Thanks for this video. This year there will be all seven species of Magicicada present, including the relatively recently-described Magicicada neotredecim, which I collected in 2011 in the Springfield, IL area and plan to do so again this season. By putting the cicadas into a refrigerator, it is possible to keep them alive much longer than normal, and I had one survive to the beginning of August--and posed it alongside a vial in which I had captured a tiny newly-hatched nymph, such that two generations could be "face to face". At 2:31 and 5:05 we can see a periodical cicada that has been attacked by a fungus (Massospora cicadina) that causes the tip of the abdomen to fall off, making the cicada sterile. I've heard a dog-day cicada (Neotibicen winnemanna) calling as late as midnight in Greensboro, NC--but the presence of bright streetlights and security lighting probably caused it to call much later than normal. I haven't heard other species, such as Megacicada auletes or Neocicada linnei, call that late.
@@cameronmarietta4963 Thanks! As far as I know, adults of both Magicicada and the larger "Tibicen" species (now in Neotibicen and Megatibicen within the ranges of the Magicicada species) don't occur at the same time, so it would be interesting to see if I can get some Magicicada to live long enough to be put together with these larger cicadas.
Can’t wait!!! I’m traveling to see Brood XIX probably in Tennessee. That’s the state they’re the most dense in I think. I’ve never seen a 13 year brood! I‘ve traveled to see 17 year broods all over the last 8 years. I’ve been waiting for this specific Brood for many years. 13 year cicada species are a little bit different.
I moved to Nashville a few years ago & now I’m regretting it with all of these insects😅. I do work outside & I love the summer, obviously they do as well, but I can’t stand those things flying into me. Walk into a store & find out you have one on your sleeve😨🤢. Seeing ppl happy to see them takes away some of my “displeasure” but why couldn’t they be butter flies. I live an apartment so walking through that corridor is like a horror scene. I’m on a higher level so it’s not as bad as the first floor apartments😮💨
Actually very cool, was down at Lake of the Ozarks last time we had a big hatch (not nearly this large) all night long you could hear the fish jumping up for an easy meal....
you know... considering how little interaction we have with them in general and the fact that they just wake, mate, die etc....would it REALLY be such a loss to just not have them? i understand the importance of certain unpleasant things like mosquito... but cicadas? theres sooooo little interaction and all that i can't imagine them being gone being a problem for the world.
And when nothing happens in 2024 can we all agree it's you and stop posting apocalypse nonsense on the web? Or will you just move the goal posts for all time?

That experiment is absolutely amazing. When you said you had two generations together side by side. That’s incredible man wow!!

Fall fishing will have some fat fish. Our smaller lakes, rivers, and ponds really need this.
Plz post videos of you catch after fishes feast on them…best of luck!

@@_moniica crazy person. 😂
@@_moniica I have a passion and interest in cicadas. A wonder of creation that humanity was not a part of.
@@cameronmarietta4963 so anything new over the years of travel ?
This girl is awsome love it when people find their obsession

I hate this bugs I know they are harmless but I have big time fobia I am already stressed about this summer
Same they are all over the place where I live and I used to love going outside but in cicada season definitely not
They are supposed to go away late June
This was very interesting. A very good story. I don’t like cicadas but it’s not the horror story we hear so much about.
I saw a single cicada yesterday in middle Tennessee

The noise brings such a nostalgic feeling
I love their beautiful song.
what do they eat if there are no trees?
When they swarm to mate a great thing happens. No hungry bellies in the forest. It’s a miracle.
Cicadas are great to eat
My cat, little predator, caught several cicadas this past year, smh .
But Man they are annoying in the summer .
يسمي الصرصور، يخرج عندنا في الصيف ،ويصدر الضحيج على الأشجار، ويسمى ايضا الزش
Can we eat them?
As long as you cook them and don't have a shellfish allergy, yes.
Can i add soy sauce 🤨
🤮
They came not that long ago we don't want them. NOT AGAIN!!!
