She was really the only Shard of Manus that triumphed over what she was born out of because she was the only one that directly was exposed to her greatest fear with the help of someone else who is very clearly the strongest of all of the Kings and that King inspired courage in the Incarnation of fear to the point she made a new purpose for herself

i have to say, the story about the relationship between the ivory king and the fearful fragment of Manus was something I found really touching. The Ivory king knew her dark nature, knew that she married him so that she could sustain herself, and he accepted it; He provided comfort to a frightful being that any other man would simply have killed, he entrusted her with his city despite her inherently dark nature, he helped her to rise above said nature, and I well and truly find that incredibly touching

The fact that the Ivory King gave Alsanna his city, with the lives of his people, really told how much he trusted her and her ability to not give in to her "dark side". Honestly what kind of true love...

Isn't it messed up how almost everyone whose lives the Chaos Flame ruins is basically a great person? Darkness is not inherently evil, nor is chaos...
darkness births fear and dread and chaos seeks to spread, yet neither inherently seeks to destroy of its own desire... that which is spawned of chaos and dark is that which may be evil.

You know, I think I've quite fallen in love with the Ivory King. The first to draw his sword in defense of the innocent. A man who accepted a child of dark into his life, home, and kingdom. A man who sacrificed himself to protect the world from chaos. A man who had such faith in an incarnation of fear, that he inspired that incarnation to uphold a sacred duty until the end of time...
The word "hero" is used quite frequently, usually without acknowledging the gravity of the word, but I believe that the Ivory King fully deserved to be called one.

The Ivory King should be more than just a hero, he should be a fucking legend among kings and warriors, for he was truly legendary in both, a wise king with near impossible power and an even stronger character.
I say he deserves being beside Artorias, for while Artorias valiantly fought the Abyss the Ivory King fought the chaos with similar valor and even made a fragment of Manus to a devoted, kind queen.

No matter how hard you struggle or how honorable your intentions, you will never be more than a pawn to greater forces, manipulated by honor, greed, love, or desperation. Dark Souls. A game of Dark Stories with dark unfortunate ends. Why does this one raise such hope? In the depths of Sunken City the world avoided the end of the world. At the cost of The Iron Kings mine.
The Iron King becoming less of the man he was created many things to fill the void his dear friend Alonne left. Cost him life and Soul as his greatest creation turned on him and tossed him lava.
Vendrick pushed to the brink with all the events unfolding around him. The Giants slaying all his men. His trusted knights fighting amongst themselves. His Kingdom was being taken over by the Dark. In the end he fled and hollowed.
The Ivory King. Was different than the others. The Sunken King built the Kingdom to honor what he saw as a god. Iron King wanted a kingdom of his own. Ivory King. His name is unknown but his story will not be forgotten. The first king to take up sword for others. He took in a child of dark. Comforting her and giving her strength. When the Chaos came he knew what must be done. He left his queen to hold back the chaos. With his belief she believed in herself and held the chaos long after his demise. His strength was what all men have but are afraid to use. The Iron king had strength. The sunken king unbreakable faith. All that Ivory King had was compassion. Giving him more strength than all before him.

I can see why the knights of the Ivory kingdom were so full of zeal. Their King truly was a terrifying hero in every sense of the word. Sometimes being a hero requires sacrifice. This king gave everything in order to stop what was coming forth. I think I would be happy to be able to follow someone who was able to give up so much in order to PROTECT so much more...
Even if you can't beat something, you can always find a way to stop it, or at least slow it down. The Ivory King was so devoted that even a shard of evil, a shard of chaos, was willing to change her ways and follow him, and take up the fight. I find the Ivory King to be a true warrior. He fights for a world where the dark and light can live peacefully, side by side. He saw the mistakes that he and those of the past made, and he sought to right these mistakes. He followed his own ambitions that were tempered by his own wisdom and the wisdom of his people. Where we find weakness, he finds purpose. Even when he knows that his power is fading, he does not hold any of it back. In the end, unlike kings of the past, he saw that his death would mean more than his life. The other kings fled and feared their opponents. The Ivory King accepted his fears and the fears of those who stood by him and turned these fears into his strength. The Ivory King has my respect.

Nashandra is Manus' desire. She covets the throne, and all her weapons reference 'want'. This reflects Manus' hunt for his broken pendant, and possibly his 'love' for Dusk.
Elana represents his rage, hence the 'Wrathful Axe'. Manus was obviously susceptible to anger, and that's probably what created the Abyss.
Nadalia possibly represents his loneliness. She arrived at the palace of her lover, to find that he had already 'died'. She lingers in the Brume Tower, waiting for her king to return. Manus, deep down, was just human. And who knows how long he had been alone?

loneliness is a key theme in the item discription and her story but still don't get how that is conected to chime of screams. All I can think of is to cry out in despair.
What you said is plausable but the other queens started alone aswell. The only diffrence this queen drew people to her so she would not be alone and pain would be a side affect of her loneliness not a starting trait like weakness or anger.
Each queen clearly exibits a trait key that defines who they are minus Nadalia who is defined by happenings around her instead of a inate driving motivation like the other queens.

  • @Hardrada_129
    @Hardrada_129 3 роки тому +32

This story shows how important motives can be. The Ivory King is a reflection of Lord Gwyn. Both were great kings of great power who sacrificed themselves to Flame for the sake of something greater.
The Ivory King faced down the Flame of Chaos for the sake of his beloved, and his people. He stood as the first line of defense for his kingdom and through wisdom and mercy he built a grand life for his subjects in what would otherwise be an inhospitable slab of land in frozen Eleyum Loyce. And he knew that his queen was a child of the Abyss, and a fragment of dark who only married him for protection. And yet he loved her anyway, believing in her to be more than her father's daughter.
Gwyn, however, was a selfish and stubborn King. He couldn't accept the failing of his soul and his kingdom, and was willing to sacrifice anything and everything to keep his Age of Fire. Gwyn's linking of the First Flame was done for nobody but himself. To extend his own Age of Fire, and to cast out the dark that he feared so greatly, he enslaved and abused mankind, destroying whole cities to subvert the cause of the Abyss.
Both Kings, in the end, made sacrifices that at face value seem noble and brave. However, when we analyze their respective motives, we see how one was good, and the other bad. And if the Ivory King were the Lord of Sunlight, the world of Dark Souls would be much different. For he loved his wife and his people, and Gwyn loved his Age of Fire.

Yeah of all the Kings and Knights we see in Dark Souls I would say Ivory King is the most noble.
He chose to be at the forefront of his fight to sit in front of his enemy.
When a lady of darkness came to him he did not cast her out but protected her and eventually completely undid her natural tendency to hide.
He is my favorite character in the Soul series and the best thing to come out of DS2

Yes, FROM do like to reuse aspects from previous games. There are 4s everywhere in Dark Souls; Four Lords, Four Knights of Gwyn, Four Kings, Four evil queens.
      I strongly doubt there's a connection in-lore.

We only FIND four Crowns; there are certainly more.
Eleum Loyce, Shulva, Iron Kingdom and Drangleic are all kingdoms occupying the same 'land' as Lordran (not necessarily literal; they are just Lordran's equivalents), each is in it's own cycle. But then there's Alken, Venn, Heide and Olaphis. They were all kingdoms before Drangleic, so naturally they would also have kings and crowns. It just happens that we only need four to free ourselves from the curse.

Usually I love listening to Vaatis narration but with this and Lucatiels Prepare to Cry all I want is for the voice actress to keep going and tell me more.

I feel so much power from the simple scene when you and the group of knight landed down in the Old Chaos, it looks so, strong. Almost throughout the series we fights alone, even with the appearance of phantoms, Seeing fully alive and prepared group of loyal men, dive down along with you to aid in duty, so that they can help you and the Queen to put Their King to rest, just, so much power from it. Probably because it's pretty rare

Young hollow there are many monarchs who have come and gone. One killed by the ambitions of a crazed man in search of a dragon. Another succumbed to greed and pride and for that he drowned in the bed of lava which he had made. A third...hmm...was a true king. A man who didn't acknowledge his power nor his strength but a man who protected his people and gave comfort to his child of dark. Learn from their mistakes hollow, except for the third for he had none instead learn from his teachings. The teachings of a true leader.

Has anyone noticed that the Ivory king has a similiar life and things like Artorias?. Think about it. In the obvious parts both Ivory king and Artorias are left handed, and they both fell to evil trying to stop it. Artorias has a friend Cif, and Ivory kings favorite pet is Aava. Cif suffers for the death of Artorias and tries to prevent you to take his place and Aava when you enter her fight without The priestess eye the queen says that Aava misses her lord. If you give Aava a bit more lore you could say that she not only guards the queen. She guards the gate to prevent you to get the chaos to become evil or fall like her lord. Also both Ivory king and Artorias are the most talented knights of the kingdom. (Despite Ornstein being gwyns knights captain its clear that artorias was the most skilled). Also If you look at the queen Alsanna and Ciaran they also share something. Its true Alsanna is the fragment of manus but to Win the kings heart she must attract him in some way so that leads me to bealive that she shared Ciarans attitude on some way (while its true artorias never showed ciaran some affection we cant say he didnt like her during his life since artorias never speaks of her but we cant discard the fact that he may have liked her a little. So this is why I think Alsanna share things with ciaran in attitude). Example Both Ciaran and Alsanna Want to honor the death of their friend and lord, they both throw aside the nature of their being. Ciaran retires from being the lords blade and honors artorias in his grave and alsanna stops being a dark person at heart after she fell in love for Ivory king for being her protector and honors him by guarding chaos. Now last thing I noticed. Ciaran after she retires she gives you her weapons which are 2 very different blades and alsanna gives you her soul which you can use to make a sword with 2 very different ends, one dark and light. Similar to Ciarans weapons.

I may be late to this video, but I'll never forget a detail I discovered for myself in this story.
While it's hard to make out what Nadalia and Elana may have looked like in their human states, Nashandra was described as a woman of unparalleled beauty. When finally reaching Alsanna atop the stairs after her trust in you finally peaks, focusing in on what little you can make out of her physical appearance will reveal she was... not.. quite as gifted as Nashandra in that regard.
And the Ivory King wed her anyway.
That stuck with me ever since I played this dlc for the first time. I refuse to believe Alsanna's model was made poorly unintentionally. It was meant to add to the enormous pile of evidence of just how selfless the Ivory King was. In a series of lore that is absolutely packed with depressing and upsetting themes and stories, this one stood out so much more because of that. As cheesy as it may sound, the Ivory King is exactly the type of person I would strive to be in a fantasy world like this. I shout out to whom may be my favorite character in all of gaming. One without a name or a single line of dialogue...

If we ever at some point, some how, get to build our own kingdom through either DLC or Dark Souls 3
I will do as the Ivory King did. Sure he was strong, most kings in the Dark soul universe were strong.
But he was more than "just" that. He has shown us that darkness can be conquered with compassion and love.
    Like Vendrick said:
*Inherit fire, and harness the dark. Such is the calling of a true leader.*
Every king we have met or heard of so far have shunned darkness trying to destroy it or fallen to its temptations.
The Ivory King is singular in his actions among kings.

Would like to say my opnion about Manus and the Children of Dark:
Manus' humanity ran wild. But what is "humanity"? It is, well, what defines us as humans. Humanity is capable of great Good, and great Evil. Great Selflessness, and great Greed. Harmony and Destruction.
When such thing grows uncontrollably, the being cant cope with such anbigous will, and go crazy. Manus, the Abyss, and everyone claimed by it arent EVIL, they are INSANE. At least by our standards, just afraid of us, as we are of them.
All the queens seeked power, or at least self satisfaction or confort. The Ivory King is great, because he willing offered confort for his queen of dark, but seemed to understand the concept that is being made of "wild humanity". He managed to change a being make of FEAR, into a selfless, and even BRAVE being, as she stands alone, to hold a great power she can never stop.
That reflects the fact that humanity isnt something set on stone. It can change. For worse, or for better.
One last thing: Some of what I said also can be applied for the Old Chaos. The chaos created by the Witch of Izalith, nor it's demons, are EVIL. Probably just afraid of us, wanting to defend themselfs. The best example is The Fair Lady, and to a degree, Queelag. This dont change the fact that, if left unkept, the Old Chaos could probably destroy A LOT of the world. But then again, it would just be a new step on the evergoing circle of renovation that exists in the world of Dark Souls

Alsanna's dialogue is one of those bits of story that I'm fairly certain I'll never retrieve at this point, due to the difficult grind of farming enough Loyce Souls today. But it's also one of the most fascinating and well-acted pieces of story in all the games. Her fear, her affection, and her conviction all shine through spectacularly, and her words link various pieces of lore, reveal a different side of the "Abyss," and still keep us wrapped up in questions. Definitely a worthy reward for all the effort it would have taken.
