  • Take a tour of Patrick's off-grid Tiny House that he built on his private land. He spent 10 years building it out and spent less than $30k. The house is complete with a large attached shed, solar power, and a large garden for homesteading.

I'm 60 and plan to retire in 5 years. I have land with a 12x24 shed I'm turning into a tiny house. I have all kinds of plans for the land and plan to do most of it myself. I'm a little terrified that I'm not up to the challenge. I have a few different chronic pain issues. But I'm committed to giving it a good try.

@@christineplaton3048 No. none of these would help in a tornado or hurricane. Wind uplift is the issue with hurricane…roof design (shape) - hip roof Or round) to allow wind to move around the structure rather than get UNDER the roof (example a gable roof with overhangs/eaves). Hurricane strapping that starts at the roof assembly and goes down the structure and through the trailer is then attached to helical piers that are driven deep into the ground to secure the structure. Tornado is another story…it attacks quite differently and unless you’re in a solid concrete dome structure you’re pretty much toast if it hits.

Patrick did a great job explaining his thinking. Because he wasn't in a hurry, he could take ten years to build his house. He had the time to find and use recycled materials, which probably enabled him to build it out of pocket, and enjoy the process along the way -- and it only cost him $30K, which averages to $3k per year or $250.00 per month, . His house was small enough, when he got ready to retire he could just pull it up to his off grid property himself with his own truck. I really like his approach to the whole project, AND I like how it turned out. It is important for people to have the freedom to do their own thing, but he stuck to AND PROVED Jay Shafer's original concept. Thank you and thank him for sharing it.

I believe pocket door are under appreciated. And your use of concrete is also fabulous. The covered walkway, all the windows around your loft, the drawers and closet, I could go on!😁💚 Seldom do I see such clever, original work ON A BUDGET anymore which has convinced so many that it cannot be done today, I know that inflation and other current issues have made it seem impossible and maybe you did get this done before so much of those problems blossomed but I'm thinking not so much in your case. Anyways...I'll leave my babbling here.

He built the family home close to the main road, leaving a giant back yard where after his wife passed ,he built a tiny house for himself to retire in. He also built a sizeable work shop for his hobbies. His son then moved into the family home to raise his kids. What a great way to structure your family/property. Nobody thinks like this anymore. I'm struggling, I like the idea of having a tiny porch to have some shelter before entering... But seeing your current setup, I'm not sure I'd give up that interior floor space for the tiny front porch, since there's roofing between the house and the shed. I guess you really have to see into the future and plan for your final destination. ... But I really love your add ons. For me, the shed would have to be a bit bigger (or maybe a second shed) for you definitely need shop tools living remotely, and a few kitchen appliances and a sewing machine would be needed to make me feel at home. 💖🌞🌵😷

A nice, well thought-out tiny house. Those pull-out steps are really awesome! The wall nooks too. Patience combined with his depth of knowledge on design and construction have created a satisfying living space. All the best in your future endeavors Patrick! By the way, I didn't know that concrete could actually be beautiful.

just guessing that not everyone wants to be climbing into a loft as they age - once Patrick builds his small home he’ll have friends & family lining up to vacation with him in his tiny 😉🇨🇦🙏

Really cool ! He had some great ideas. I love the choice of the Eco Flow for electrical instead of getting involved with all kinds of separate components,.. which can get hairy.

All that concrete? It's no wonder he had to reinforce the trailer for a few thousand extra pounds of weight. He's a creative problem solver. Impressive.
I had to laugh (at myself) when after talking about doing his own spray foam insulation for $1,500, the edit jumped directly to him saying "All this *fir* came from the ..." which I initially interpreted as "fur" and my brain immediately finished his sentence "all this fur came from Barley" lol not recognizing he was actually talking about the *fir wood* he used on the interior. LOL I'm shaking my own head at myself... lol
...anyone who has ever been owned by a Husky will understand, as Husky fur is not for the weak, petty, or anal retentive. When a Husky blows their coat, you could knit a few sweaters...or a decorative rug for your tiny house. ; )
It's wonderful that Barley can sleep outside there. Huskies truly LOVE to sleep/nap outside at night on a comfortable bed when it's nice and cool.
I saw the same Amsterdam apartment video with the pull-out stairs that he mentions, and I was equally impressed. He did an excellent mini version of those stairs.
So many things to like about his design...

Now this is how the whole tiny house process should work. I've been waiting to see more of these. Buy ur own land cuz the trailer park lots charge fees just like HOA, and if the owner sells it then the new owners can kick ur azzes out. Buy a piece of land. Park for free. Get solar, do everything this this amazing guy is doing. I'm so impressed. He appears to have thought of everything. Next he'll have greenhouse, and smoker shed to dry meat and food, canning and he's ready!!! I love it. I'd like this set up too

If I am lucky to purchase a lot of land, I'll construct a house like this, but in a simple colonial style like those in my home nation of Trinidad 🇹🇹
Why live in a mansion with too many rooms I might never use when I can have a simple abode?
