    New to tying. Bought a starter kit and it came with the exact first vise you showed. While it works fine, I have ran into missing i didnt get the material all the way around the hook. I just ordered the spider vise you showed. Looking forward to using it. Thank you for all your videos. I have learned so much from you. Great Job!

      Thank you Jerry!!!! I used a standard 2A vise for a long time and when I went to a rotary it was a true gamechanger!!!! The toughest thing with a regular vise is not being able to get to the other side of the jig without taking it out of the vise and repositioning it. Congrats on ordering a better vise and I hope you enjoy tying on it!!!

    I should have added.... Good info on tools. I'm trying to understand what I can make DIY, and which I need to buy. Thanks for concise and easy to understand dialog about both the tools and the comments on the vice.

      I'm glad the info helped you!! Remember, making certain things yourself may end up costing more than buying it. A lot of the basic tools aren't expensive so look around and check prices.

    Love this video, I wish I could have seen it when it aired. As I have said I just came across the site this past year.
    I’ve already learned so much from you. Wish I had a way to send you a picture of a few of my silicone jigs since learning from the master. I would love to have someone critique my work so I can improve. Thank you so much for all your knowledge.

    Just bought a used vice, that I haven't recieved yet. I believe it is a basic Super II vice. But it was described as a Bass Pro Shop item. I was very much wanting a rotary type, but at the same time I don't want a lot of expense at the beginner stage I'm at. I have looked at the rotary vices out there. I think I might be able to set up a rotary shaft that would have bearings and rotation control. I think I can work out the design of the "T" where the bearings are. Then I will take the vice off of the original shaft and mount it on a shaft with a angle down (a part of the shaft coming out of the "T") with the same type of mount of the original mount but pointed back up to mimic the Peak.... I don't want to tear up the vice by dismantling and bending the original shaft. My goal is to see a Peak style that I have crafted from the El Cheapo that I bought. I might try to use the vice as is at first because I want to make some Panfish, Bass type jig lures.

      I'm familiar with the super II vise, it is sold by Cabela's. The problem is the jaws, these are only $20 brand new so I don't know what you paid for it. The jaws are rated for a size #2 hook maximum which means if you tie regular size bass stuff the locking mechanism will fail pretty fast. It will cost you more to make that vise into a better one than buying one simply because the locking mechanism isn't designed for much more than flies and panfish jigs. you'd have to redesign that and have new parts machined. You can buy the vise I use for around $80 and it has a lifetime warranty. I understand not wanting to spend a lot but you need a vise that will hold the hook firmly and what you got will only work for small jigs, I think staying with size #6 and #4 hooks will be better most of the time as it does struggle with a size #2 if you use pressure to tie which is required with a lot of materials.

      @@smalljaw well, it is with shipping as much as a new one..... eBay is where I saw it. I'm kinda hoping it works good and isn't worn out since it was used. I'm working on a Peak style rotary system to convert it. I noted what you said about the jaw limits. There is a name brand that has a square vice body with a tightening screw at the butt end and an adjustment screw at the pointed vice tip...it had a square socket(it appeared to be like that) that looked to make the travel of the vice tip, be adjustable to the axis of the rotary horizontal shaft. I wish I knew how to do a video with only my Android phone. It can be fairly easy to mimic a Peak, just not quite as fancy. I think in terms of mechanical ways to create something that might be made in a typical turning lathe for something like this. Using wheel bearings and a piece of pipe, and a set of tap and dies, I think I can make one that isn't totally clunky looking. I hope to combine the vice part with my rotary part. I don't intend to cut up the clamp and shaft mount, but to make the vertical shaft to the rotary part be a new setup. If I am successful, I may try to do a video and post it. So far all I've done is a photo of the pieces. photos.app.goo.gl/M1dGxrPmXEudN6Cd9

      @@genesloan3175 I understand what you are doing but doing it with the vise you are getting will be a futile effort. The jaws of that vise are not made of tool steel, so even making a better locking devise to apply more pressure will only cause the steel jaw to indent and cause the hook to slip. Making what you want is cool if you just want to make it but doing it to save expense isn't going to work with what you are getting. It may have a rotary function but the vise you are working with is only $20 for a reason, good enough to get started with small flies and jigs but it won't last long. I guess what I'm trying to say is you are putting a lot of effort into something not really worth it unless you just want to see if you can make it work even for a short time. Good luck with the project

      @@smalljaw understood, and I will try it as is, in any case. The fact that I want to tie Crappie lures may be the problem....I'm gonna want sz 1and 2, with other sz 4, 6, and 8 hooks, so if it's difficult to use for the bigger ones, it may be disappointing.
      Thanks for your videos, I'm still going through all of them....they are good for me to see good techniques in use. The tying materials is going to be expensive. Is Barlow's the best reasonable cost, or just they have everything. I'm in a rural setting. It's 85 miles to nearest BP Shops, so not a likely trip for me to make.

      @@genesloan3175 Your vise will serve as a good one to learn with to tie crappie jigs. You can use a size #1 in the vise but if you use that a lot the vise will have a shorter life. As for materials, I use Barlow's for most of my stuff as it is a 1 stop shop so only 1 shipping fee to pay. I will say this, you can go on ebay and find a lot of materials for cheap. There is a place called "granpa bobs custom jigs, he has the cheapest prices that you will find but you don't know if you will get your stuff in 3 days or 3 months. Good luck on tying and let me know if you need help.

    Another great video! I'm a 67 year old jig and fly tyer, I wish videos like this was around when I started fly tying! To many young guys see the small complicated trout flys and all the material that's used for them and think they can't afford the stuff or that, it is to complicated. Your vides solve that problem and get the new guys involved! Thanks for all your videos.

    Thanks, your videos are the reason I decided to see if I can tie my own jigs. The only thing I can not find is wire on a spool to fit my bobbin which looks just like the one you call your favorite. I have tried the thread for TW but it catches on the hook as I wrap around avoiding the weed guard and it tends to fray. So I want to use wire but can't find it on a spool to fit my bobbin. Can you help me out?

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  8 років тому

      +Winter Craighead (winterhawk78) I take it you want to wire tie, correct? if you look at my video of wire tying a swim jig you'll see how it is done. You don't run wire on a spool like thread and when tying with a weed guard in place you can, and will nick the thread but practice will help keep it to a minimum.

    • @winterhawk78
      @winterhawk78 8 років тому

      i've seen most all of your vids, I was really hopping you could help me find the wire on a spool that would fit on the bobbin. I have seen a few vids where people have used it before. thought you might know where?

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  8 років тому

      +Winter Craighead (winterhawk78) The wire is available at Barlows Tackle or most fly shops, it is on a spool and you can use it with a bobbin but it isn't for tying like you want, the wire is very thin and used for ribbing, you can't tie a jig with it.

    • @winterhawk78
      @winterhawk78 8 років тому

      I was hoping to find it on a spool so I can use it with the bobbin. will this work? www.bluequillangler.com/Products/Wire/UTC-Ultra-Wire#.Vm8iFWdUCHs

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  8 років тому

      +Winter Craighead (winterhawk78) That is the only wire available on a spool, it comes in different colors but it isn't made for tying a jig. It made for ribbing and to add weight to flies, it is to thin and won't hold on a large jig. Look at some fly tying videos on flies that use ribbing, it isn't going to work for what you want.

    Thanks, this is good info for me. I'm thinking about getting into tying walleye jigs and bucktails. Which leads me to a question. For tying muskie bucktails, is there any other tools you'd recommend? Don't know if the heavier thread used or heavier bucktail material would require different tools. Thanks again.

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  8 років тому

      +MsPrincesspaulina Thanks for watching!!! If you want to tie musky bucktails you will need a larger vise and I would recommend Gel Spun thread 280 denier, you can tell if it is gel spun as it was be marked "GSP".

    great video. just a question, the 2a vise you talk about first, what size hook can it go to and from?

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  8 років тому

      +Jack Hawley It depends on the 2A vise, most can take up to a 3/0 hook but they are all different. Griffin vises seem to have a wider range of hook sizes they can hold.
