Honestly, whenever I get tired of murder hobos, just create a level 1 paladin npc of a god powerful enough to keep resurrecting them until the murder hobo flees or tries to negotiate.
I tend to include high level npcs among quest givers for setting and story reasons. Makes it really funny when someone tries to murder them in their sleep.

The "too deep to understand" like reminds me of a character I read about in a fanfic who had a ridiculously angsty backstory and had a super inconsistent personality. When someone called the author out on how they were an annoying anti hero mary sue they said that their personality was so complicated even they didn't understand it. Honestly, I would pay to watch a DnD podcast where both the DM and every single player is some form of bad player and nobody wants to do what the others want to do, but they cant just stop playing together for whatever reason.
That seems like it could be funny story. Once, long ago, a group of people sat down together to play a friendly game. But greed, selfishness, outright malice, and simple incompatible preferences led to disputes, which led to rivalry, which led to enmity. Unwilling to entrust any single member of their group with special authority, they eventually decided that the role of Dungeon Master must be a rotating position, thereby greatly magnifying drama and retribution in all of their various forms. Refusing to grant a hated nemesis the satisfaction of driving them away, aggravating their loathed compatriots is now the only part of the game that these maladjusted malcontents still enjoy. And none of them is willing to settle for any less than getting everyone else to finally quit in frustration. In the end, there can be only one.
If you're into Warhammer 40000, there is a UA-cam series called "If the Emperor Had a Text to Speech Device". There is one special where the cast is playing Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, and it is exactly this. Every bad player and DM trope is in there, with one or two good players. It is wonderful.
I remember I was once in a game where one PC would randomly turn into a demon whenever it was convenient and they needed attention and at one point they almost attacked the rest of us. They rage quit when people disagreed with an idea they had.
I'd imagine that's a combination of a couple factors: 1. you're less likely to hear about the time a game went fairly well, since it isn't massively worth sharing 2. they're an uncommon race, and usually require supplements or homebrew to actually be playable, which makes stories with them less common 3. as a race largely inspired by Japanese mythology and a central creature in Naruto lore they attract a lot of weebs 4. as a race with animal traits who usually come with bonuses to charisma, and thus attractiveness, they attract a lot of furries 5. since they normally gain bonuses to charisma and illusion or mind control abilities, they're well built for numerous edgy or annoying classes (paladins, warlocks, bards, rogues, etc) I should clarify, I don't believe that liking anime or being part of the furry community inherently makes you a bad person or something. It's more that there are people who base major parts of their identity on liking anime or being a furry, and those types of people are very rarely fun to be around, and this race attracts both of them. Thank you for coming to my TED (Tabletop's Extreme Douchebags) Talk.

Dyed in the wool sandbox gamer here. Yeah, I've had "just do nothing" people. Usually it's not their fault though, it's rather common for people to rely on their GM to outright TELL people what they are doing. Sometimes it's good to have a specific plot hook to get them in the region and have it resolved or become irrelevant after a lot of other interesting things come about. Then they are wondering at one point "weren't we supposed to be tracking a white dragon?". Have a little "intro plot" to the big open sandbox.
I WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN I WILL NEVER RUN AROUND AND DESERT YOU NEVER GONNA MAKE YOU CRY, NEVER GONNA SAY GOODBYE NEVER GONNA TELL A LIE, AND HURT YOU
My old DM was the very definition of "Old School" with a bit of sandbox mixed in, but the best possible version of those. Amazing table, and the dungeon crawl / puzzles was a ton of fun. And those who live recklessly, do not live for long
It's really hard to label a DM as a cheater when they are the one running the game. A DM should have the ability to create house rules. (Then again, know the rules before you break them. ) and I'm not opposed to a DM fudging dice rolls or stat blocks if an encounter proved to be too easy or too difficult. (But don't play favorites.)
@@an8strengthkobold360 No, I meant there's the GM, the Player, and Wizards of the Coast. Wizards needs more help then players do when it comes to writing.

You know the funny thing is that my brain instantly started figuring out how that could work. Basically it amounts to every kingdom in the world is trying to figure out what the space dragon wants so they can have it's overwhelming power on their side, like a loose WMD. None of them assume anything the dragon says should be taken at face value, ascribing deeply subtle messaging to it all. Naturally the dragon is likely being upfront, but it's so alien it keeps doing odd things that feed the conspiracy theories about it's true motives. Picture Sauron, Gandalf and Mumm-Ra all trying to puzzle out what the dragon actually wants, while it's just up there eating popcorn as they entertain it.

Now I just need to find a DM to run it because if I tried to run it, none of my normal group would survive.
Everyone knows Mary Sue is an evil goddess bent on making the world bow down to her. If she can't have her way she'll destroy the world and remake it in her image.

My first DM sometimes looked like a pinata, but that was only a thin facade over his killer nature...which was itself just a thin disguise over his true nature as an oldschool DM.
I'm in my first D&D campaign right now. The campaign is... I'm pretty sure it's Lost Mines of Phandelver, since I heard the campaign name before, adapted to 2e because that's what the DM knows. I'm playing a Thief with the investigator kit, who I've been playing like a detective. (I guess the rest of the comment could have some minor spoilers for that campaign, so heads up.) Now, our Dwarf Fighter, in an unprecedented move that annoyed the Ranger and made everyone else chuckle, invented tater tots early in the campaign- cooking them shortly after our first run-in with the Redbrands IIRC. Tater tots might be starting to catch on in Phandalin, but are unknown elsewhere. Tater tots quickly became a minor meme within the campaign. The Ranger even asked a banshee her opinion on tater tots in a semi-joking manner as we were leaving her forest. (Her response was "What... are... TATER TOTS?!" Thankfully she wasn't too angry about that.) So there's a point where we run into some Doppelgangers. Two run off in different directions and we have to split up to chase after them, and my Thief chases down one Doppelganger with the Fighter. My Thief reaches him first, keeping up the trail so he doesn't get away even though he'd probably get wrecked in a one-on-one fight, and the Doppelganger shifts into me so that the Fighter can't tell who's who. Thinking on his feet, my Thief backed up, turned toward the Fighter, and shouted, "Oi, thanks for the tater tots!" The Doppelganger, naturally knowing nothing about tater tots, looked mildly confused. Fighter took the Doppelganger down in one blow. I love this game.

Oh no! That friendly half orc tavern keeper the murderhobo just stabbed was a level 20 paladin who retired to set up an inn! Good luck with his massive pool of health and the plus two longsword he keeps under his bar in case of "trouble". So I'm playing a half-celestial, half-dragon, half-demon, half-vampire, half elf named Totality. (oddly enough, when 3rd edition first came out, there was no rule to prevent this. It was just assumed you wouldn't apply more than one Template to a character.)

The world around them changed partially due to it, and by the time they actually wanted to do anything with it they were shocked to learn that they weren't the only group of adventurers and someone else did it.
I have fond memories of that game, and I consider it the time the party were more akin to Merchants and their guards plus one priest rather than proper adventurers. They even had a proper fancy wagon.

The "too deep to understand" like reminds me of a character I read about in a fanfic who had a ridiculously angsty backstory and had a super inconsistent personality. When someone called the author out on how they were an annoying anti hero mary sue they said that their personality was so complicated even they didn't understand it. Pretty sure as the author you should know your character's personality?
it depends. I think tolkien once said that he doesn't know what happens in certain place of his fictional universe he was asked about.
Now I want to see this
I remember I was once in a game where one PC would randomly turn into a demon whenever it was convenient and they needed attention and at one point they almost attacked the rest of us. They rage quit when people disagreed with an idea they had.
I've never heard of a Kitsune being in a game and them not being the center of a RPG Horror Story
I had 2 Kitusnes in my games over the years, both times it went fine (it is one of the official races in Pathfinder though)
One of my players is a Kitsune.
I'd imagine that's a combination of a couple factors:
1. you're less likely to hear about the time a game went fairly well, since it isn't massively worth sharing
2. they're an uncommon race, and usually require supplements or homebrew to actually be playable, which makes stories with them less common
3. as a race largely inspired by Japanese mythology and a central creature in Naruto lore they attract a lot of weebs
4. as a race with animal traits who usually come with bonuses to charisma, and thus attractiveness, they attract a lot of furries
5. since they normally gain bonuses to charisma and illusion or mind control abilities, they're well built for numerous edgy or annoying classes (paladins, warlocks, bards, rogues, etc)
I should clarify, I don't believe that liking anime or being part of the furry community inherently makes you a bad person or something. It's more that there are people who base major parts of their identity on liking anime or being a furry, and those types of people are very rarely fun to be around, and this race attracts both of them.
Thank you for coming to my TED (Tabletop's Extreme Douchebags) Talk.
One of my fellow players is a kitsune. She can’t read, is dumb as a brick, and has somehow not caused more damage than a warhead.
She’s my favorite character of the party.
If it’s part of the setting the DM allows, it can go well/it’s actually a developed character instead of “look at me go”
otherwise, CHECKS OUT, THOSE ARE RPG HORROR STORY RECIPES IF IT IS ANYTHING BUT THSOE 2 THINGS
The one thing I've learned from these videos on DnD so far is that Eldritch horrors have nothing on the forbidden evil race of Those Guys.

Usually it's not their fault though, it's rather common for people to rely on their GM to outright TELL people what they are doing. Welcome aboard, comrade
Yes, you did 👍
Welcome to the club.
(I guess the rest of the comment could have some minor spoilers for that campaign, so heads up.)
Now, our Dwarf Fighter, in an unprecedented move that annoyed the Ranger and made everyone else chuckle, invented tater tots early in the campaign- cooking them shortly after our first run-in with the Redbrands IIRC. Tater tots might be starting to catch on in Phandalin, but are unknown elsewhere. Tater tots quickly became a minor meme within the campaign. The Ranger even asked a banshee her opinion on tater tots in a semi-joking manner as we were leaving her forest. (Her response was "What... are... TATER TOTS?!" Thankfully she wasn't too angry about that.)
So there's a point where we run into some Doppelgangers.
