I have great respect for you Pete, we need to have some semblance of reason in this area. If we are going to eat meat, and we will, there will be somethings that appear to be harsh and maybe are. You do a great job of modeling one way it can be done. I am a hunter and I do everything I can to take animals quickly and cleanly. I have spent enough time out in the wild to tell you that very few if any predators in that environment kill as quickly of as cleanly as yours do. I grew up farming and left for another career, but I do know you do things well and criticism of what you do is petty at best,

    Hello Pete & Hillary
I wanted to comment on your video yesterday when you were taking your pigs to market. I could sense in your demeanor you were feeling somewhat discouraged and perhaps wondering if your UA-cam contributions are worth it all. You have brought this up in the best and I was proud of you when you decided to continue making videos. I think I speak for many that watch your videos that we thoroughly enjoy them every time we watch them. I remember when those pigs were born and how we watched them grew, and finally the day they are shipped to be processed. I raise animals for the same purpose, and no one enjoys the final process, but it is why they are raised in the first place. Please don’t let those that push for animal rights cause you to doubt what you are doing. No one will ever do something that everyone agrees on, that’s what is so great about so much diversity. You both will ultimately need to make the decision whether to go on or stop sharing videos, but for me, I hope you continue. I can see you appreciate your animals and enjoy sharing them with others. My best regards to you in the coming new year. Thanks for sharing life on the farm on “Just A Few Acres”

Pete, Hilarie, and Family do a great job.
Man it is sad at how disconnected the consumers are and then the "animal rights" activists on top of it, is not fun to deal with.
Logic and Reasoning ( what I equate to the cliche phrase "common sense" ) are sadly lacking for many, but are needed in all aspects of life.
Tolerance is another trait we need more of.
@Pete, Keep up the good work and hope you can plow through the bad comment BS of UA-cam/Social-Media.

I’m a small family farmer in Maine. I have a family of 6 and we produce 100% of our own meat and sell to family and friends. I have had these issues too. People don’t understand that food doesn’t magically show up on store shelves ready for cooking. The meat we raise here is given such a good life, and just one bad day. I love watching your farm evolve and pray I can expand to your scale of farm someday. Until then, we will continue to advocate for homegrown food and educating people on humanly raised meat. Thank you for your authenticity!

This channel is the reason I decided to raise 5 pigs of my own this year. It gave me the knowledge to tackle this type of challenge for the very first time. I didn’t grow up on a farm, but always had a passion for it. When I had to unload my pigs at the butcher, 4 pigs locked up. I was encouraged to step on, kick and pull tales to get them off… I refused to do so. I tried to push and get them turned around but when they lock their legs and lay down in the trailer, I wasn’t winning anytime soon. When I was offered to use the « green stick » I didn’t hesitate, I knew what to expect because of this channel, it was the most humane and best tool for the job. Thanks Pete and Hillary for showing the « easy » and the « hard » sides of farming. You have my utmost respect.

I'm a city girl too but I remember when I was in school (in the late 60s) we had field trips to a real farm to see live pigs, chickens and cows, and were able to see how we really got milk from cows (not just from a carton in the store) and that these were the animals that fed all of us. Kids today are shielded from the basic food process, and have no clue that pork chops come from pigs or milk comes from cows. If they do, they have no idea HOW we get those food items.

Pete, my husband and I and our 3 year old son have been watching all your videos this winter. My son calls your show “the farm show with pigs” and we watch a lot of different farming shows on UA-cam, yours is his favorite. You are an extremely humble rare human being, I wish the world had a few more of you, it would be a better place. I’ve personally grown up on 20 acres with animals all my life, we raised pigs and steers for meat most of my life. Meanwhile my husband grew up in town with the local school in his backyard, who got to have some chickens and ducks in his childhood. My dad and his twin brother started out with a herd of cows and pig operation and when farming took a toll they sold out and invested into mobile home business with rentals. You have the life I truly believe my dad would of had if they continued farming full time. You have the life my husband and I aspire to have our entire marriage of 6 years. We now have a herd of Dexters that started with 3 pregnant cows and we now have 19, 3 years later. Our first 2 go to butcher in January. Your channel is inspiring and rare in form with this current world, please keep it up, don’t get discouraged. The things you and your family do are incredible. May God bless you all

I am an engineer at 10 years and just moved up a rung. Before watching your videos I did have that sense of emptiness at work. I have made some moves to try and achieve what you have done. I only have 10 acres but have quickly found the small farmer support group both in my community and on UA-cam. I don’t think I will have a problem getting started with what I have.
The people every step of the way are amazing. If the engineering world was only filled with the kind and genuine people I have found from getting hey, pigs and feed. I think so many few people realize how many cool people are out there when you slow down to meet them.
What was raise enough chickens and pigs to pay for free meat has turned into something different mostly from the inspiration found on your channel and how I have related to your experience.
For me at this point it’s all about meeting people and learning new things. Something I forgot in my professional life. Maybe I can change that to.

Pete, my hubby and I have been around farming a lot of our lives. My hubby worked on farms when he was younger, and my family had a milk hauling business. You run a top-notch operation and we love watching as you are our number one channel. We can't wait for the next video please don't leave us. If others take offense to what you are doing, in which our ancestors have done for ever then they need to watch something else. We watch other channels and decide yes, we like or no we don't, and Ya know what the ones we don't well, we don't go back to. What a simple solution. We don't stick around and bully anyone into our way of thinking. You and Hillary are wonderful loving people don't change a thing because of the nay sayers. Love your channel and you guys too. What a fine idea using Bossy Pig as a transitional step! It is amazing how each enduring farm adapts to remain relevant to the market and the farmer's limitations and dreams.
People who object without balance fail to see how many farms and families would be devastated to heed their tantrums. We would be a lesser society without wonderful small farms and families as yours, Pete. Enjoy the holidays, and may you and yours be blessed with a prosperous joy-filled New Year.

Hey Pete, one of the troubling things to me has been the " humanizing" of animals. All the children's movies a TV shows show the animals with human expressions and feelings. That and the greater separation between consumers and the realities of Agra business. The animals are not pets. In this world of extremes every issue becomes "us vs them"! Unfortunately I see this as the result of ignorance. How can you have civil discourse while plugging your ears when an opposing viewpoint is express. This makes me sad as well. Keep up the good work and Happy New Year!

I hate to say this out loud, but I spent 30+ years in the picture business and it's so much more sinister than the general population will ever understand. I'm not a conspiracy guy, I'm talking about things I've seen and ultimately what led to my "invitation to leave" the biz. There is ZERO programming for children on mainstream, it's "indoctrination/education through animation" (not my term) to create "better citizens". I've been in those meetings, the networks are actively working against you. Mainstream TV should be what we're seeing here on JAFAF.

Hi Pete, I just wanted to say thank you for your videos and for raising your animals the way you do. You don't have 'top of the line equipment', but you do have functionality, and I think that's the most important thing to make sure you have. Your showing us how to have a farm even if you can't get the newest thing, not only that, your animals are happy and thriving. Personal would I like to give the breeder pigs slightly larger pens? Yes, but that's a me thing, not only that you have already said that your in the planning stages of new places for them. It's just going to take time, and like you said, it can't be done all at once. A corporate business, something nonliving, doesn't run like that, so why in the world would we expect a farm to? I mean for crying out loud you will only see returns when you sell the animals or products from them, meaning you only really get paid for them 3-4 times a year. You probably have to plan out goals a year in advance and see what you can accomplish based on the market for when the products are actually sold. Sorry for the rant, all this was just me trying to say, thank you for everything you do. Don't let the fools get you down.
Happy New Year, best of luck and well wishes to you and your family.

The trailer has useful features for shifting critters around. Pigs are notorious for just being uncooperative unless it’s something they want to do. Getting OFF the trailer right at first wasn’t what they wanted to do. I remember your chat about “purposeful” goals on the farm - that’s sensible. Red has produced some gorgeous litters - and served her purpose admirably. My observation has been that you certainly treat your animals with purpose and reason. It shouldn’t have to be said by you - but I’m glad you did take the time to chip away at the blockheads who just don’t see reason. Wishing you ALL the joy and success in the coming year, and looking forward to watching your progress toward your heritage breed goals - and the rest of your endeavors.

I believe that there are a lot of things that need to be improved in modern farming, but I think you do a great job trying to reach a balance between being a responsible farmer and running a business that feeds people. I do appreciate your efforts to run a farm that sustainably utilizes the land, does not make the animals suffer needlessly, and passes the realistic cost of farming onto the client. I was an adult when I really had the chance to be around big pasture pigs. Boy they are HUGE and incredibly strong. I by myself could not budge even the smallest ones. They also have jaws and teeth that will tear flesh and crush bone. I respect your handling of your pigs. There was no yelling to scare them. It was just the reality of doing something completely foreign that caused the hold up. Even then no yelling. And your choice to take Red was logical and reasoned. I think the loudest complainers are people who do not live in farm areas and envision ALL farms as massive industrial places. That in no way is your farm! Also the activists think all slaughter houses are big industrial set ups. Not like your local place at all. It really feels awful to be tarred and feathered as though you raised your pigs in cruelty and took them to a cruel place for slaughter. My wish for the New Year is that activists would learn who and what they are criticizing before they get out the tar. And then they should refrain from hysterics while hiding behind the internet. God Bless you and your family, Pete---and that goes for the animals you care for so well, too.
