Florida has plenty of outdoor markets thanks to the weather BUT that same weather means most people don't want to wear crochet items due to the heat. I don't even make blankets during the summer cuz it's just too hot.
I don’t blame you at all on that one!! It’s too hot in August to work on blankets, the thought of having it on my lap while working on it would be terrible lol!!! That makes a lot of sense! I’m guessing your climate might be better for selling more accessories like bags, home decor pieces, crochet jewelry etc, than any type of crochet wearables….. definitely something to research for sure!!!
Excellent info! I would add community colleges to the teaching ideas. I know we have two here that offer in-person classes, and a small salary to the instructor.
You can do these things for any hobby and it takes away from you actually crocheting... Why don't people just say you can't make a livable wage from actually crocheting. You will take time away from crocheting to do all this.
Having a crochet related business definitely isn’t for everyone! I agree if you did all these things you probably wouldn’t have much time left for crochet! I think it all just depends on everyone’s unique situation and what they want to accomplish. I think most people probably want to crochet and just enjoy doing it but I’d like to help anyone who is looking for a crochet side hustle. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video, Shannon! In the past, I’ve sold a crocheted purse, crocheted pot holders, and many other crafts…all through Facebook. I’ve been wanting to start selling on Etsy, but haven’t taken the time to do that yet. I don’t think I’d sell finished crocheted items unless it’s small items. I have a lot of research to do with Etsy…and UA-cam too…still so much to learn. I follow some of the same people you do for UA-cam and I also follow Channel Makers and Nate Black. Thank you for sharing! 😊
I love Nate Black too! As I was editing, I thought I should have shared his info too! I can tell you take your channel seriously, it shows in your production. Especially considering the short time you’ve been on YT!
@@ShannonTalksYarn Nate is amazing!! Thank you so much for the kind words, Shannon! ♥️ I still have so much to learn. I can’t seem to get the lighting right or the audio lol. 😊
Thank you! I’ve got a video where I talk about my 3 absolute favorite beanie patterns and where to find them. Here’s a link: 3 FREE "Go -To" Beanie Tutorials I ALWAYS Use ua-cam.com/video/K61Rr-sALC8/v-deo.html
Thank you so much! The hat is pattern from Alisha at Littlejohn’s Yarn and it’s literally one of my favorites, I’ve made it sooooo many times. The yarn I used was soft secret in brown from hobby lobby yarn bee. Here’s a link to the hat video: ua-cam.com/video/YhsSN_95txo/v-deo.htmlsi=Ks9mIsRxKigTpuTQ
What a great and informative video! Thank you so much for all the ideas and suggestions. Also, you are sooooo right about purple lovers. Their love is deep. 🤣😂❤️
Wow, congratulations on this video. In a clear, precise, and organized way, you describe most of, if not all, the crochet market world. Impressive!!! The tone, pace, and sweetness of your voice are definitely an asset for you. I'll start following you. One question: What would you recommend to an almost 70 years old granny, illiterate in e-commerce tools and social media, that wants to make some money out of her crochet?
Hello and welcome! Thank you for the feedback and encouragement, I appreciate it. If, it were me, and I wanted to avoid the internet, I would concentrate on in person markets. I would find something I enjoy making so I don't get burned out and I would focus on that. Me personally. I would probably do kitchen crochet to sell. I'm picturing dishcloths, tea towels, the towels you add the crochet to the top of for a handle, scrubbies in different sizes and textures, etc. Your have lower costs/pricepoints, quick work up time, ability to package larger sets, it's great for people to buy for gift giving and it's a type of product people need to repurchase. Do you follow Ashley at A Crafty Concept? She is a great resource for finished piece sellers. She does talk a lot about Etsy but she's got tons of market info too!
What an inspirational and educational video! Shannon, I’d love to crochet hats in the same pattern you are wearing for my daughters and granddaughter. Can you shall your pattern or what pattern you used? I’m a new subscriber. So happy You Tube suggested your channel to me. I also love Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cakes!
I’m so happy I popped up on your feed too! I really appreciate it! The hat is from Littlejohn’s Yarn, it’s an older video and I believed it’s called slouchy granny stripe beanie. In the thumbnail it’s a light pink and cream color if I remember correctly. It whips up fairly quickly, it’s a “go-to” pattern for me. And thank you for all of you kind words of encouragement ❤️
@@ShannonTalksYarn I wish I could crochet full time! I work a full time job + study part time, but I try to fit at least an hour of crochet in everyday 🧶
I love that beanie pattern, I’ve made so many of them! It’s not mine, it’s from Alicia at Littlejohn’s Yarn. It’s her granny stripe slouchy beanie. In the thumbnail it’s a pink hat with a cream trim!
Hi Sonja! Yay, I’m glad that helped!!!! I think you should totally start a channel if you’ve been wanting to! Let me suggest a couple channels to check out as you get started. Nick Nimmin has great info regarding do’s and don’ts and really explains how YT works. Think Media has a ton of videos about steps to setting up a channel and settings on your phone for filming and much more. I’m so happy for you! 😃😃😃
How would this work if the crochet projects are not your pattern? I have a channel I haven’t worked with a lot lately and I have thought of doing some videos with my crochet but I have no idea how to write my own pattern and my patterns are all purchased from someone else except for a few free ones I find here or on instagram. I would love to share my crochet on here but don’t know how to do this when I’m not the designer. I obviously wouldn’t give away the pattern or do a tutorial on how to make something but would someone just want to watch me crochet with no tutorial?
That’s an excellent question! And it shows you are an ethical person who understands intellectual property rights so you’re all ready off to a great start! So you are right about not giving away patterns that were written by someone else. Especially when they are paid patterns. So you wouldn’t want to do a tutorial on them but you can DEFINITELY show your progress and finished objects and verbally give credit to the designer and put a link to their pattern/video in the description of your video. You are actually doing that designer a favor by advertising that pattern for them. You can also mention in your video any changes you made to make it work better for you, any spots you found difficult and how you resolved it, etc. Basically, your channel would be offering pattern reviews. I hope that makes sense! Feel free to email me if you’d like, my email info is listed or you can DM me on instagram if I can help!
@@ShannonTalksYarn thank you for the info. That does make sense and I can definitely do that. I’m glad to promote their stuff cus I know what kind of work goes into a pattern and I appreciate them a lot. Do you think if it’s a free pattern that I have gotten would I be able to do a tutorial on it with out issues ?
That is a great question! Personally (and I’m not a professional at all), I think a good compromise is to maybe do a tutorial on the stitches given in the pattern, instead of going row by row. To brainstorm, you could show the piece with some process shots, and to go through a tutorial on specific stitches a person would need to complete the pattern, as a way to incentivize people to go to the pattern and download it directly. Just an idea! I am not sure the legal standpoint on monetizing a video of a pattern demonstration that is not yours. My instinct is to say that you won’t get in trouble per say; but I don’t know if the pattern maker would feel comfortable with that, because if a person just follows your tutorial, they don’t see the disclaimers/authors notes/extra details that the author has worked hard on as well
I feel attacked by that purple comment because I'm currently crocheting with purple yarn that I use for every single one of my projects so she is right lol
I hope this video can help you if you’ve thought about turning your crochet hobby into a business, but need a jumping off point!
