I have a very large power bank that's meant for camping with USB, DC, and three-prong outlets. Forget the mAh but it's in with my fish supplies and ready to be plugged in if the power goes out. Obviously this requires me to be home or get there relatively quickly. Around here the power outages are usually caused by heat, not cold or storms, so I don't feel comfortable waiting very long before getting the air flowing again. Tbh in the past I've sometimes had to let what happens happen. In the 750gal pond outside, I've only rarely lost fish -- summer 2020, I lost exactly 1 koi with the power out for like 3 days and the water at a steady 95 degrees Fahrenheit. It was horrible, but it could've been so much worse.

Yeah I don’t agree with his theories here, I lost pretty much a whole saltwater predator tank during a a short on that outlet, it happened in the span of 5 and a half to 6 hours. I came to the tank and all but 4 fish were dead and I had a lot of big nice saltwater fish, so they can die a lot faster if it’s stocked with alot of fish or they are bigger fish, when they are small guppy type fish they aren’t using as much oxygen, that should be specified. Salt water all hell will break loose with no flow
There are previous years' videos where he's gone over the cost to get a good one to run the store and it's a ridiculous investment that at the time they were looking at putting to other things
We lost power in a snowstorm, for about 24 hours. The USB nano air pump for my 10 gallon ran like a champ on a USB battery pack for about three days. I kept it on the battery pack just to see how long it would go. I wrapped the tank in old blankets to keep it insulated, then floated a 32 ounce water bottle full of hot water to keep it warm. It stayed in the 60s, even though our house got down into the 40s.
Thank you. This calmed me when we lost our power for 24 hrs in the uk. Luckily I have a wood burner so could keep the house warm and have now purchased a usb air pump.
Up here in Ontario Canada we’re lucky our power company has a outage map that gives pretty decent estimated time of repair so it really helps with knowing what measures I need to take
I recently transported a large Pleco to my LFS and I had one of your nano air pumps running for the cooler I put him in (it's a 90 minute drive and he's a 14.5" Pleco). The associate that helped me pointed at the pump and exclaimed "Aquarium Co-op pump!". I don't know why that tickled me, but it did. He recognized it immediately! Your nano air pumps are must haves for every fish keeper!!!
Thank you Cory. We have a planned outage by the power company next week for 6 hrs. I will probably just run my USB pumps anyway for peace of mind but now I know not to panic like I have in the past. My son just moved to Washington and he has gone through a couple of crazy storms recently. 🌱🐟🌱🐟🌱🐟🌱🐟🌱🐟🌱
I had two last year, one 3 hour one this year. One was a tree that fell by the school so it was a rush job, schools get top priority to get back online even before the pandemic, the other was a car slipped on the ice and ran into a power pole and caught on fire and lit the pole up and was burning it down. It took did not take long to control the fire but replacing the pole, etc. took a couple days. The most amazing part was the driver got out in time and did not die. When I saw the pole on fire with a car there I figured the driver was dead. I could not get close enough to tell since the police had restricted the area by the time I saw it but found out afterwards.
My last go round with fish had intentionally overstocked mbunas when a blizzard hit and we were without power for about 36 hours. The house was already only 63 or so before and it got much colder before power was restored. No battery operated fish equipment back then and it was nervewracking- had quilts around the tanks, manual agitation with spatulas, etc. In the end only lost 1 fish in 2 55 tanks. I think about this more with nano tanks as they won't hold heat long at all, look forward to that new product when it's available. Spring in the deep south means storms and outages, want to be better prepared.

Very helpful video. The power failures we had this past winter all turned out ok for my little water gardens, but now I have a 14g aquarium and I have just ordered one of your battery backup pumps I'm going to switch it to as soon as it arrives. Thanks for the info & tips!

38 degrees Fahrenheit right now and the power was out for an hour-ish. Immediately wrapped my tank in blankets and then started googling on what to do. I live on the Gulf Coast and experience hurricanes frequently. Hearing a pro like Corey give tips like these reaffirms what my current game plan always is. I've found that having aerators for minnow buckets that run on AAs are good for a longer term backup when gas starts getting hard to come by.

woah great video! I panicked for hurricane Ida and my action cost me a few fish. the fish that were not tampered with survived. Thanks for your lil green battery air pump by the way. It sure came in handy!
My wife, Cathy, (who sometimes post here) has 10 tanks ranging from 20 to 120 gallons. Her largest tanks have various varieties of discus. I'm ignorant (for the most part) of tropical fish and their needs. But as a husband, I'm tasked to make sure all my wife's tanks have back up power in the even of a power outage. Living in south central Florida, our power is occasionally knocked out during an electrical storm, but generally the power isn't off long enough to become a concern. Hurricanes are another matter. In past years (the last being in 2017 during Hurricane Irma) we had our power knocked out for several days. In 2004 I bought a 10 H.P. back up generator and had a local electric company install a sub panel comprising 10 circuits and fed by my generator. Two of the circuits are dedicated to (two different rooms) my wife's fish tanks, so as to keep the filters, heaters, aerators, lights, etc., running. However, when our power is knocked out for a protracted amount of time, I don't run the back up generator 24/7, but rather run it for about 2 hours on and 2 hours off. This cycling of run time keeps our two refrigerators (that have frozen brine shrimp and blood worms) and freezer temperature satisfied. The upshot to all of the above is, my wife has peace of mind, that in the event of a long-term power outage, her fish will be fine.
@@toriless An automatic transfer switch isn't applicable in my case, as my small generator is manual start; plus, to prevent too much start-up amp draw I must turn on each circuit one at a time. My generator can't handle my 240 VAC well pump, and two refrigerators and one freezer -- and all the fish tank items trying to come on at once.
Here in South Africa we currently have stage six load shedding, meaning our power is off for up to and even over 8 hours a day. This is fine in the summer months but in winter it becomes a real struggle with me setting alarms at 2am to get up and cover the tanks with blankets or add water I’ve heated on the gas stove. The 500l maintains its temperature well but my 50l cools rapidly.
Thanks for great info. You should check out Honda 2200 with propane conversion. I love mine. Propane is easier to deal with, exchange, and store. You can run generators in parallel to get twice the power.
This happens to me every summer, ALOT! What I do is I have battery operated air pumps and depending on the size of the tank I put two to three air pumps in there and if the power stays out more than 4 hours I’ll do a water charter change of 50 to 60 percent. I have all salt water fish and one fresh water tank which is two mbu puffers and a ghost knife and neon tetras
Here in Washington, we do have the power outages!!! This is such a helpful video. I do nothing for the first 8 hours too. I like having the battery-idea backups. The ads in WA are advocating solar panels...however we do have to have enough sun in the winter for it. Last summer our town lost power during the 100 degree weather. That was rough. Most all my indoor fish did okay, including the goldfish. We sure need backup alternatives as time goes on. Thanks for a great video. Glad your power came back on before going on longer. USA
Off grid is a bad idea in WA, get a hybrid system, on grid with just enough batteries for an outage, the batteries cost as much as all the other equipment combined, so $2000 in panels, inverters, etc. cost another $2000 in batteries, on grid cuts your cost in half, just add enough batteries for running the furnace fan and lights if you have NG. The recent ads are all for on-grid systems. Off-grid does not work in WA.
one thing you should touch on is how your filter media is effected. the filter can become anoxic and kill everything good, then when you turn everything on a massive blast of ammonia hits the system. long outages i always dump the filter water out.
Here in Sweden, I have never experienced a longer power outage than 4 hours as most. We don't have those extreme storms or hurricanes as you have in the US.
Around here 98% of the problem in unburied lines, in old neighborhoods, getting hit by trees and their branches. Everything where I live it is buried but down on 228th nothing is, power always goes out there which shuts down about 10K home north of there. The one is was not branches it was a car hitting a pole and catching on fire.
What would you advise for longer power outages, I live in south Louisiana and hurricane Ida knocked my power out for 7 days, luckily I didn't have a tank setup at the time but now I have a 125 gallon freshwater tank running. Thanks
I love these videos . What to do when things go wrong really helps with the panic when something happens. I’ve only got 3 tanks, but I’ve been gradually accumulating supplies in case of emergency
Answer was ... ... nothing, it is usually restored before it matters but he does not live a garbage heap like TX. Only morons live in that trash fire of a state.
These videos are the best. If you are cool and have a battle plan, then us mortals don't have to panic. This said, I'm also very happy i live in a country where the power is very rarely out. :) Love your smart gadgets, you design and sell. Smart, useful, easy to understand and made with logic (makes my ADD-autistic brain soft and relaxed).
When a pond gets that high of a water level the dam can fail even without an overtopping just from the weight of the water behind the dam and saturated material within the dam itself. It might be good to have an overflow set for a lower water level, or have the ditch bypass the pond when the ditch gets lots of flow like you have there. It's a small pond but a failure can result in a channeled flow that can be quite destructive.
I am moving at the end of the week. I wish your new air pump had been out a few weeks ago when I suddenly had to scramble for a mobile air pump! I bought some cheapy one from online and it will suffice for now. After I move, though, I’m going to order a couple of your air pumps for my tanks!
Hurricane Michael knocked my power out for two weeks...wasn't much I could do as priorities immediately became cutting trees out of the way, food, water, and medical. I lost about half my fish and three years later a few survivors are still in there...along with new friends. They proved to be pretty resilient.
It’s been my experience, especially with the larger fish, that a lack of oxygen is the first thing that will kill fish. Waiting a few hours isn’t a bad idea since the power will usually come back on. If not, then the lithium battery air pumps come out. I’ve gone 8 hours during a black out in L.A. with me miles away. No issues after the power finally came on.
One thing that I didn't explain during it, cause I was in the middle of a power outage is. It is also really important on how much oxygen was in the aquarium water to begin with. If your aquarium starts low, you have much less time than a tank running air stones before it goes out.
I had a power outage not that long ago but thanks to the co op nano usb pump I was able to use power banks to filter most of my tanks. Other than made water flow myself in the tanks with no filtration lol
Always call your power company first. I learned if nobody calls then they don't know to get out and fix it. Don't rely on the guy next door to do it because he could be thinking the same thing. One time I waited and called half hour after it went out. Power company said Oh you're the first to call. I kicked myself for not calling sooner.
I have a crap load of backups first I have a ups with a large marine battery wired to it that will run my air pump and sponge filters when the power goes out. When that dies I can use my old swagtron scooter that has a USB port and then a few portable cell phone chargers and then a ton of D size batteries for portable air pumps. I’m currently considering building a solar generator. Because of where I live I can’t have a generator.
In my country we hardly ever have outages long enough to actually need to do something about it, but - recently the power in my house was shut down for a few hours for maintenance, and when the power went back on, both of my LED aquarium lamps were dead (along with a laptop charger and a stove's LCD screen, kind of a random combo)! So that's something to have in mind, apparently...
I had a bunch of wine coolers destroyed but about a dozen brown outs over about 1 or 2 minutes before Snohomish PUD finally went black. The refuse to bury line on 228th so every storm power goes out to about 10000 homes, every time. They are complete a$$h0l3s.
Best way is most expensive, with a hard wired, auto start, auto change over generator. We have one at a couple of my work sites, with others having mobile, manual hook up, manual change overs. The ones with manual change certainly incentivize me waiting for an hour before hooking them up.
I have a Tesla Powerwall battery storage. Some people have battery storage with or without solar panels or residential wind turbine. You can store non peak power to be used at peak power times. The powerwall powers your whole house even charging my EV’s. Remember when city wide outages gas stations are closed as gas pumps need electricity to pump gas. 26% tax credit.
Washington power PSE charges a flat rate for electricity, there's no peak or off peak rates or option for one. Your first 600kwh is $0.09 per kWh, 600kwh and above in the billing cycle is $0.11 per kWh. You can save money with solar though, and a battery backup can be nice for power outages or if you want to be nice to the grid. Maybe there's credits that puget sound energy gives for having a battery system.
Cory I’m surprised with your success, you didn’t get an Tesla or other battery back up for the main equipment in your house, for you house/business, where possible. I like the video, well said ❤️
Thanks for that information! I’m seriously concerned what I can do during power outrages. Answer is nothing. I get a battery air pump for hour 8. You opened the the door and my first thought was: „where is the snow?“
My lfs manager has a natural gas generator. It turns on automatically when power goes out. He has 38 tanks. I use a generator that connects directly to my circuit box. Quick setup. My tanks went 18 hours with nothing running once and all fish survived. Plants help alot.
I have a dedicated UPS for my tank. IT should last for approximately 6 hours. It gives me an alert on my phone when I am traveling so that I know the event happen. Additionally; I can disable individual ports on the UPS incase I notice something going ballistic while I am out.
In our area we went through a spell of loosing power every month sometimes twice a month. I ended up investing in a generac whole house generator. I think we've lost power twice in the last three years after the purchase. 😆
That is why you should always have an umbrella, so it does not rain. I always have a cell phone with me in the car for the same reason, so I never need one.
For all the stuff you have to run in the shop you should just get a whole house generator. It will run everything. I know it costs like 10K but if you can afford it, it is a life saver and makes life easier. I know you have a ton of stuff you may be putting money into as well like developing your awesome air pump but if yuh ever get a chance, look into it. I can’t wait until your air pumps come out. I will def. be buying some as well as your new nets made with carbon fiber. 👍🏼
For anyone who can run a generator, that should be first option for the house. Keep the house warm keep the fish warm. After that it's batteries and candles. Batteries have to be looked after, they do go bad even if you are showing "5 bars" it doesn't mean it's going to last as long as when we first buy them, they lose capacity. Like most things the weakest point is the human, at least this human (me) hahaha
There are different types of generators. The type I think I would like to have are hooked up to the building and they automatically come on when power goes out. They are great because you don't even go 60 seconds without power. The other type are portable and you have to plug everything in and then you have to worry about the exhaust and noise and starting by pulling, they suck
You can buy Second hand or new Computer (UPS) Uninterruptible Power Supplies. You would have to change filters and pumps plugs to the Computer type Plug like the back of Computers Power Supplies or have a work around to this. I have never tried this so dont know how long it would keep a filter going. Worth its money if you have an Investment of fish in a tank.
after having a large earthquake no power I just did not do a thing to my fish tanks. Most of the CBD was Damage the next morning I saw that the large fish tank had a big crack in a corner so at that point I took all the fish and plants out and place them in a chilly bin. the tank was half fill. the fish were all ok
Here in Tacoma we've lost power once, do we're good with our 2K watt Honda gennie, but when we lived in the Sierra we lost power often so we had a propane backup gennie that could run everything except the HVAC. I've shipped a lot of fish even all my bluegill when we moved and I LOVE battery operated live well air and/or 12v convertor to run The Big Air Pump from one of the cars/extra car batteries. I'm curious, given your location, the property, the weather, etc, why you're relying on battery backup and not an automatic starting gennie. Yes, it's an investment, but it's always proven to be one of the best I've ever made. That said, running lo tech makes everything a lot easier.
Thanks! I have been mildly concerned about it. I have a 40g, 30g, and 10g guppy tanks setup. The two larger ones have about 40 guppies in each tank. At what point should I be concerned? Still 8hrs? We always know if the power goes out in the night, because my partner sleeps with a CPAP. So, of the power is off he isn't sleeping. We are in Oregon, Corvallis area. So, the weather tends to be mild enough to not warrant power issues. We are very low income. I plan to invest in purchasing your USB air, and the sponge filters eventually. Just gotta save up

The upshot to all of the above is, my wife has peace of mind, that in the event of a long-term power outage, her fish will be fine.
An automatic transfer switch would have been easier and cheaper.
My husband my hero to good job bet she hugs on you!
Thank you !!!!
WOW,I just made two orders yesterday, well I can wait ,I have several fishing pumps for air but I have no plan for the heaters .
Great video, thank you Cory 😊
I live in WA also about an hour from these guys we haven’t really had any rain unless this was filmed weeks ago.
I'll have to look into that air pump.
Thank you, I will show this to my friend who was freaking out after 15minute blackout the other day
Anything under a day is nothing.
@@toriless Yes but she is a bit over dramatic :D
Thanks for great info. You should check out Honda 2200 with propane conversion. I love mine. Propane is easier to deal with, exchange, and store. You can run generators in parallel to get twice the power.
How do you synchronize the AC frequency between both generators if one is out of phase from the other?
This was really interesting and very helpful with making my own power outage plan, thank you ❤️
Cory, Such a great set up…congrats to you for creating your opportunity to have that great space!
Awesome braces man ! Can’t wait to visit your store soon!
You must live in a sewage dump of a state like FL and TX.
@@toriless close but no, Bakersfield ha ha, same thing
You guys are so helpful! I order lots of plants and supplies from you guys and everything is great
Thanks for the video
@@toriless Thanks!! Good to know.
one thing you should touch on is how your filter media is effected. the filter can become anoxic and kill everything good, then when you turn everything on a massive blast of ammonia hits the system.
long outages i always dump the filter water out.
Love you guys! Your video's are so helpful. Thank you so much
Here in Sweden, I have never experienced a longer power outage than 4 hours as most.
Thanks
Beautiful stream
I love these videos . What to do when things go wrong really helps with the panic when something happens. I’ve only got 3 tanks, but I’ve been gradually accumulating supplies in case of emergency
Answer was ... ... nothing, it is usually restored before it matters but he does not live a garbage heap like TX. Only morons live in that trash fire of a state.
Love the opening shots - good information, thanks Cory and crew💕👍
Some really good ideas here!
Actually great information for power outage situations! Thank you so much!
You have a U$ 40k generator sitting in your garage. It is your car. You can buy a good inverter and with that run a lot of pumps.
I love my aquarium coop usb air pump!
Living in hurricane territory this video is very useful! Definitely have power outages for days vs 8 hours, lol.
This happened to me last night hahaha what timing
Your outside area looks so great😍😍🔥
It’s been my experience, especially with the larger fish, that a lack of oxygen is the first thing that will kill fish.
For the algorithm!
Same😂
Had the power go out today. Just used a batteri operated airpump. Luckily it was just 2,5 hours. And it wasn't that cold today.
Luckily in the UK power outages are very rare.
True. It happened to me once for about 3-4 hours but it's fairly uncommon
Had to pause the video to go buy my air pump!
Whole house generator is a game changer
Cory I’m surprised with your success, you didn’t get an Tesla or other battery back up for the main equipment in your house, for you house/business, where possible. I like the video, well said ❤️
Only at Aquarium Co-op would you see a storm so bad it rains INSIDE! LOL!
Whoa did I miss a video or two? When did you get the discus that’s awesome! I already got my aquarium coop air pump 👌🏽
The whole house generator quote was 37k with a 7 month lead time currently.
where can I get hold of them, feeders, from they are just what I am looking for? I am in the UK.
I never need candles. I have half a dozen flashlights and extra batteries.
Can you pleeeeeeese tell me/us where you got those black tubs for your fish room?
Thought of getting a wood stove, for backup heating?
after having a large earthquake no power I just did not do a thing to my fish tanks. Most of the CBD was Damage the next morning I saw that the large fish tank had a big crack in a corner so at that point I took all the fish and plants out and place them in a chilly bin. the tank was half fill. the fish were all ok
Do you guys sell the hexagon clay tunnel? I like the size
Haven't seen you post any new videos lately let's get it going 💪💪💪
SOBO has that air pump which will last a day with built in battery here in malaysia. Real lifesaver.
Just gotta save up
Yeah, ignore everything but air/filtration. Fish do not need lights, etc. They can actually go for days without food but not much longer.
Question about the CO-OP air pumps. How many air stones/sponge filters can be run off one pump with a gang valve? Using them for 55 gallon tanks.
That depends on the air pump PSI you are using. There was a good video from these guys on how they set up the air with PVC and DIY gang valves.
