I Always Thought This Scene In "Days Of Thunder" Was Very Eerie Because It Seemed Like Tom Cruise, And Robert Duvall Were Almost Predicting Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s Fatal Crash On The Last Lap Of The 2001 Daytona 500 Which Was 10 And A Half Years After The Film Was Released.

i have to ask you something harry, you know before buddy hit the wall just how actually was Buddy doing in that race?
For some reason I struggle to understand exactly what he means by this… and why Harry gets so pissed at him afterwards
Guessing Buddy was winning and Cole is saying it didn’t matter that he was spooked/f’d in the head cuz he was still winning, and Harry gets pissed for some reason, maybe Cole was saying Harry was too reckless looking for the win, or maybe Cole is just saying it was worth taking that risk to get the win, which pissed Harry off and makes him kick Cole’s ass for being a egomaniac that values the thrill of victory over life is itself (which Harry secretly is too)… not really sure what that line/reaction really mean, but either way, they both come to the conclusion that the high of victory is worth risking death… i dig it, balls to the wall or nothing, one f’in speed

@@trickatreat2136 I wish Tony Scott would’ve done commentary on this scene for what he was going for here. Like at first you feel like Cole is accusing Harry of killing Buddy and then making like whether he set up the car wrong or not he let Buddy die when he could’ve prevented it and now he’s trying to keep Cole from walking that same fate and even saying Rowdy wouldn’t do it for Cole so why do it. Basically saying he wants to die for the chance at Winning Daytona.
@@trickatreat2136 I think Cole mean't that Buddy was struggling in the race. Yeah, he was mumbling about how fast the car was, but it was due to the carbon monoxide slowly taking over the driver, which ended in a fatal crash.
Just think about it. Buddy was perhaps a contender for the first spot on the podium, but something was taking over him. Something deadlier than a fast car. Being a driver as arrogant as Cole was up to that point, Buddy thought that nothing bad could happen, and then he lost his consciousness because of the carbon monoxide in the cabin. Crashed, lost his life.
Harry didn't want another driver like Buddy -fast as hell, arrogant and full of passion of driving, not noticing the clear and present danger. Buddy was going for the win, just as Cole was when he crashed in the "big one" earlier in the movie.
Harry wanted to end his career, but Cole pushed him further and basically begged him into building anohter race car. Not only for the win in the "grand finale" and saving his friend's life, but for defeating Harry's inner demons of his wrong decisions.

This is kinda Eeery. "Buddy" Bretherton supposedly died of a heart attack (not 100% sure honestly) but if he died @ Daytona, then it comes off sorta like foreshadowung Dale She's Death. Idk jus thinking out loud Sry My bad
Yeah underneath all of the action scenes and the character drama is the fact that THIS IS a dangerous sport that puts these driver's mortality at stake every race and as the good doctor (Nicole Kidman's character) states any type of semblance of having control while in the race is just a illusion.
Weak script
As far as I know, Tom Cruise had a big influence on the script, so ... well 😒

That was always the weakest part of the film, had they got some very good screenwriters on the script and reworked it, it would have been a much better film. Can only wonder at what could have been.
