If you went to the dictionary and under the word Jerry Garcia this would be one of the songs that can explain and define the greatness and talent that he was
in the new rollingstone they cite this as one of the best dylan covers ever. about time rollingstone showed jer, john an merle some love. that magazine bites.
WHAT a great version! The spaces in this song, the clarity, the resonance, of every instrument, are amazing, especially for a live recording. That electric mandolin from 5:08-5:54--goosebumps! And Jerry's singing was never better: wistful, letting go, pushing away, but edged with hurt, pity, loss, disgust, resolve. America's guitar-Buddha--he's jamming w/ buddy Merl up where the best songs never end....
What makes Jerry one of a kind is that he had a way of telling the story without having to say a word. His tone, phrasing, and fill are second to none, just absolute dynamite
Well put my friend. I feel the exact same about Jerry, he is the king. Put simply, he sings straight from the heart. The reason he does it so well is because it is pure truth, no audience pleasing hooks or phony lyrics, just pure emotion and living and playing in the moment.
Agreed with all of the comments. He was the best at interpreting Dylan. He understood how to feel/play the story. Ps absolutely love the pictures & photos of the video.
What made Jerry is that you feel his glorious bright good hearted soul though his music. Only him Todd snider of railroad and Billy string have same feeling. Jerry is my religion be kind
Goodness gracious do I dare say this is the best version of the song I've ever heard ,... I suppose if you listen to every bit of their music for 15 years you would say all of its the best 😀
It always strikes me how much generosity Jerry voices. Don't wanna hero-worship, but a rare kindness seems to run though everything he plays and sings. Even in a song with such bitter lyrics, Jerry makes them more rueful, more pitying, than cruel.
I just recently came across a sign in someone's window, it was a light up sign, a small version of those signs businesses use with the yellow light bulb arrow and the sign is a big white square you can put letters in...anyway, it says "POSITIVELY 4TH STREET" on it. It's in someone's apartment window. Every time I walk past it I smile and wonder how many people get it.
Dylan most likely wrote this song about Phil Ochs, though some contend he wrote it about the press. 4th Street is in Greenwich Village and was ground zero for the folk music scene. Ochs relentlessly criticized Dylan when he broke from the folk purist movement in the early 60's. Dylan wrote this song in 1965 and until Ochs' suicide in 1976 it was generally understood by fans to have been directed at Ochs. Jerry was a big Dylan fan and always did great covers of Dylan songs.
The Jerry solo starting around 4:30 and going on for a minute and a half is the reason I said "he simply plays the notes I want to hear". What an absolutely stunning solo during such a sweet rendition of a wonderful song.

this version of this song is one of the best songs I have EVER heard! It makes an impact every single time I hear it. 22 years and it still sounds as great as the first time, when it stopped my whole being just to listen, and UNDERSTAND!

This show was the first date with a woman who became my wife. I am sure the fire on stage kindled the flame in her heart. RIP Jerry, Merle, Keystone, 2nd wife.
Thank you so much for posting this - Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia and John Kahn - rest in peace..... In my opinion, this is best version of this song... Dylan's lyrics with great vocal and awesome performance by all. It is a real pleasure to hear them all again.

i didn't know about Merl's demise--he and jerry had a special relationship. when jerry came out of the coma in 1986, he turned to Merl to help him play again. garcia's mind was jumbled, and it took a lot of time and effort for him to become even close to the guitarist he was prior to the coma. my favorite song from the keystone when jerry just needed time out from all the other demands he faced.
This has to be the most caustic and biting love song ever written. Dylan was sarcastic and defiant but Jerry's still suffering and inconsolable in his pain.

You said it brother. He touched so many lives. Its crazy how far he reached out. I know that he personally has given me more joy than I thought was possible. And I am just one of millions whose lives were blessed by his music.
Jerry knew how to put his own interpretation on lyrics and music. As written, this is an angry song that Jerry & band turned into a song about disappointment with an ex-lover / friend.

Funny that the lawyer across the road from me represented Jerry's estate. Now, he is representing a crooked, former chief of police, in Wolfeboro , NH. The former pd chief is accused of sexual assault and harassment, and his replacement is accused of the same.

Ok people. The day is Monday January, 13th 2019. There have been many, I was an Althea lover for many years. Even went through a period when all I would listen to was shows from the late 80s. (Coincidentally, all the same shows my ex caught as a young woman). But in this sad, post Jerry world where we are hanging our hopes on a handful of new acts (thank you sturgill) and the neverending Dead and Company tour...this one is it for me. I have never grown tired of anything from 73 with Jerry & MS. If that ain't fucking musical magic, idk what is. This is it. My lifetime, have this playing when I draw my last breath- song. Thank you Jerry.
7/4/75 imo is the greatest Jerry Merl show hands down. I've had the concert on cd since the early 90's but hadn't seen it here until recently. ua-cam.com/video/6P8U5a4mHLE/v-deo.htmlsi=Jv6h6HcDXlg99UfZ
I'm looking at all the suggested videos on the side....Jerry played played all the greatest of songs, and it stoned me, night old dixie, after midnight, to lay me down...wow
I bought the double album in the 80's just for this amazing version. Thanks for bringing the song back into my life. And people, stop arguing about the guitar/mandolin issue and just use your ears. One can clearly hear another stringed instrument entering the song at 5:08 as Jerry is finishing his solo. Don't care if it's an electric guitar or my grandfather's mandolin. Fact is, there is someone playing on top of Garcia's guitar (which is still audible throughout the song on one channel)...
The guitar work is incredible on this. The notes just fall into all the right places. He states the melody beautifully in the first solo and then builds it to an emotional crescendo in the second. It’s perfect.
It's supposed to be a vitriolic, disdainful soliloquy, not a sweet, soft ballad. This rendition is a misunderstanding and I don't get all your laudatory comments.
When I saw Dylan back in 86, I felt so disappointed he didn't play this song. Many people went there to see Dylan, but on the way out many wished it could have been more TP and a lot less Dylan. I think this version is better.
If you went to the dictionary and under the word Jerry Garcia this would be one of the songs that can explain and define the greatness and talent that he was
Damn Jerry!! I forget this one gives me chills every time!
in the new rollingstone they cite this as one of the best dylan covers ever. about time rollingstone showed jer, john an merle some love. that magazine bites.
Jerry always did the best covers of Dylan's songs and this one is the best one of all; the best of the best.
Agreed, my favorite break up tune ever, given the weight it needed from Merl and Jerry
✌💀🌹⚡
And Bob Dylan agreed with what you wrote above too. There is an Oswego N.Y. 1980 show which has a great version of this as well.
No One Played “Dylan” better than Jerry Garcia, No One that I’ve heard ..
This doesn't cut it!
Sorry. The graphics totally are not appropriate. Just bogus. Music stands for itself, as it always has. I abhor what was done here.
Why does he have to play every single dylan so damn
slow?
Markus Rose because when he sings he gets into your soul
Markus Rose Why you in a hurry for it to end??? It's a ballad...
Markus Rose He preferred to do some that why, why not? Dylan never complained. But I guess you never heard Jerry do Tangled Up In Blue?
Markus Rose Cuz, life is toooooo fast, my friend....Enjoy....

Do we know who’s playing the electric mando?
Truly. This is a masterpiece of both performance and recording.
Explain what you mean by the spaces.

I love that you commented on this 12 years ago, and 7 months ago. Jerry sounded like a friendly grandpa when he was 27.
Jerry went beyond ego, he was tapped into something beyond that.
I just recently came across a sign in someone's window, it was a light up sign, a small version of those signs businesses use with the yellow light bulb arrow and the sign is a big white square you can put letters in...anyway, it says "POSITIVELY 4TH STREET" on it. With the one who tries to hide what he don't know to begin with?
You see me on the street, you always act surprised
You say "how are you?", "good luck", but ya don't mean it
When you know as well as me, you'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once and scream it
No, I do not feel that good when I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief perhaps I'd rob them
And tho I know you're dissatisfied with your position and your place
Don't you understand, its not my problem?

@IanDavidOnDU I think Garcia made it more mournful than angry, which is to say; he did it his way.
Makes my fur stand on end
my favorite comment of the day, thanks :-)
If you play...this is a lesson in patience.
I took this on today and I went at it for like 12 hours. My fingers were ready to bleed. I have been in a rut for years with progress and was giving up. Losing interest. This song is helping me progress again somehow!
..the space...between the notes..
this version of this song is so much fun. Take a sad time and make it ok. Bless you Jerry.
I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it in 1975. Amazing!
I've been listening to it since then, too.

OH, Jerry, tu nous manques, ta sensibilité, ton talent, le son merveilleux de ta guitare,ta chaleureuse personalité.

Always said Jerry did Dylan better than Dylan. My all time favorite is this and forever young
Sorry to tell all you Dylan fans, but this rendition tops any other cover and Bobs original. The absolute best version.
I'm a big Dylan fan and I couldn't agree with you more. An awesome song, Dylan sure can write them, but Jerry takes it to another level.

Dylan's original was angry and snarling. Jerry sings it soft and sweet. My favorite cover of any Dead or Jerry work.
Jerry knew how to put his own interpretation on lyrics and music. As written, this is an angry song that Jerry & band turned into a song about disappointment with an ex-lover / friend.
Wistful.....
Saw Merle San Luis Obispo,1993. What a sweet gentleman. Had the keystone CDs. I'm from San Rafael Marin county San Francisco California and I love Jerry Garcia 🍄🌁🌁🌁🍄
He is my favorite artist. He was much more than a musician. The voice and music that led me from deep depression as a child and still therapy today
to think in 1973 this song was only 7 years old and 100 years old at the same time..beautiful, could have been the original easily..
Amazing how Garcia's leads are the melody lines of Dylan's singing.
Basic starting point for all solos....
IS the melody ...
yeah, I think its overdubbed, because it sounds like jerry, but while he's soloing, theres still the sound of his guitar in the back
One of the most honest songs.
A feast for the ears and the eyes

You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning
You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a hand to lend
You just wanna be
On the side that's winning
You say I let you down
You know it's not like that
If you're so hurt
Why then don't you show it?
You say you lost your faith
But that's not where it's at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it
I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You're in with
Do you take me for such a fool
Think I'd make contact?
With the one who tries to hide
What he don't know to begin with
I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes

The sweetest tone ever. Who knew a guitar could talk?
Don't care if it's an electric guitar or my
grandfather's mandolin. Fact is, there is someone playing on top of Garcia's guitar (which is still audible throughout the song on one channel)...
The Dopeness
Awesome version of this song. Jerry definitely could do Dylan songs.
this song I'cant get enough of, Jerry Dilan best cover
Jerry does Dylan = bliss
Mmm, that's the stuff...
Solid showing against crystal palace today
The guitar work is incredible on this. The notes just fall into all the right places. He states the melody beautifully in the first solo and then builds it to an emotional crescendo in the second. It’s perfect.
Jerry's guitar just takes you away here.
This showcases that laid-back unassuming beautiful Soul that was the late great Jerry Garcia and thank you Merl Saunders.
Heartwarming
This one hurts extra coming from Jerry.
If I remember the record's liner notes correctly, I believe that special guest David Grisman joined in for this song...
Yes on mandolin
I was wondering where that second set of strings was coming from, so hard to focus when everyone is so on fire! Thanks for the answer.
It's supposed to be a vitriolic, disdainful soliloquy, not a sweet, soft ballad. This rendition is a misunderstanding and I don't get all your laudatory comments.
You are a good writer 🍄🌛⚡🌜🌹🌍🌁🌁🌁🌁🍄
One of my all time favorite Dylan Songs done as only the late great Gerry Garcia could do it and Merl Saunders was awesome as well.
simply perfect
When I saw Dylan back in 86, I felt so disappointed he didn't play this song. Many people went there to see Dylan, but on the way out many wished it could have been more TP and a lot less Dylan. I think this version is better.
Bottom line in NYC
Beers and music. AHHH
Whatever shall bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven! 😘🦁
Agreed, at least before he roasted his vocal chords chasing the dragon and pounding the Camel non filters.
Truly a beautiful song, and a gorgeous VDO! Thanks so much for posting.
I have this LP from way back when, it is still sounding so sweet!!!
Where did you find that impressionist style painting of Jerry that shows at :50? Its an amazing painting
