- (17 Oct 2016) RANDY TRAVIS STUNS, SINGS AT COUNTRY HALL OF FAME
Country singer Randy Travis found his distinctive voice three years after a life-threatening stroke and sang "Amazing Grace" during his induction Sunday (16 OCT. 2016) into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The Grammy-winning baritone singer battled back the stroke in 2013 to sing again during the medallion ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee. He was inducted along with fiddler Charlie Daniels and record producer Fred Foster.
Fellow artists including Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks and more honored the three inductees with musical tributes.
But it was Travis' singing that brought a stunned silence and tears to the crowd after years of rehabilitation and therapy to regain his voice.
Mary Davis-Travis, his wife, spoke about the numerous procedures and surgeries to save his life and a six-month stay in the hospital after a viral infection caused his stroke.
"Randy stared death in the face, but death blinked," Davis-Travis said. "Today God's proof of a miracle stands before you."
The 57-year-old singer was honored for being the first country artist whose debut album "Storms of Life" went platinum in its first year and he ushered in a wave of neo-traditional singers like Alan Jackson, Clint Black and Brooks in the 1990s.
Jackson, who performed "On the Other Hand," talked about going out on tour with Travis in the early '90s and compared him to Elvis.
"When he sang, the women were screaming and fainting and it was crazy," Jackson said. "I loved it. Someone singing real country music and having that effect and selling all those records, it just made me so happy."
Daniels, the fiddler player behind the hit song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," was honored for his multi-genre style blending Southern rock, bluegrass, gospel and country music.
"A plaque on this wall is not just another award or accolade," Daniels said. "It's a page in a history book. An unending history book."
Jamey Johnson performed his song, "Long Haired Country Boy," while Trace Adkins performed "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," with fiddler Andrea Zonn.
Foster ran the influential Monument Records, which helped launch the careers of Roy Orbison, Willie Nelson as well as Parton and Kristofferson. Kristofferson sang his iconic song "Me and Bobby McGee," which Foster helped co-write and produce, while Parton sang "Dumb Blonde," from her debut album produced by Foster.
Parton praised Foster for giving her a shot and still being a gentleman when Porter Wagoner "stole" her away to be on his television show.
Vince Gill presented him with the medallion and noted Foster was a lover of great songs and a champion of unique singers.
"But everyone of us needs a champion," Gill said. "And you look like at a man like Fred Foster and there's a man that has been a champion for all these years."
The 85-year-old producer is still currently working and most recently produced a tribute album to Ray Price by Nelson.

Randy Travis is a legend
John Qualls I zombie
Love Randy Travis always will and always will be the man
@John Qualms . He sure is! More than a Legend but one for sure! He sang the Lord's word and when he was losing his battle, in a coma and the doctors told his wife she should pull the plug on Randy, she went to Randy still in a coma, and she asked him if he wanted to fight this! She said he squeezed her hand and a tear rolled down his cheek and she knew right then that he wanted to and would FIGHT THIS THING! And he did. The Lord said it wasn't his time to go. He always spread the Lord's word in his singing and the Lord said he wasn't done. FOREVER AND EVER AMEN.. 🙏
@@djtrump2101 He's far from being a zombie if that's what you're trying to say about Randy! Look at the newer things that he's been doing and singing is a big part of it. He's one of the best Country singers of all time! The Lord said his work is not done. He's living proof of the Lord's miracles every day.🙏

He's one of the best signers ever, and I'm saying that as a person who is primarily a rock music fan. Randy Travis could croon with the best of them. In an earlier era, he could have been another Sinatra. I'm sorry for his hardships, hope he has a strong recovery. Thanks for the great music Mr. Travis. You are one of a kind.

How sweet tha sound
Amazing Grace, How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
T'was blind but now I see
T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear
And Grace, my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils and snares
We have already come.
T'was grace that brought us safe thus far
And grace will lead us home,
And grace will lead us home
Amazing grace, Howe Sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
T'was blind but now I see
Was blind, but now I see.
I heard a black man say Amazing Grace was written down using just the black keys of a piano. I sure hope that's true, as I have repeated that story since I saw it on Bill & Gloria Gaither's music show!
God bless 🙏
Randy is an awesome guy.
Randy Travis is an American legend in Country Music! God Bless him
I love Randy so much!!!
stroke sucks I had a massive one two years ago eyes are still messed up I thank God Im alive
JaBari Ellison hope you have a full recovery!
Michael M. Michael M. While I agree with you, there's a time and a place for everything. Consider it not being on a comment about a person's debilitating stroke.
We have human bodies that are open to illness. God knows this and is sovereign. He has not made us robots that he controls. Sometimes He does choose to do miracles, and other times He allows things that difficult as they may be to us, inspire, encourage and motivate us to be better. If life was perfect all the time, we wouldn't have the valleys in life to teach and cause us to call on Him.
JaBari Ellison God bless you friend!!!!!
Michael M. He has his reasons 1 day every knee shall bend and every tongue shall confess THAT HE is LORD!!!!!! Peace
This is awesome
Very awesome
Suffered a stroke 1 year ago and it is a long recovery process, I wish him well.
@Kelly Norman people like you suffer through life, because you hate yourself. Pathetic response from an even more pathetic human.
@Kelly Norman Well, Kelley, I like your enthusiasm.
@Kelly Norman that's rude
We wish you well too, Jim.
All the wonderful "un woke folks" in America.

Randy Travis would have to be one of the best modern country singings to grace the stage.
might be, but way after Keith Whitley would... (to me, he was quite boring actually, sorry, luckily tastes differ - I am happy he is still alive and doing reasonably well.
great man great legend beautiful soul. congrats Randy you truly deserve this honor.
He looks good !
Randy you got country music to return to its roots when it went astray. You let young singers know singing COUNTRY, true heart felt country, was just right and we all thank you for it. Love you Randy.
@@1171 I’m so very sorry that you lost your brother. My heart felt sympathies. He sounds like he was such a fun person to be with. My two brothers, my sister and I are very close. We are military brats who moved practically every year so we were best friends with little time in one place to make other friends. Losing anyone of them would be devastating. Your pain at your loss had to be excruciating. I hope you have found peace with his passing. God bless. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Breaks my freaking heart
I wish Garth Brooks had not shown up. Damn it I don’t know what it is about that guy but he creeps me out big time. Love R.T. Since I first heard his voice. So damn sad he is struggling these days.... very unfortunate.
