To me the most appealing artstyle is the one of adventure's era (the 1st modern design), but it's maybe because I grew up with this one. The other designs are good too but I miss the old modern style.
SuperNess77 the Adventure 1 and 2 art style was just so BAD ASS! Everything about it got me pumped up, especially with the music that went along with the games.
I really like Hesse's modern sonic design! I think the extra boom spikes he gave him make him look much better! I liked the extra boom spikes they gave boom sonic so seeing them on a much better design makes me happy!
@5:55 A wild Hesse Boi appeared. Personally the designs are best for what style of gameplay is present. Classic Sonic just looks oofy in 3D and Modern looks weird in 2D.
Personally I really like the BOOM redesign. The quills have a nice look of realism but are still cartoonishly enough creativity; longer legs and arms make him look more grown up and mature; the scarf and bandages gives an adventurer look (think Indiana Jones) and look epic! But that just my opinion...
I really liked your point about the return of Classic Sonic, I really don't like the way he is portrayed and I feel Sega doesn't really remember what used to make Sonic appealing in his presentation which I think really shows how great his design is and how its probably a big part of why he has survived so long after unfortunately jumping the shark. I think its pretty silly though to expect the animated design to be what is used in the game though. I'm sure the animated cutscenes weren't something they thought of at the same time, its probably something that didn't come into the picture during the point they were creating the character models/sprites. CD's art I believe was done by Kazuya Hoshino and it doesn't reflect the designs of the FMV's either. The animation designs were also made for animation so of course they look different, look at the art of Project X Zone or Namco x Capcom and compare them to the character portraits, Imaishi's designs are different. Same with the look of the characters in Persona games vs the FMV scenes, intros, and anime. I also believe the design was done by Hisashi Eguchi. I know the "toei" thing is what people call it but I just think it makes more sense to credit the person than the studio especially since people have no issue doing that with Heese.
Hey thanks for checking out! I didn't say I expected Sonic to look like that in Sonic CD. I was just dissapointed that he didn't look how he looked in the intro. Obviously there were a ton of technical limitations at that time and like you said the fmv probably went into production long after the game was being developed. However with modern technology I think it would be a welcome time for them to try him out again! Get you on Toei Sonic but I am literally just using the most commonly referred too name!
@@ArtistMarkFlynnYeah I get it. Nobody is evil or anything for using it! But he's a great artist and I just want him to get his recognition. I don't really go around calling people out and I figure it won't change much in the end anyway!
I feel the same way.. C. Sonic in the classics was hip and radical plus he could talk (The Sonic 1 box says so) but in gens they made him like a baby.. When people now play the classics they think he is 6 even though he is 15!
A very intriguing video! I'm also one of those people that thinks Sonic's overall character design is so damn brilliant. A timeless design that's very reminiscent to old Rubber hose cartoons of the 1920's & 30's; blending the designs of Mickey Mouse and Felix the Cat nicely. As a animation enthusiast, this tickles my love for cartoons. In regards to the Sonic Boom/Sonic Toon design, it's not exactly *that* bad to be honest (yes, even Knuckles too). From what I've seen, overtime people started to warm up to this incarnation, mostly due to the Sonic Boom TV show and the unfortunatly short lived Sonic Boom comic series being so genuinly great; I do hope this incarnation sticks around along side the Classic and Modern series respectively for that reason alone. Speaking of Classic Sonic, I wouldn't mind getting a game in the style of Toe Animations and or Tyson Hesse's style at all! Tyson's little doodle of combining the Classic, Modern, and Boom design on Twitter is really cool too! A very interesting take on combining those three established design into one unifying design.
J.R. the Mustached Mirador you're right on boom Sonic. The render of the model used in this video is brilliant. The main criticisms really are just minor changes to the design that seem unnecessary but ultimately it's the terrible reception of the game that has added to the reception of the design. Knuckles is fine too but just jarringly different from his previous designs.
When I was watching this video, I was thinking "he's going to say Sonic CD Sonic is the best, I just know it. And you totally did. I agree with you 100%.

I absolutely love how Sonic looks and moves in the intro to that, and his return in Sonic Mania, and I've wanted the games to reflect it so much. Also thanks for introducing me to Sonic Freedom and Sonic Ages, I'll check them out.
Tbh I never had any issues with Sonic’s design, until Boom made him into Lanky Larry with bandages, and the Sonic movie,... *We don’t talk about the sonic movie here*
You know, I’ve heard that one way to tell a good character design is to look at its silhouette and see how distinct it is from every other character silhouette. And while I’m sure this isn’t a universal metric, if we were to use it here, Sonic’s design easily stands head and shoulders over almost every other contender, with the only more iconic silhouette I can think of being (arguably) PAC-MAN’s. That said, in the more modern settings which include more realistic locations and NPCs, I’d say Sonic’s cartoony look hasn’t held up as well; a reason for which I think they toned back the realistic humans and stuff. I also think Mario’s character design is a bit underestimated. Unlike Sonic’s design, (which was very much a product of its era as is evident by the constant redesigns,) Mario’s design remains relatively unchanged from Super Mario Bros., save for a blue pair of overalls and, (not so unlike Sonic,) limb elongation, (if less apparently so.) I think part of it may have to do with the different approaches Nintendo and SEGA take with their games. In Sonic Adventure, SEGA presents us with realistic humans living alongside cartoony animal people and tells us “This is normal.” while decades later in Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo shows Mario-a presumed human-walking alongside far more realistic humans and tells us “This is as weird as you think it is.” I think this video also makes an interesting point; ua-cam.com/video/TyTXWP53cqA/v-deo.html
I don't think I've seen a single comment talking about how Tyson basically put his version of Modern Sonic into the newest Sonic animation, TSR Overdrive. So that's another design we can officially add to the list now
I completely agree. Tbh I always loved that version of Sonic, I just didn't have a name or word for the specific design, but I always was a fan of it Whenever I saw clips of it
I actually like the adventure era Sonic the most, I can see why the art could look dated but the in game Sprite (most notably in dx) has the coolest design to me
I like modern sonic but his in game look is just weird. The 3d spikes don't look like spikes, they looks more like floppy tentacles. I think toei sonic is best because the spikes look and behave like they should, which is stiff and sharp.
Toei/Junio Sonic’s elongated and stiff quills works well for the animations but as a stand alone design feature, I felt like it ruins Sonic’s iconic silhouette as well as making Sonic’s rolling a lot less smooth and “ball like” for a lack of a better term
@@realestAG most people would say the opposite about the silhouette, with the droopy spikes they look more like tumors if you look at him from the front, they only look decent from the side, whereas with spiky spikes they look better from like every angle
@@SquidwardProfilePic Sonic’s worst angle will always be his front facing view. That’s been a minor flaw of the design since the beginning and it’s the reason why a lot of Sonic artist (Hesse, Uekawa, and Eguchi [drawer of Toei/Junio Sonic]) still draw the 3 quills facing forward despite not being anatomically correct. It’s a stylistic design choice that helps alleviate the design weakness. With that being said, I’d argue that not only do the overly spiky quills look worse than the normal slightly droopy quills from a side angle; but at a front facing angle, they manage to somehow look worse than the normal quills look at that angle. I think the Sonic Utopia fan game model is a perfect example of how awkward overly spiky quills can look at a front facing angle.
@@realestAG I mean every 3D sonic model is pretty bad if you ask me, but I think they look the worst with the flacid spikes rather than spikey ones. I think the sonic mania special stage model is as good as it gets currently, and I think the sonic 06 model is disgusting, spikes aren't supposed to be that jiggly. If you remove his enormous eyes and his ears off the head it looks like his head is a squid.
that new sonic design u mention'd last is like perfection. its kinda always how i thought of sonic to be like, but i never could do it myself u know. this kinda hm the previous ones ( older needs abit hm what is it) and then that design comes up and its like yes thats it!
Ranking the Sonic Designs, my opinion 7. Hesse Design: He gets the quills right, but it looks really weird a lot of the time. 6. Boom Design. Oh, this design is pretty good, it just doesn’t have a good game to represent it. 5. Movie Design: He’s so ugly, BUT SO CUTE 4. Classic Design: Oof this design is pretty good all things considered. 3. Modern Sonic (Lost Word- onward): for some reason, they shortened his quill a little but I LOVE it. He just looks so, ARGH 2. Toei Sonic: what do I even have to say. They nailed it 1. Modern Sonic (Adventure to Generations): I just love this design so much, it never looked bad in any game it was in. Well except maybe Generations.
I somewhat enjoy boom’s sonic design. Make him a bit shorter, less spikes, and that’s it. I don’t mind the blue arms cause it looks slick with the scarf.
My thoughts exactly with Toei sonic. I've always dreamed of a more authentic toei look in a game! True that sonic utopia is probably the closest thing we have. Combine that with similar gameplay to "Defunct" and we have a winner
I found it exhilarating in Unleashed, found it refined in Colours, liked it in generations (but it was mainly to do with the re-imagining of classics in 3d) and absolutely hated it in forces. Felt incredibly lazy. Can see why you wouldn't like the boost concept, though I do prefer it than the adventure gameplay I think.
Cheers dude! Really cool to see you dropping in too! I think it's similar with me to be fair. Used to always draw him all the time at school and he's definitely the go to notebook doodle.
I agree. This animated mixture of past Sonic designs would be amazing to see in a game... heck, even in an animated video of it's own. Hopefully the future of Sonic's design will be nice bright and colorful twist on past iterations. Great video! :P
I quite like the Adventure Sonic. He's pretty much what I really grew up with, as Sonic Adventure DX for Game Cube was the first Sonic game I ever really got into.
While I was watching this video I heard you talking about the really good Sonic CD intro version of Sonic and with the reference to Wind Waker you took the words right out of my mouth
YES YES YES! I loved how sonic looks in the CD and Mania cut scenes. I feel like Utopia really captures the cool elements of that design while laying down decent groundwork for a potential 3D sonic play style. Great video!
I've always loved the 2D art style used for the adventure era, but just thought that the proportions for modern fit the best. I'm not a fan of the Tyson design. I think it's great, but I prefer the classic, classic sonic design. The new modern one looks...interesting..
Riders Sonic is the best Sonic. Nothing beats the Sonic Riders intro. Also i think Sonic OVA/CD Sonic was the best Classic Sonic, the Tysson Hesse one is too cocky and less serious for me.
Ugh, what the heck UA-cam? It showed me not being subscribed to you, but I clearly remember subscribing and binge-watching a bunch of your vids months ago. Anyhoo, when I see a Sonic analysis vid, I click. This was certainly a good one.
The "Sonic Adventure" Sonic is my favourite one but the new art on Twitter or Facebook is really good too it has just design aspects from every generation! I think my new favourite is really the new art...
I'd say my favorite design for Sonic would be his modern design. Particularly from unleashed. I think it had the closest blend of elements that make up his character. It's more cartoony than the adventure games so it translates his lighthearted playful nature. But it also still has that edge that Sonic has always had. Translating the cocky and more serious aspects of him.
My humble opinion, Modern sonic is pretty good (watch sonic unleashed clips) i like sonic x design as well i think sonic mania design can be a great cartoon for sonic and not more than that 😊
It'd be cool to have a Sonic game done with hand-drawn sprites, sorta like "Wario Land: Shake It!" That style would fit Sonic way better than Wario anyday.
I will always love the Dreamcast Era style - including the Sonic Shuffle design. It's what I grew up with and even after adjusting to the Modern and Boom styles, it's what I prefer. To me, it's what makes the lovable Hedgehog undoubtedly Sonic. Though additionally, I also grew up with SatAM Sonic so I'm actually torn between both of them... As a Modern Sonic fan primarily, I never have and never will truly understand the appeal of Classic Sonic. I've always seen him as younger, cuter, and less spunky. Furthermore, I actually like a talkative and wisecracking Hedgie c: Edit: I am also now IN LOVE with Movie Sonic’s design!
( I'm just going to say this right off the bat I know this is a very unpopular opinion but regardless I will share my piece ) I prefer the facial structure of the modern-day Sonic but prefer the body shape and accessories of Boom Sonic. To me, it just fresh look after seeing pretty much the same design for many years. (Modern Sonic btw) plus I just like the slim and taller body shape. For a character that's all about speed having a taller more Sleek body frame just suits the character better. Plus, since male characters don't wear clothes Sonic along with the rest of the main cast having a unique put signature accessory give the male characters more of a vivid appearance. But, admittedly I could possibly be biased. Due to the fact that when I finally got back into the series after about 12 years or so, I started watching Sonic Boom and despite the controversy and not so pleasant ratings I actually found the show to descent. Anyway I prefer modern Sonic over classic. His Green Eye's are nice and I've always preferred him taller and older too. But my favorite variation out of the many different designs of modern Sonic, is easily his design from the Sonic Riders games. Is eyes just seemed a bit smaller which felt looked nice and the Deeper Shade of blue and different shoes were cool too. The green shades on top of his head or a very simple yet very fitting touch as well. But that's me just though. I really hope Nintendo and Sega come together again and we'll consider maybe making a new Sonic Riders game hopefully it will launch onto Nintendo switch as well and not be a port.
I have seen a few bits of the show and quite enjoyed it in places! I just think it's the bad game that left the sour taste in people's mouths. That and the drastic change. I do wonder if they'll go back to riders given they have the kart racing games now?
@@ArtistMarkFlynn In terms of Sonic Boom that does make a lot of sense. And yes considering the new upcoming game team Sonic racing that will release in 2019 I'm not so sure if they will return to Sonic Riders but if they do by any chance that would be great in my opinion. I've always been a huge fan of racing games & since I recently got back into the series (been enjoying Sonic Forces and playing as Sonic in Super Smash Brothers ultimate) I think a brand new racing title is just what the series needed. I'm definitely planning to pre-order!
@@ArtistMarkFlynn Oh yeah, I remember that game. (My older brother and I actually 100% completed the game) as bad as that game was I still have memories of it. And yeah that would be pretty cool if they returned the foot racing concept back into the series. I know this is probably a huge stretch and is asking for a lot but last time I checked the band that get the soundtracked in Sonic R is still around and fairly active too. It would be really neat if they brought them back to do the soundtrack for the next foot racing Sonic game but an upbeat modernized Style to fit fast-paced racing action.
Great video man. Im probably one of a few (or just the only one lol) that actually likes the sonic boom version of the all the characters. The new art at the end is amazing but i do wish he would have kept his sonic boom height.
I think the 06 design was the coolest for these characters. Despite that games reputation, you could tell they wanted to go all out with everything. Including the bold, sharper more streamlined designs. I know it’s not one of the main four designs, but I think it works best for the older “modern” sonic. Sonic CD “Toei” is the best for classic sonic. I think Tyson Hess’ sonic design is great but just a little too looney toon if that makes sense. Sonic CDs intro and ending had more of a realistic feeling towards it more than Manias cutscenes.
Hey it's not weird man. All opinions are subjective. I think it's a nice looking design it just feels a bit removed from the original attitude of sonic I remember... Thanks for checking out the video! It's appreciated.

Sonic forces did that!
I always thought that Sonic Shuffle's heavy cel shaded look would fit a mainline Sonic game really well.
Agreed. 90s Toei animation is incredible!
Would you not like to see a 3D Hesse Boi attempted?
Keep up the cracking mods btw. Really do love seeing what you come up with.
Hortinus Oh my god you’re here! I am a big fan! :D
i actually making my version of Toei but uh.......how do i sent that to you? lol
@@ses5736 The color helps with the wrong age effect.
2:10, that was a reference to Eggman's original name back when he was first submitted into SEGA as a mascot idea who wore pajamas
Good taste!

Tbh I never had any issues with Sonic’s design, until Boom made him into Lanky Larry with bandages, and the Sonic movie,...
*We don’t talk about the sonic movie here*
Episode about the movie... Coming soon!

So that's another design we can officially add to the list now
I completely agree Toei Sonic has the best design hands down. The other Sonics have long limbs and long quills...
He's awesome!!! I don't really get the fixation on the long limbs either!
I completely agree. Tbh I always loved that version of Sonic, I just didn't have a name or word for the specific design, but I always was a fan of it Whenever I saw clips of it
I actually like the adventure era Sonic the most, I can see why the art could look dated but the in game Sprite (most notably in dx) has the coolest design to me
Tyson Hesse is actually inspiring his style would be perfect for the next evolution of Sonic and Co.
It has to be done...... Please?
"Classic Sonic's inclusion Forces last year also feels out of placed and completely FORCED"
Me: I see what you did there
Toei, Adventure and the mixed Sonic at 6:27 are my favorite looks for him
Great picks!
I *LOVE* the combination design!
It's amazing isn't it! Tyson is a talented boi
I like modern sonic but his in game look is just weird. The 3d spikes don't look like spikes, they looks more like floppy tentacles. I think toei sonic is best because the spikes look and behave like they should, which is stiff and sharp.
I've noticed the same
Toei/Junio Sonic’s elongated and stiff quills works well for the animations but as a stand alone design feature, I felt like it ruins Sonic’s iconic silhouette as well as making Sonic’s rolling a lot less smooth and “ball like” for a lack of a better term

Ranking the Sonic Designs, my opinion
7. Hesse Design: He gets the quills right, but it looks really weird a lot of the time.
6. Boom Design. Oh, this design is pretty good, it just doesn’t have a good game to represent it.
5. Movie Design: He’s so ugly, BUT SO CUTE
4. Classic Design: Oof this design is pretty good all things considered.
3. Modern Sonic (Lost Word- onward): for some reason, they shortened his quill a little but I LOVE it. He just looks so, ARGH
2. Toei Sonic: what do I even have to say. They nailed it
I like it in retrospect too, I think at the time it just seemed very unnecessary and paired with a bad game it was just a bit disastrous!
@@ArtistMarkFlynn Atleast we didnt get any of the concept designs of Boom Sonic. Look up his concept art its awful.
Eggman’s boom concept art was more uglier
My thoughts exactly with Toei sonic. I've always dreamed of a more authentic toei look in a game! True that sonic utopia is probably the closest thing we have. Combine that with similar gameplay to "Defunct" and we have a winner
Agreed!!!
He died with SA2 for me, Mania hit me right in the nostalgia gland but 3d sonic is painful these days.
What'd you think of colours and generations? get a chance to play either of those?
I enjoyed generations quite a lot. i just really don't like the boost formula as a whole.

Riders Sonic is the best Sonic. Nothing beats the Sonic Riders intro.

The mixed up Sonic design looks very good the perfect sonic look he looks very serious and lighthearted at same time Sega should use this sonic
The anime version from Riders lol.
My humble opinion, Modern sonic is pretty good (watch sonic unleashed clips) i like sonic x design as well i think sonic mania design can be a great cartoon for sonic and not more than that 😊
I like the comic design and boom design as well as the boom game

this video is so cool and brings a lot of thought to me. I fully agree with you. But the mix of the designs is surely my personal favorite.
I wish you had mentioned pre-release Japanese punker sonic
I mentioned pre release sonic a bit in part 2!
Furthermore, I actually like a talkative and wisecracking Hedgie c:
Edit: I am also now IN LOVE with Movie Sonic’s design!
( I'm just going to say this right off the bat I know this is a very unpopular opinion but regardless I will share my piece )
I prefer the facial structure of the modern-day Sonic but prefer the body shape and accessories of Boom Sonic.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn
In terms of Sonic Boom that does make a lot of sense.
@@jadestep9624 I'd personally like to see an on foot sonic racing game again. Sonic R is a good concept but just executes so terribly lol.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn
Oh yeah, I remember that game.
Bruh my favorite sonic design is the one for the new movie
Dude I threw up 3 times while typing that😂
Brendan Ness LMAOOOO
Ouch.
I like Toei Sonic and Boom Sonic because of the personality they give off.
True
I think the 06 design was the coolest for these characters. Despite that games reputation, you could tell they wanted to go all out with everything. Including the bold, sharper more streamlined designs. I know it’s not one of the main four designs, but I think it works best for the older “modern” sonic. Sonic CD “Toei” is the best for classic sonic. I think Tyson Hess’ sonic design is great but just a little too looney toon if that makes sense. Sonic CDs intro and ending had more of a realistic feeling towards it more than Manias cutscenes.
i like the boom design the most, i have a thing for bandages
As weird as it sounds... I like the design of the modern version of classic Sonic.
Hey it's not weird man. All opinions are subjective. I think it's a nice looking design it just feels a bit removed from the original attitude of sonic I remember... Thanks for checking out the video! It's appreciated.
