- Doctors recruited from some of the world’s poorest countries to work in UK hospitals say they’re being exploited and believe they’re so overworked they fear putting patients’ health at risk.
A joint investigation by BBC Newsnight and File on 4 has found evidence that doctors from Nigeria are being recruited by a British healthcare company and expected to work in private hospitals under conditions not allowed in the National Health Service.
The British Medical Association (BMA) has described the situation as “shocking” and says that the sector needs to be brought in line with working practises in the NHS.

Very shameful coverage by the BBC, Nigerian doctors are highly skilled, highly knowledgable and hard working. You should have addressed the faults in Nigerias health care sector to truly understand the mass migration of Doctors to the UK. They want to put their skills to work and earn a living, unfortunately that opportunity is not afforded to them back home. atleast its the BMA recruiting them directly not scammers.

I strongly feel BBC Newsnight could do justice to this issue without sounding condescending to Nigeria and Nigerian doctors. Is the slum in Makoko a general representative of the entire country or why is it relevant to the story? Western media is just hugh.

It is shameful for the UK to allow intermediaries to exploit foreign doctors like this. Perhaps the UK is slowly becoming a third world country. Sadly, these doctors don't have a chance in their own country. The company who hired them and collected enormous fees and probably the bulk of the wages paid by the hospital should be sued and made to pay. And the executives should be in jail.
It is not that these doctors don't have a chance in Nigeria, but rather it is that Government after Government in Nigeria invest so little into the health care in Nigeria, while the Nigerian politicians go to London for treatment spending so much on themselves. I know this because I've got so many doctors in my family.

As I write,more than 90 percent of the doctors that attended to me have gone abroad. It's a pathetic situation yet our leaders can't be bothered because they have the grace to get medical treatment abroad.

Nigerian Doctors are extremely hardworking. Unfortunately, they are underpaid and sometimes go without pay for months, which results in them going on strikes. I make bold to say the Nigerian government is the sole reason doctors in their country are migrating and will continue to migrate. The Nigerian government doesn't seem to care about Health care and the citizens. If I were a Dr, I'll pick moving to another country, getting over worked but receiving my salary when due, over being over worked in my own country and receiving little or no salary.
P.S- I don't think it really bothers the Nigerian government that doctors are migrating. Most if not all governors, senators, high ranking government officials and even the president himself, travel to the US, the UK and other European countries to get medical care when they fall ill. They get treated by same doctors who left 🤷.

I would have given this story more credence if it didn’t go more for the shock factor in portraying Nigeria through pictures of Makoko. Nigeria has many beautiful neighborhoods and I would have expected the BBC to be more objective in the telling of this story.
The point here is that these doctors can't get a job at home because Nigeria is mismanaged and poor, very much like Makoko slum. Are you disputing that? 🤔

Look at the narrative the international media shows about Nigeria and Africa at large. Makoko is a tiny community in Lagos and the projection would seem as if every one lived in these conditions. Most of the people migrating to the UK spend between 10k-£20k pounds to relocate. So do you think someone that pays that much would be living in such conditions. Most of these people leaving Nigeria live in proper housing even better than the shoe boxes they move to in the UK. BBC please show a balanced narrative and please not everyone wants to escape.

Some foreign institutions that seats somewhere in a London or Newyork office to establish the number of poor in a country they no nothing about. We dont even know how many people are in Nigeria talk less of the poverty rate. Yes I'm not saying it all glamorous but we are here on the ground and it's bad but not as bad as they make it to be. Most of the poverty is concentrated in the north but way better in the south.

Most poor people in the UK don't own land unlike the average Nigerian Poor (42%) who does own land in rural areas even when living in urban informal settlements in big cities. The Nigerian poor can live on less money than an average citizen in the UK because they are more self sufficient. This is not excusing the government's responsibility to provide services to the people, but simply saying dispite the challenges, the poor in Nigeria own much more than the poor in the UK.
Secondly, many African countries are still in their urbanization phase. Many of the people living in informal settlements are people who have recently moved to the city with little skills, not people who have been living there for centuries. They work their way up, build their rural home (where they come from), as well as their new urban home. This takes time. They then move out of the slam and someone else replaces them. It's unfair to compare the people who are in transition in developing nations with the wealthiest in developed nations. Which is what the BBC is doing here... Showing Makoko when it comes to Nigeria alongside the best the UK has to offer which only the top 10% of their nation can afford. This is a wrong depiction and they do this in every Sub-Saharan country. It's the 21st century, we Africans demand better. I know many people from my country who moved to the UK and are now back because they thought that the quality of life would be better there due to misinformation spread by organisation's like the BBC. Many sold everything for a dream which would never come true.

How can the BBC make such generalised statement about 9,500 Nigerian doctors in the UK without hearing from majority of them? This is terrible on the BBC's part to do what has always been done to make black people look bad. One person does or says something & you use that to make a generalised claim about a large population. It's poor research at best.
I mean, they literally chose footage of the worst areas in Lagos (possibly the worst in the country) as footage to represent the entire country. That reporter was at a building with doctors in it & couldn't be bothered filming the outdoors of that area but made the journey to the worst place in Nigeria to film & then lied that they don't have access to doctors there. That's such a big lie that I know of personally. What utter tosh.

Why these foreign media outlets keep showing only the ugliest parts of Africa is beyond me. I know Africa is developing and lagging behind in the world, but its not all bad. Why did they have to go to Makoko, when there are many other places better than that.
It is always the strategy to show to the public: "look, in other countries is much worse, be thankful with the substandard services and life you get here". Clever way to provoke empathy and in the same time to ensure that people won't complain about what they get here, even if is not up to standards for the country's real possibilities.

I don't think being a red list is an issue! The point to this story is the exploitation of the NES company. GMC have done nothing wrong but given Nigerian doctors the opportunity to have a better life and use their skills in a system that works. The problem is the NES company exploiting them and putting them in unfavourable and extreme working conditions and underpaying them to their own gain. So let's get the facts straight- PLAB exams are NOT the problem!

as a soon to be doctor i can say with all honesty that most doctors in Nigeria are tired of the nigerian medical system. You suffer to get your degree and finally start working only to suffer long hours and very terrible pay. its not worth it. even the consultants are leaving because they are tired of it. If the Nigerian government really cares about the brain drain they should increase the pay and working conditions. Plain and simple. the fault is not with GMC or Britain. Doctors are leaving of their own volition.
If you're paid at all. Take it from a doctor who has worked in Nigeria, you could work up to 6 months without pay. It is no wonder there is such a high number of healthcare staff leaving the country.

I know a lot of people in the UK working for the NHS. Either family friends as well as retired doctors too. Most just either go abroad, once they are done here. I know one went to Dubai.. but now he came back. Cos it did not work out. But if you are able to be the MANAGEMENT level... to change the course of destiny of your own country, why would you now accept this is your eventual path??? I don't get it. A lot of doctors in the UK also quit to work in the pharma sector to add values also to their researches too. Which is what happened. But by no means does it mean that, we do not have enough doctors. We do. These companies, are basically playing politics.. and want to force the sector to go down the insurance routes! We KNEW this... And this is why people protests on the streets of London and whatnots !!!!! Please know that, this is all just a game. Everybody KNOWS what is happening.. especially those of us who stayed and worked for like 20-30 odd years... we know.

In the U.S., the AMA just LOVES to recruit foreign- trained doctors, we have a lot of doctors here who got their MD's in India and Pakistan. When these doctors arrive in the U.S., they are on a probationary period before they can obtain their AMA board certification, the AMA certification is what gives these foreign- trained doctors the autonomy to set up a private practice, or to even have a choice as to which medical facility they will work for. This probationary period effectively turns the recently arrived doctors into virtual slaves of whichever medical agency that they are employed by. Say for example the probie's boss tells them to overdose a difficult patient to death, the probie is forced to comply, in fear of getting a bad writeup, which could delay or cancel their board certification application. The AMA is a borderline criminal organization. A lot of the reason for this is due to the immense size of the U.S.'s Medicaid and Medicare fund, which I believe is in the trillions of dollars. That much money is a magnet for corruption and fraud.

I am sorry to say but the fault lies with Nigeria government. They need to protect and appreciate the doctors they have trained by giving them good working conditions. If this is the case, no one will want to go abroad.

That's how the mass media work. If they produced statistics about all 9500 doctors, most viewers would say "boring ..." and switch to a video about cats or otters. That's why they give us a "case study" so that we get a few minutes of "human interest."
I'm a foreigner who came to work in UK way back in 2000, and actually Leeds. My pay in Leeds was 10x more than my home country. I knew I had to work hard and I did. No one forced or extorted me. I was free to leave. I worked very very hard but that was NOTHING like what I would have done in my home country. Even harder for a lot less pay. Apparently some opportunists call it exploitation, a lot of foreigners like myself call it heaven sent and I am now a GP in the other side of the Pennines who appreciates my work and the villagers who I treat, and as so too are my friends who came with me from Asia. I love my community and will never forget what UK has given me. It's all relative and this is one side of the story.

the problem is not the longer than usual hours, the real problem is that the more tired and sleepy the doctor gets, the less he can concentrate and the more mistakes he makes, making the life of both the patient and the doctor itself under danger

I'm scared because if everybody has the same feeling I have about becoming a medical doctor, there will be no doctors at all. I have always wanted to study medicine but I realized those people are being given inhumane treatment without much compensation.
I wouldn't let my children study medicine though their father and I are Medics. It is sincerely not worth it. My daughter studied Economics and Politics and at 21, earns a very good wage in Finance which will triple after her Masters
I withdrew from Medicine in year 3, never have I regretted that teenage courageous decision.

Tone used in this report sounds condescending towards doctors from Nigeria by repeatedly mentioning this is a red list country. The PLAB exam organised by GMC in my opinion is a good way for doctors from abroad coming to the UK, get trained, and provide valuable services to British public if they choose to work here or people of their own country if they go back. PLAB test is a way to certify doctors who are trained abroad, that they are good enough to receive further training in the UK. This is equivalent to the USMLE of the USA. The way this report presented PLAB (as well as GMC) as if this is something bad. Think for a second, if there is no such exams to identify which doctors trained outside of UK are good enough and maintains certain standard to come over here and receive further training, the recruitment of doctors from outside UK could be even more chaotic.

You don't need to look to Nigeria.. look at what they are doing to their own doctors. Im a newly qualified doctor. I'm 32 and have worked 20 jobs throughout my life (along side schooling). I am at currently working at 100 - 150% capacity everyday... which is so much more than I've ever worked.. for 4.50 above minimum wage. The work I'm doing is way out of proportion to my wages, and I often have to stay late to finish the work. All of us are being exploited in an abusive system in the NHS. I'm unhappy, my colleagues are unhappy and the patients are unhappy.
How can you be a 32 year old who has worked for 20 jobs. Don't be a fake poster here... Don't tell me that, these kind of NES companies are doing an uber business model. Cos if they are, we need to get rid. When we had that hacking incidence with the media sector... That was enough ! We need to close the loopholes that the media has brought to this country !!!This is absolutely NOT acceptable by any means.

@@SiliconBong i agree. my dad was in this situation and got letters to move to either canada or australia. if you have a family, i can say australia is quite good because your spouse will not have to work with the salary from a full time doctor, and its the government who is recruiting, so there is no exploitation. if you want to work part time, you still earn big money, and you can send your kids to free public school, but you can also decide to splurge out a lot here and the only downside is a working partner.

They forced and harrassed the Australian people to take a vaccine even they weren't sure of. That scared a lot of people. Even the US had no such guts to force people in such a manner.

The healthcare staff coming in to the UK and other countries to work are doing so of their own volition, as they can no longer stand the situation. Several recruitment agencies have stopped actively recruiting from said countries. @@contemplatinggod2791 there's also another deep rooted problem and this comes from colonialism, the Europeans drew the borders of today's African nations in a very artificial way as a way to keep divisions within African tribes, most African countries today have more than two or three tribes within a country and this has led to constant infighting and division within these countries, and when you have a country divided, it's very easy for leaders to exploit the populations after all if a leader is from tribe A, he won't care much about stealing funds that would have built a hospital in the region inhabited by tribe B or tribe C and so on, after all, deep inside their not his people. This results in the citizens themselves becoming corrupt and never united which in turn leads to every man for himself and the brightest emigrating to greener pastures. Look at Arabic countries, they all speak the same language mostly, are mostly of the same ethnic mix of course there's exceptions, so leaders there feel like they're improving conditions of a family

Well, personally I blame the Nigerian government. Most and virtually none of these Doctors were forced or coerced into coming to the UK. As a Nigerian, the work environment, the health care system where you have to improvise to perform basic procedures, the very poor funding and loads of other problems is the main reason why most professionals are leaving.
It might be right however to say they are being exploited because of the situation in their home countries (which is usually the case with most international recruitments anyways).
But putting the blame entirely on the recruiters and or the UK government isn't right in my opinion because most of these professionals are personally looking for ways out of the country.
Most will cry foul if the UK government actually stops recruiting from 3rd world countries.

Oh how I remember the days when we trained our own doctors and nurses. The British government cut budgets of schools and departments and unless you have wealthy parents you're unlikely to be able to afford to go to university. It is cheaper and easier for the UK government to just recruit from abroad. Shameful.
It's funny because it's so hard to get into med school in England and Ireland yet they hire Drs from countries where they aren't trained to the same standard and it's not as difficult to be a Dr in their own country

@@katieb2098 Notwithstanding what Dr. Merwa did or didn't do. You cannot stereotype and make baseless assumptions like this. The said Dr graduated from Romania and not Nigeria. There are lots of Nigerian doctors doing us proud and making waves in the USA and Europe. They should be the yardstick to measure our competence.
Dr. Merwa's case is an exception and not a norm. I dare say Nigerian doctors are very well trained in clinical practice. They most often than not have to rely on their clinical skills and acumen in patient management. They don't have the luxury of panels of tests and sophisticated equipment to make use of. Little wonder why they excel when they go abroad.
P. S. Food for thought. If Nigerian doctors are that bad would the British govt and gmc be actively poaching our professionals, despite the WHO listing of red zone. Yet still they turn around and claim we have very poor health indices (especially maternal and childhealth). How can our health indices improve when they keep depriving the Nigerian masses of their medical professionals trained with tax-payers money. The Nigerian govt isn't free of blame either.
There are good doctors and bad doctors everywhere, just as there are good people and bad people also.
Medical school in Nigeria is one of the near impossible courses to get admitted into. Graduating isn't also a child's play. Our doctors put in years of sweat and blood before they graduate and are sworn in as medical doctors.

The whole world is having a medical staff shortage. We have been poaching from each other for decades and not planing to train more of our own. This is particularly true of the UK. But the elephant in the room is not all qualifications are actually comparable with the necessary skills and knowledge. But nobody talks about that!
thats the point of the tests. also remember that nigeria gained its independence less than a lifetime ago. many of the medical institutions up until recently were using the exact same curriculum as they did when nigeria was part of the british empire, ie, they were following a british curriculum. the reason it changed is because the british curriculum changed and the nigerian one didnt. theyve updated and modernised the curriculum, but the actual medical system is still dysfunctional. they now create world class doctors who do not stay to treat patients in the country that trained them.

@@MO-cu8yl The rigour you go through as a Medical or paramedic student in Nigeria is better imagined. I doubt most students could survive the schedule of a proper Nigerian Medical school. We may lack some of the modern equipment, but throw us in the mix and we are ready to go the extra mile to be the best and do the best. I am a medical Radiographer and Sonographer. My training was rigorous. Very! I spent 5 years learning the same thing others spend lesser years for in other countries.

It's really a shame our the African leaders let down the Youth of Africa that they all are studying hard tp just want to degree PHD to leave their own country to go help in the Uk whilst their own are dying how can change come from Africa if the youth are all running away thinking its greener on the other side .

It's a real shame. Recently this time in 2020, the youth of Nigeria protested police brutality and profiling based on hair colour, possession of a laptop, or driving a good car. On 10/10/2020 they converged at a toll gate which they had for a couple of days the protests had held, the military showed up, and somehow over 100 people (youth) were killed. The protests were disrupted and people haven't healed from that event till date, I am certain this lone event (there are thousands more) is why the youth leave the country. I am sure your country has a similar story to tell. Truly, Africa must wake up and oust these incompetent leaders.

Honestly, this is not JUST an issue of the UK exploiting foreigners - though that does happen and as a foreigner (though with UK settled status now) I am well aware that this does happen - but an issue of a) the country from which these doctors hail is not treating their doctors well either, so really we should be increasing standards for doctors everywhere not just the UK and b) the UK clearly not treating their own doctors well enough if not enough people want to work/work at the working standards for public healthcare in he UK which seems to clearly be the reason why hospitals are needing to recruit people from overseas. So the problem is far more deeper reaching than just an exploitation of people of any one ethnicity... people in power are almost always corrupt and we need to do something about that issue first. Anyway, it's a shitty situation and I do feel for these people who are being exploited. Having whole days in their lives being taken away like that is just not right.
The UK actually caps the amount of home grown doctors we can train, so hospitals are forced to recruit foreign doctors. This could be deliberate as to decrease spending on training. This is a problem across industries and has resulted in low wages and lots of migration. it's a method used to make the rich richer and poor, poorer.

Newsnight can you maybe perhaps look at the recruitment of overseas nurses particularly from African countries and places like the Philippines. Another recruitment drive has been announced and why. When those people you recruit can’t be free till they pay back the money from their initial recruitment. I knew plenty of nurses in this situation. It’s a bit crazy It’s indentured servitude. The public clapped every Thursday for these people and they’re slaves in all but name.
There are nurses in the NHS who should be sacked! They are incompetent amd lazy. I know them. I am sick of their being praised by people who know nothing about nursing.

I worked for the NHS and what I saw was absolutely disgusting. The way foreign nurses and doctors was treated was nasty and vile. They also worked all the graveyard shifts and was treated even worse by the night staff. The NHS is built on the backs of foreign workers and they don’t get paid as much as British doctors and nurses.
The report did nor hold any accountable for mistreating Nigerian doctors. They were only focused on how "poor Nigeria" and red lists. But address the issue qt hand, doctors alreadyin the UK are possibly still being exploited. What is the solution?
