Update: Donald Nash ended up killing again - a fellow prisoner named Roy Tucker in Oct. 1994. He fashioned a mace with a stick of wood with a bunch of side-by-side razor blades attached to one end, and used a metal pipe against Roy Tucker in addition to that. He sliced the Roys’ throat with the make-shift mace as the death blow.
Also, the real names of the FBI witnesses in this story aren’t Melissa Benson and Debbie Wong. They are Margaret Barbera, and Jenny Soo Chin. I can’t find anything about her body being found yet, so I guess it’s yet to happen. Wikipedia says it’s never been found either. What a shame.
Donald Nash died in 2006, at 70 years old, after serving 24 years in prison.

"We couldn't arrest him unless we knew it was the van for sure"
Me: Uh.... what about that other guy you detained just for having a similar vehicle who you only released when you contacted his alibi?
They had more than enough information for probable cause. Two book keepers killed from the same diamond firm in which the FBI was already investigating for fraud. When the diamond firm made the claim that their diamonds were stolen. Good! They're literally giving them an in to do an investigation. Nash using his name to register a brief stay at the same place where the crime took place.
They had motive right out of the gate and they did nothing with it. They didn't ask the proper questions.
I get that the information we get is more spoon fed for us to be made more dramatic, but the way this was written just made them look incompetent. Realistically they did solve the case quite quickly, that was not conveyed in this story at all.
FBI should not be patting themselves on the back though, Bensen's death and the deaths of those 3 men would not have happened had they put her under proper protection.

I recall this case very well it was a shocking, sensation. The names of the two women were Margaret Barbera and Jenny Soo Chin. I do not understand the need for this program to change the real names of the victims since it is a true crime story but for whatever reason the producers saw fit to do so. It was reported The US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan denied the application of Barbera for witness protection however they have denied any such request was ever submitted. At the time Barbera’s brother testified in Nash’s trial, he did state because his sister was fearful she was spending long visits with her brother in Pa on and off for several months before she went back to her apartment for good. Barbera pondered for several weeks if she should take a plea bargain for her role in the scheme and testify. Perhaps that is why protection was not available I do not know. She was murdered two weeks later after she testified before a closed federal hearing in Manhattan. I think it was shortly after she returned to NYC to spend more time at her apartment Chin went missing and by that time she was quite afraid and of course we know she was murdered short time later. Terrible crime.

    • @cathecavanaugh615

According to my calculations Nash had killed 9 people & that was just while police were looking for him or recently locked him up .the 3 mafia people eating in the restaurant. The 3 C.B.S. workers trying to help out the woman they saw him throw in the back of the van . & most likely Debbie Wong . and the prisoner he killed those were just the tip of the iceberg ,I am sure . being a long time killer, God only knows how many people died at his hands . thats proof that the death penalty is a deterrent . you can't kill any more people if you gave been killed your self .

Avoidable? How? The only way it could have been avoided was if she hadn't participated in fraud, or her boss hadn't hired a contract killer. I hope you're not suggesting that the police could have stopped it. She kept important information away from the FBI about her friend when the friend went m missing. She told them her friend knew nothing about the fraud, so they couldn't see a connection. She didn't reveal to them that she had left the incriminating documents with her friend, and her friend returned them. Had the FBI known that, their reaction would have been different. Criminals think differently than non-criminals.

54:00 The VIN is in a few locations on every vehicle, especially older vehicles like this 1980's van. The FBI agents just didn't know where to look. In addition to the dash it is also stamped on the front of the engine block and the frame usually on the driver side near the driver door. The agent could have probably found the VIN by laying under the van to look at the engine block or frame. In this case the inside of the frame on the driver side would have been the easier location to read.

A few years ago a mental health technician got fired from the local state mental hospital. A guy recognized he was having a psychotic break and was about to have a seizure and told the tach he needed his emergency medication. The tech said she was on her break and he needed to come back in ten minutes.
Tl;dr version: he had a massive seizure and his brain was deprived of oxygen and he ended up brain dead. After a couple weeks of not being able to find a next of kin, they pulled the plug.
If you want to know what a state run mental hospital is like, it’s a bit like the DMV, only a lot more depressing. It’s just one reason billionaires like Bezos and Gates and Musk need to pay more taxes.

Just shows how incompetent some of the FBI agents and offices can be. Melissa was their material witness; had they been more professional in their jobs, Nash could have been caught for the murder of Ms. Wong and four murders could have easily been prevented. It's much easier to find out if a vehicle has been recently painted; surprising that a helicopter could figure it out from high above but these FBI agents, who were close to the van all night long when Nash was in his motel room, could not.

The new Forensic Files isn’t as good as Peter and unfortunately he passed away a couple years ago. I love how this story was edited and narrated. Perfect casting of the narrator. It really brings me to the edge of my seat, and leaves me with goosebumps. Truly well told.

Either way these have been one way to forget about covid political fighting and all the rest. Thanks for sharing!

I can’t imagine why this “professional “ killer would keep the murder van. The guy had 8k in his pocket when they arrested him. Plenty of money to buy a new murder van. This and keeping a cheap 22 caliber hand gun and I must conclude the guy is dumb.

Yeah, and if they were searching for any probable cause to pull dude over, look no further than his **nonworking brake light.** Lol or was that maybe not a first offense way back in the 80s? I have a hard time believing they reenacted such details 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 explicitly.

@@karanfield4229 I agree. Thank god the guy was such and idiot that he got caught. But they talked him up like some kind of criminal mastermind. Like he was hard to catch, yet he kept all the evidence of his crimes on his person for crying out loud. Might as well have just turned himself in

Well it’s not about how dumb he is but how smart he thinks he is. He didn’t think there was any chance he’d ever get caught. So why waste money on a new van or a new gun when those dumb old cops are never gonna catch me anyway?
