Thanks. I new at this... handbrake on my 1974 Mini only engages one side, other side barely does anything. quadrants seems to move. could be that the handbrake lever and drum needs adjustment or is anything else seized up maybe, or stretched cable... ? whats more likely? maybe video on this would be cool 🙂✌️
Is there any info online for how to rebuild the classic Mini brake servo (brake booster)? Mine needs a rebuild or replacement and I didn't want to hack the servo too much if there are some tips on how to open it up. Thanks for the videos!
Great video! I just replaced my rear wheel bearings (they're the slanted roller style) and now when I tighten the hub nuts to spec it becomes really hard to turn the hub. Do you have any idea of what could be wrong? I've double checked that all the bearings and seals and dust covers are in place and bearings all greased up, but still when I tighten it more than fingertight it doesn't turn freely at all.
Did you make sure to include the spacer between the two bearings? I found that if the spacer is missing the whole assembly binds when you torque the hub nut to the specified value.
@@deathghost13 The set i have had the spacer built into the bearings, the inside center ring was poking out a lot more on the inside so when they are in place they touch each other. Could still check that they really do though.
+Kolmord that sounds right. Another possibility might be that the outer races aren't seated properly. It's probably a good idea to take the hub off, pop off the seals carefully and check that they are.
@@deathghost13 just took them apart and checked the races, they seemed to be properly seated but i gave them a few taps just for good measure and put it back together. Still doesn't spin freely at all when tightened up 🤔
Just found your channel, exciting stuff!! Question on the handbrake adjustment video and the reference to your Brake shoe assembly and adjustment video where you show how 'tight' the rear brakes should be set to get the correct response when braking. But in this handbrake video when you check to see that the handbrake is not stopping the wheel, the wheel seems to spin very easily compared to the Brake assembly video.
Thanks Bradley. Good eye, and yes in this case the brakes could be a turn or two out of adjustment. On the other hand, the drag of the rear brakes you see when adjusting them will be reduced a bit after some heavy use of the brakes as the shoes are forced to align even better in the brake drum. If you've adjusted them to the point where there is a fair bit of resistance, it's not uncommon for the wheel to spin pretty freely after a week of driving.
Maybe this is a stupid question, but do you know if you need to spin the nut in the same direction on left-sided cars to tighten the cable ? Thanks, and great video once again!
That's a roadside flare. They are standard equipment on all Japanese vehicles. A lot of them go missing or thrown out, leaving you with a handy clip for putting a flashlight in ;)
Would it be possible to do a video on changing the handbrake cables? My handbrake cables have stretched too much, so the adjuster doesn't help and now the handbrake is very ineffective. I was told to replace them (but Minispares is currently out of stock) and I'm a bit worried about how to tackle the job.
Vinay Shekhar the next time we are changing them on a car we will try to film the process. It’s quite simple, nothing to be afraid of tackling yourself
That's what I was thinking! After viewing his video of proper way to lift mini with a jack, I was very surprised when mini was lifted under the battery box. Surely there's better points to raise from in the rear.
lol its cool : great Chanel i use to have Grass Tracker Mini when i was younger. nice to see a classic icon and great workshop you have is the rent high on it
I feel like it is absolutely essential that a Mini can do a handbrake turn. It's in its DNA:-)
How did I not know about your channel?
Instantly subscribed.
Great explanation. Very happy with the results on my Mini! Just finished the job.
Great tip. What did you do in the rear adjuster? Did you just tighten it? Thnx
My handbrake has always been shite, may have to try this ahah
Those center caps... 👌🏼

good episode, really love your channel, very informative and logic information.
is there any plans for a su carb episode?🙂
KungKrydda it’s in the works. Going to do very comprehensive su tuning video soon

Any idea why i adjust my breaks using the square adjuster get them right but once i use the handbrake it won’t release off one rear wheel?

Lemme guess... with that res thing and a Japanese yen found, you imported it from japan, right? ( I’m from japan 😛)

The cable is the same so the direction you turn is the same. It will be pretty obvious when you are doing it as to what direction to turn :)
Thanks mate !
mini noob here, what is that red thing removed at 1:53? I have this black clip in my car but don't know what its for...

Thanks! I'll check if the local spares suppliers have stock and give the job a try.
Nice vid, although I wouldn't jack the car up from the battery tray - the subframes are much more appropriate.

how come my handbrake stop working every few weeks
Check your brakes, e-brake cable (stretching?), and adjustment assembly on the handle.
Does the owner have an Instagram? Love the vintage Alpine stereo in this JDM Mini
