Can't imagine how this dish can be done in the past without the help of machinery, must be very tired for the housewife to prepare it, salute to them!
Seems exhausting even with machines, can’t imagine back then...

Well, men did the "hitting the tteok with a stick' process. Housewives didn't do it by themselves.
I guess it would be made in bulk and preserved some way, maybe dried like kirimochi, in order to avoid spending half a day for a one time meal

존맛 까지는 아니지만 충분이 매력있음 떡은 진짜 두말할것도 없이 쫀득하고 소스도 잘베어있고 소스는 밑에 달다는데ㄴㄴ 단거 별로 안좋아하고 매운것도 안좋아하는데 좀 매울만큼이고 다른분들은 적당히 매울거같음 직원분들도 다 친절하고 젛아여

**대댓글이 많이달려 다시금 이 댓글의 의미를 전달하려합니다.
물론 다른 영상들처럼 유튜브상의 대부분의 영상과 채널들은 수익을 목적으로 제작이 됩니다. 허나, 수익을 앞세워 한국 고유의 것을 파괴하는 행동을 저는 지적하고 싶었고, 이를 알리고 싶었습니다. 어느 나라든 고유의 것을 파괴하면서까지 자국의 문화를 알리고 싶어하진 않잖습니까?
우리가 미국의 팬케이크를 한국어로 받아들일 때 그를 대변할 말이 우리말에 없으니 외래어로 받아들였던 것처럼, 그들도 똑같이 그렇게 받아들이게 될테니, 우리말 표기에 좀더 신경을 쓴다면 점차 한국어도 외래어로서 쓰이는 경우가 많아지게 될것이라는 뜻입니다.
정말 사소한 일이에요. 뭐 이런걸로 따지고 싸우고 누가 옳니 그르니 한다는것 자체가 유치하게 보일 수 있죠. 그런데 제가 보는 큰 그림은 이런 사소한 곳에서 시작합니다. 이게 “한국”이라는 나라이고 이건 “한국어”야 를 보여주는 것 자체가 외국인들에게 “한국” 즉 “아시아” 의 이미지를 심어주게 된다고 생각해요. 이것이 왜 중요하고 이런 댓글을 달았냐, 서양인의 아니 영어권 사람들의 우월의식을 낮추기 위함이에요. 우리나라 사람들 외국인만 보면 호의로서 영어로 대답하고 말 걸잖아요. 한국어 할 줄 알면 그제서야 한국어로 대화하구요. 그런데 순서가 바뀌었다고 생각해요. 한국어로 먼저 대화를 시도해보고 그다음 차선책이 영어가 되어야 한다고 생각합니다. 무조건적인 영어권 사용자들의 편의를 위한 단어선택, 행동 등 배려라고 불리는 모든 행위들은 결국 우리나라와 동양권 문화를 낮추는 일이라고 생각해요.
이런 제 발언과 생각을 일반 시청자 분들은 무시하고 그냥 지나치셔도 상관 없습니다. 그런데, 이런 영향력이 강한, 한국의 “길거리 문화”로 수익을 창출하는 사람들에게는 저런 말을 하고 저런 의도를 전해주고 싶었습니다.

didnt know who exactly started calling it rice cakes, but its easier to understand for foreigners, maybe? i personally heard the term from subtitles for korean shows or dramas.
열매 yep maybe for foreigners, but recently we put importance on our orginal things so if it were called tteok at the first time and explained as a rice cake, it would be better i think :)

I'll just tell everyone that hasnt had tteokbokki I highly recommend it to you. Its absolutely delicious.
@@Ari_C the safest bet would probably be to try to make it at home. The easiest way would be to order a packet of rice cakes, and look up how to make the sauce. If you have acess to a proper korean version of tteokbokki you can be sure it's really spicy.
I tried it and it tasted horrible (to me). I was so excited too :/

just go to LA, LA has the largest community of Koreans outside of Korea. The food there is just as good. It just wont have the same range of dishes.
If you’re in the US, flight to Korea or NYC might be cheaper to hit up their Koreatown
Hopefully there are Korean restaurants or Asian markets in your area to buy the rice cakes and gochujang but this is easy to make. If you want a small batch that tastes fresh and delicious just look for Maangchi's video on how to make it. :)

Thank you very much for posting this amazing video! I would love to try this tteokbokki one day! I watch a lot of Kdrama where they eat tteokbokki ..and now I know, what that is;) I do not think I can eat this in the UK so going to save money and fly over to South Korea to try it😉
you probably can get them in America, not sure where since I don't live in America but there should be some Asian places or you could try making them yourself considering most of the ingredients can be bought in Asian markets

In london there's a lot of Korean food actually, and korean restaurants, even good ones
You can look up Maangchi's asian markets list where most of them should have what you need to make tteokbokki, it's very simple!
In Birmingham UK theres also a few Korean restaurants and theres a China town x

i had the rice cake for the first time at a buffet. it was sooo good! i didn't want to fill up only on rice cakes, but i kept on wanting more. still craving it.

@@stevenbotwin The red substance is gochujang, fermented chili paste. The green leaves are daepa, green onions. The clear sticky stuff is corn syrup. The darkish liquid, I'm not sure. Might be soy sauce or some kind of soup base.

The whole time he was cutting the tteokbokki I thought he was gonna cut himself, because the way he was cutting it made it seem so easy, but, if I was trying to cut like he was cutting that would be a total disaster.

떡 17년하고 떡장사 6년한 떡쟁이입니다
떡 2말 찌던거 한꺼번에 빼시던데 저렇게하면 수분 날아가서 몽우리 생길수있습니다 귀찮더라도 1말씩 빼시는게 더 좋구요 가래떡 2번빼는것은 좋으나 2번째 빼고나서 물속에 담근채로 자르시던데 그렇게하면 물속에 있는동안 소금간이 빠져서 떡의 표면은 싱거워집니다 그리고 물속에서 떡이 불어 두꺼워져서 쫄깃한 식감도 떨어지죠 때문에 건진 상태에서 자르시는게 좋아요 일부로 그런식감을 추구하셔서 그런지는 모르겠지만...그리고 소금과 반죽물은 계량화 하시는게 좋을듯하네요^^

My favorite is the fish cake served with it, I mean the combo is heaven on earth. Sweet, spicy, chewy and all that sauce! I wish I still had a friend to make it for me. Lol

They are rather tasteless, which gives them flavor is the sauce. If you go to an Asian market you can find different types of them mostly in the frozen aisle. You can also depending on the store find frozen tteokbokki kits some mild to extremely spicy. Just depends on your taste, you will have to get the green onions separately.
Its extremely chewy but in a gentle and pleasant way. It feels like the rice cakes gently sticks to your teeth and makes a clicking noise as it falls off. Its mostly about the texture when it comes to rice cakes, and the sauce is the flavor. The texture is very pleasing to chew on.
When they freshly make it, it sorta feels like melted mozzarella cheese.
You can order it from Amazon or Ebay. I just had some about two months ago and I really enjoyed it.

I wander why they didn't just cut them into pieces the moment they out of the machine? the cake cant stick to each other after running though water anyway.

the rice dough went through then they put the dough in again to make it smoother i guess. the more the rice cake is like hit? it is softer but i’m not sure.
The water bath helps clean the rice cakes I think. they don't want it to be starchy so they just use water as much as possible, 7:07 they dump out the water and refill it before cutting it at 7:18. and/or it's made with hot water at the beginning, the cakes are steaming at 5:33 and they rinse them off with cold water at 6:15 probably too hot to cut comfortably
@@katieir42 they moved the tub out of the way and the over flow water spilling out, then fill it back. The cake after out of the machine always run through cold water to prevent sticking. My question is after the second time out of the machine, why not cut them right away, and drop then in the water bath, what the point of keeping the hold long cake if you ll cut them into smaller ones IN THE SAME bath of water anyway.
@@alria2133 Because at that point it's still too soft to be cut and besides, it's easier to cut evenly in ur own pace rather than to keep up with the machine.
@@marm818 maybe to keep it in your pace was right, but i sure the cake is easy to cut while it still warm, rice cake become more chewy and harder to cut when it cold.
