- The Ruffed Grouse Society compiled a collection of ruffed grouse drumming footage taken by RGS Editor & Director of Communications Matt Soberg in Central Minnesota to show the spring mating ritual of drumming their beat to attract females from April to May. The first time I heard one of these I was about 12 years old and it was almost dusk and sounded like it was about 100 feet away in the woods. My heart almost stopped!!
I just heard this yesterday for the first time. I thought it was deer stomping. Pretty cool how consistent this drumming is
So much louder than the video makes it seem. Can hear them from far away
Oh ya and it sounds like it's almost in your head
Yes. It's a very bassy, low frequency that carries some distance.
One of my favourite sounds of the spring
I saw one last night hered this wierd sound. Sounded like a wierd heartbeat then we found out it's a bird. Video defenently don't give the sound it makes justice. When you here it in the forest you feel it too it's really wierd.
Just seeing a ruffed grouse these days is good luck,no doubt.
at one point I though they were someone far away starting up some sort of tractor constantly
This is awesome. My husband heard something in the bush and described it to me. I said that sounds like your talking about ruff grouse. Yes, it was. Thank you for this, it helped identify what he heard.
Wow! great footage, I really enjoyed watching. Ruffed Grouse are getting kind of rare to see here in Ohio. Are they still pretty common in Minnesota?
There’s still a lot of em in northern/ north eastern Minnesota.
Grouse vs development. - guess which one always wins...
That flapping of their wings is interesting. Is it common during certain seasons or do they do it all year long?
Great video!!
