This fine Marine whom I will look up at St. Peter's Gate some day reminds me of a little Corporal who I serve with in the early '60s. (I am an old 'Brown shoe' Marine from 1961 to 1966.) He had been on Iwo Jima, too. He never spoke of it. Every now and then he would let little things drop when he had too many beers. When we had 'junk on the bunk' inspections and all utensils, field gear, etc... was put on your rack with an emblems/ribbons card in the center, he did it differently. He would go to the EM club the night before and do like every other night, drink and do, come back and sleep in his rack. The rest of us was sleeping on the floor with our gear laid out (no time in the morning). In the morning, he would put in the middle of his rack the emblems and ribbons card (and no other gear) with the ribbon of the Navy Cross surrounding it and the Navy Cross emblem in the center of the display card. He also had two Bronze Stars and two Purple hearts. The inspecting officer would stand at attention at the foot of his rack and say 'Good display, Marine!' and move on to the next Marine. I saw this happen many times. When I leave this earth, these two Marines along with some others will be tops on my 'To Do' list to 'hang out with'. Semper Fi!

Mr Williams is a national treasure, and still looks like he has the fire in his belly. Doesnt look or act his age.
I knew Woody when I was a kid. He worked with my father at El Toro. He lived in Eugene Oregon until his death. RIP Woody.
