It's best to install braids in the direction your hair grows if not you'll be pulling your hair out resulting in thinning especially if you're over 30.

About the maintenance bit, I feel like if you know what to do you can keep them in for 6 weeks without getting a retwist.

That’s correct but your hair needs to breathe

@@PutoJM yeah, you should, but like from the research done,let hair rest for a week or 2 after a protective style. But protective styles are the most efficient if kept for longer than 3 weeks.
