  • Last week, a subscriber asked me to figure out The Verve song, 'Brainstorm Interlude'. This is a song that I had never heard before and, when I did finally listen to it, part of me wished that I hadn't! It is a very convoluted instrumental track overloaded with effects and designed not with a new guitar player in mind, I suspect!
Anyway, instead of doing a full tutorial, I thought that I would simply play the song and talk through my process of working out the guitar parts of a new song. Honestly, this is the first time that I listened to the song all the way through (an achievement in itself, some might say!). My thinking is that if I teach a man how to fish, he can feed an entire village. Maybe my thinking is wrong...maybe an entire village will starve.
The Verve, an iconic British rock band, are known for their expansive soundscapes and emotive compositions. One of their intriguing tracks, 'Brainstorm Interlude', from the album 'A Storm in Heaven' (1993), is a prime example of their experimental approach to music.
'Brainstorm Interlude' is an instrumental piece that showcases Nick McCabe's exceptional guitar work. The track is characterized by its ambient and psychedelic sound, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. McCabe uses a variety of effects, including reverb, delay, and modulation, to craft a swirling, immersive soundscape. His guitar parts are layered and textured, providing a rich tapestry of sound that transports the listener to a different realm.
The song features ethereal guitar lines that weave in and out of the mix, creating a sense of fluidity and movement. McCabe's use of feedback and sustain adds to the track's dreamy quality, while his subtle fingerpicking and melodic touches provide depth and complexity. The overall effect is hypnotic, drawing the listener into a meditative state.
For guitar enthusiasts, 'Brainstorm Interlude' offers a fascinating study in the use of effects and ambient guitar techniques. It's an excellent example of how to create mood and atmosphere through guitar playing.

You are most welcome and I am delighted that you found it useful! 🎸🎸😊😊 By showing people the process of figuring out a song, it will hopefully encourage them to develop their own ear by applying it to other songs that they wish to learn. A win-win situation, for sure! 😁

I stubbled into this video somehow and SO glad I did. I would NEVER have attempted to figure out a song like this. It’s not my style of music. But you (it) forced me to listen closely and find the key notes. And it WORKS! Thank you!

I will be honest, I would never have attempted to figure out a song like this either! 😅 The gentleman who requested it came across as really passionate and sincere, so I was happy to do it for him. You're quite right - if you can get a process in place that works for you, you will be able to figure out any song independently, and this has to be the ultimate aim of any teacher. Yes, you are most welcome 🙏 the pleasure was all mine (in the end!). 😆🎸🤪

I believe that it was featured on 'A Northern Soul'. It's quite a chaotic track! 😅🎸
