I really liked your first side rope a ton .USing that little bead as a guide is a very classy move .. I must try that one ..It reminded me of the pastery rope at Wreckelsham / Farnham and old MR Harris. He taught Jim Keeling at Whichford pottery how to make flowerpots (almongst many others ).. .. That split rim has some cool variations in northern Italy as well but my favorite double rim join is from Anthony Batcher the German sculpter potter in THurmont MD of the 1870's .. I would love to hear some stories on Byron Temple some time . He is my favorite of the English taught potters in America of the generation before us ... Never met the guy and was sorry for it . I was working at Jugtown in 1969 and then in south Wales at the village of Ewenny and opened my shop in 71 so I never got out much .... I love making flowerpot !! The old shops in the UK worked form 50 pound incriments as you may know called a "cast" so a #1 was 50 pounds ,a #2 was 25 pounds and so on . What poundage are you making this batch? Looks like a 10 or 12 ?but hard to tell from a film . . Most potters were asked to throw 20 casts a day in the old shops .. GEorge Currtus of Littlethorpe and Issac Button Of Halifax both were closer to a ton a day .I knew George but missed Mr Button ... I am lucky if I get 25 ton a year at 66..I had some time at Wetheriggs pottery in PEnrith nr the lakes in the early 70's .. ... If you are ever in New England stop by for a visit .. Nice looking group of flowerpots! The wet red clay is so luscious, it makes me wish they could stay that way, but the wood kiln should add some nice flashing. Although you say most of your techniques came from researching English flowerpots, I see Traditional Italian earthenware flowerpots as the most direct historical influence. Be sure to let us see the finished fired pots!

I learned a lot about flower pot making and I was amazed how much you can do with that little coggle (sp). I wish I had some red clay. I may try this with a mid fire white clay. Questions, how thick are the walls for a flower pots? Where and how do I put drain holes? Should I make a bottom tray to catch water?

You can also use a triangular piece of wood intermittently to do a lovely rope around the rim roll it like the dowel.
