focused on love. He's an all-around good actor, but I agree Dredd was great with him in the lead. I don't care that it was a Clint Eastwood impression - it fit perfectly. Also, for me he stole every scene in Star Trek Beyond.

    • @Nebulafox
      @Nebulafox 8 років тому +4

      I agree. Star Trek Beyond allowed him to show just how great an actor he is. I thought his interactions with Spock were some of the best parts of the movie. He definitely reminds me of DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy, and brings more to the role. I actually liked him in most of those "sucky" roles, but Dredd is a righteous choice for #1.

    So much love for Dredd. We love his commitment and lack of ego shown by keeping the iconic helmet on for the entire film. He stayed true to the source material and was rewarded.

    Karl's performance as Bones in Star Trek is my favorite. As far as the new wave of actors for the TOS characters goes, I feel his performance is the best match to the original actor. I really can't say enough good things about it. I definitely look forward to seeing more of Karl Urban in Star Trek and other movies.

    The first thing i saw Karl in was Riddick. He really held the dark vibes for the entire story, carrying the antagonist role so that the protagonist could play off his personna. Regardless of script or outfit, Karl easily informed the audience what was going on and what side he was versus that of the hero. His acting wasnt a tragedy either. That movie led me to doom and then a few others. I've never really come across anything off other than the milk farmer he played once....but i can agree with that weird looking dino thing and xena. Then again, that's a bad decision, that doesn't mean he can't act
