    Although I prefer aiming with a mouse over an analog stick, I hate using a keyboard for movement or any other actions. The ideal setup for me would be holding a wii nunchuck type of controller in my left hand while using a mouse with my right hand.

    Like it or not, convenience and ease of use is going to trump any advantage other input methods provide. Arcade sticks, racing wheels, etc. Are niche for a reason. If the console comes with a controller that can play everything, most people won't look beyond that.

    I love using mouse and keyboard on the Xbox series x when a game supports it but every time you ask on the internet if a game has mouse and keyboard support you get a bunch of nose breathers coming out and bashing you for even asking. They automatically assume you have a capable pc or suggest that you get a pc instead. I like an Xbox over pc for its ease of use and price but I also love using mouse and keyboard on certain games and somehow they can’t fathom that.

    They should make mouse and keyboard standard and allow people to choose how they want to play.
    If PC people like me can get a £500 box to play most games I would jump at it, instead of buying a GPU for £500 I would have a full usable system.
    Then in lobbies they can separate people if they want to be separated.

      I play on both console and PC but mkb is better for any game especially when you have a mouse with side buttons. It's good have both options. Also gives more options for games if console adopted MKB you can play CRPGs, Total War games, and games that don't support controller. They just don't want to add MKB to console because it will make people eventually transition to PC.

    I often see people using a XIM to allow the use of M&K in unsupported PS4/5 games.
    It's quite frequent in OverWatch in particular and it really presents a huge disadvantage for players on controller since it's a thumb's worth of movement vs an entire arm.
    I myself have difficulty with the finer movements required to play shooters and find gyro aiming a really nice addition whenever it is present, and tend to use it as a 'suplemental' form of aiming.
    Outside of first person shooters I also play quite a bit of Final Fantasy XIV, which supports Mouse and Keyboard but have been using the excellently designed gamepad control scheme which lets me use dozens of abilities in customizable slots; cycle through a party/enemy list or where they are in relation to the screen. The presence of a touchpad in Sony's consoles is absolutely game changing for that title specifically.
    For transparency's sake, I also use a very small Bluetooth keyboard that grabs on to the bottom of the gamepad via the aux port, though I admittedly only use it for in-game chat, so I don't have to use the virtual keyboard.

  • @tudedude5793

    The main benefit of a keyboard is the raw density of control options available with the left hand. On your standard controller you can make 3 inputs (pressing down the stick and the two shoulder buttons) with your left hand without needing to move your thumb off the stick, and on ones with back buttons you get 5. Compared to a keyboard where you can easily press 14 buttons with your left hand while still having fingers on the movement keys and up to 20 or even more with some dexterity practice. The sacrifice in haptics and analog movement is more than worth it in many games where having access to those abilities matter. You mention doom eternal where high level play either requires use of the weapon wheel or only having an extremely small rotation of weapons on the controller because swapping through them all is impractical, but on a keyboard you can literally just bind every weapon to a key and have instant access to it without slowing down the action and still have more buttons to spare. It’s just the superior way to play the game and would make stuff like Nightmare mode much more accessible for players willing to use it. Same thing goes for Overwatch and many other high input games that require a ton of button mappings. I don’t think players should be locked out of a control option that completely transforms the way the game is played due to their platform of choice

    • @anon_y_mousse
      @anon_y_mousse 24 дні тому

      Interesting perspective, but I find it easier to come back to the stick when my hand doesn't have to move at all with zero training to prevent thinking about it when using a gamepad. What's more, is some games let you bind your top four weapons to the d-pad which is generally all that most people will need or want.

    • @tudedude5793
      @tudedude5793 24 дні тому +1

      @@anon_y_mousse you’re right and this approach is going to work for 90% of players. Controller is always going to be the most accessible condensed control style since its the one that ships in the box and is designed to be able to play basically anything, while the WASD style was created as a workaround by players in the late 90s and just became widely adopted. And most people aren’t going to need anything more than a few binds or a weapon wheel when playing through a game like Doom or hopping on for a few games of Overwatch or Fortnite before bed, so the controller works perfectly. But I think the option should still be there for players who want to push themselves in these games and would appreciate the extra options of a keyboard.
      I’ve seen some footage of people who have beaten Doom Eternal’s harder modes with a controller and it’s certainly impressive and quite possible, but looking at the comments under these videos you’ll see many controller players who didn’t even give the challenge the light of day, while I feel at least anecdotally that keyboard and mouse players are much more willing to preserve through those harder modes. Again, most people will play through the standard or easy difficulty and not think twice and that’s fine, but I think the option might encourage some players on the edge

    • @arekb5951
      @arekb5951 24 дні тому +4

      analog movement sometimes is not even an advantage, in FPS games you can precisely control your movement with the mouse (the movement of top notch CS players is pixel precise, it allows them to climb/jump to some extreme spots on the map etc) and the repeatability of your movement is 100%, so that when you press left you go left, not mostly left and a few degrees backwards, just left, always, and this helps with aiming prediction too. Analog movement only gives you an advantage when the character you're playing is not moving in relation to your mouse inputs, in every other scenario you can just leverage superior precision of the mouse to work around imprecise (but 100% repeatable) keyboard movement inputs.
      +1 from me, I also believe that your preferred way to play the game should not be bound to any platform, especially in offline games, in which there's absolutely no reason to lock kb+m out on consoles.

    • @anon_y_mousse
      @anon_y_mousse 24 дні тому

      @@tudedude5793 I'm not saying the option shouldn't be there, and I would say the same goes in the opposite direction as it's often the gamepad controls that suffer, especially in PC games, just that a gamepad is generally an easier control scheme to pick up given that your hands don't move around when you're gripping the controller while your hands won't be tied to one spot with a keyboard at a desk. Also, I don't even know of any players that genuinely use every weapon in an FPS equally. Most use one or two, and maybe have a third and fourth for those instances where it's needed for the sake of progression.

    I would like mouse and keyboard so I could play RTS games on console (I may never get an actual gaming PC), and games like Baldur’s gate are just better with a mouse. Other than that, despite its advantages, I have zero desire to learn how to use a keyboard and mouse. I don’t play anything competitively, so there isn’t much motivation.

    The more interesting question to me is why are we still using a keyboard on PC for gaming? The mouse is great, but I really wish we had some better alternatives, and software support for alternatives for awkward keyboards. I want something like a Nintendo Nunchuck with an analogue joystick in my left hand, but with like at least 10 buttons. Keyboards can be so awkward to use, and aren't that ergonomic for gaming. There is razer and old Belkin gamepads available, like the n52te I have, but these only use 8 way D-pads.

    • @SunwishMaximal
      @SunwishMaximal 24 дні тому

      Because you need those buttons? And stick wouldn't improve your ergonomics. Would add more confusion most likely. Obviously would reduce precision.
      Even ""console"" games nowadays lack those buttons. Many games introduce weird and unprecise button combinations. Ratchet and clank has 3 stupid wheels for weapon choosing. And in this game you frequently swap weapons, meaning a lot of your gameplay is just sitting in this wheel menu. Amazing.

    Two sticks to control movement with triggers for alt and primary or 'nades is a perfectly adequate alternative control method. Mouse is easy mode, so actually takes less brain power and concentration, if you want to get into being a dick about it. Aim assist is perfectly viable and valid to even the playing field in that regard. Mouse feels great in FPS, yes. Nobody disputes that, but keyboard is clunky and technically inferior to a controller in both ergonomic design and mechanically. When you factor in other features like rumble, haptics, analogue buttons, etc, keyboard is archaic and mouse is just good for aiming efficiently, but is just as archaic and useless in just about everything else but niche genres. But have fun with your pretty rainbow lights you undoubtebly have on your mechanical typewriter whilst you battle carpal tunnel in COD.

Also, nobody really cares about haptics outside of your yellow paint console movie-games. Most people, by a massive margin, play almost exclusively multiplayer games. @@pliat I would beg to differ. Souls games are miles better with a controller, as are fighting games, and sports games such as Fifa, all with a massive multiplayer community, and in the case of fighting games and Fifa, a pro one at that.
      Twin stick shooters, games with fixed camera design, etc. Only viable on controller. Fixed camera games don't work with keyb unless tank controls, for example.
      The world is a big place, and there are more than 1 or 2 people playing the games that you are placing in some sort of niche category. Your immediate bubble may be playing COD or Valorant, Overwatch, LOL, Fortnight, whatever, and although they have a massive playerbase, it doesn't make them the only or most important playerbase as far as the gaming landscape goes, even on PC, where the controller is gaining traction as the preferred peripheral in the aforementioned game genres and games.
      The keyboard requires plenty of skill, but because it is a peripheral that was never designed with gaming in mind, so it isn't as intuitive nor ergonomic for gaming. All it has going for it is the mouse combo and more buttons. But the actual design and lack of analogue technology (not sticks) make it the inferior peripheral in every way. Make the best out of a bad situation, kind of thing.
      You say nobody cares about haptics outside of "console movie games" (which are also selling like hotcakes on PC, go figure) but for FPS games they add a whole extra dimension to feel and functionality. Depending on how much you press the trigger, you get different fire types and feedback. You may not care about it, but as a technology you cannot simply ignore and discard it's potential, either.

A controller is vastly superior to MKB even for shooters I find. I dont wanna end up looking like the Hunchback of Notter Dame and having finger joint problems which is what MKB does to you lol. With a controller you not only have way more control and comfort but also can sit further back relaxed keeping a healthy posture and as an added bonus sitting further back from your monitor is not only better for your eye health but also makes the image appear much sharper.
    Also panning the camera with a mouse is super jittery and not smooth at all unlike using an analog stick which pans the camera way smoother. There's more input lag with a mouse.

    Mouse and Keyboard are such a boring way to play video games. Thats why i play pc games mostly on the steam deck now.

    Why? WASD will never feel as good as a left analogue stick. Mouse is easy mode, but sucks for third person camera and about everything else, except for RTS's. And why the hell would I want a clunky controller on the sofa? I never have a problem in cross-play, so the difference can't be as big as they want to make out. Aim-assist is practically a mouse at this point with a good player, so evens the easy mode playing field.

      So ypu want the challenge to come from fighting the analogue stick? That's why you need auto aim. Controllers are terrible at aiming. I'd rather play a game myself. Not have a controller do all the aiming for me.

      @@arsenii_yavorskyi I play both, and I wouldn't call it cheating, but it is definitely more precise to the point of being easy mode. But if you are good enough with a right stick, there isn't much difference, if any.

      @@mikejenkins4924 What you call "easy mode" is just the skill ceiling being raised. The mouse is better.
