  • This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Independence Day, released in 1996 and directed by Roland Emmerich. This film was corny, cheesy fun with a solid cast, especially from Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Will Smith, Judd Hirsch and Randy Quaid. Alien invasion, extermination, explosions galore, and some memorable quotes from these characters. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching!

What will really blow your mind...
The Wright Brothers first flew on December 17th, 1903. As the movie displayed, the Apollo crew landed on the moon on July 20th, 1969.
That means, humankind went from no powered flight of any sort, essentially being completely ground-bound...to leaving our world and landing on another, in just 66 years. A child that might've gotten to see the Wright brothers' first flight, could've watched with their grandchildren as Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon. We got that far, in a single generation.
That's the technological equivalent of an infant running and winning an Olympic Decathlon the day after they learn to walk.
That was six decades ago. Look how little we've accomplished since then, by comparison. Same amount of time, and all we've really managed now is a barely functional internet that's slowly killing our species.

Don't feel bad about the jump scare with Dr. Oaken in the lab. People who've seen this movie a hundred times and KNOW unequivocally the EXACT moment it happens...still get got by that one. One of the best jump-scares in cinema. Those are always the best...the ones you know are coming, but are still so sudden, in a moment of such otherwise total inactivity, that you still fall for it.

Nice reaction, I do want to say that the reason this movie is so long is this was the peak of AAA when it came out in theaters, peak level graphics and 3d animation. The scene where the ship shoots the beam down and destroys the building, along with the fire raging down the public street, this was the first time such things were shown on screen.
In my opinion, the main reason you could predict everything is because you are living in a post Avengers movies world, or in other words you are already desensitized to this kind of mass destruction being shown on film, yet in 1996 this was cutting edge as hell especially if you saw this in Imax.

Didn't get to see this in the theaters, so when it came out on home video I picked up a tape & took it back my barracks room to watch it. I was active duty Army at the time, stationed in the middle of nowhere, California desert. Had the room to myself, so I was just parked on my bunk watching it...got to 14:37 and, at the _exact_ moment that Air Force One was taking off & barely outrunning the massive fireball, all of the power on the entire base went out. It had never happened before, it never happened again in the time I was there. Just a wee bit freaky. 😂😂😂

Fun fact -- there's a Special Edition of this movie that's actually 9 minutes *longer* than this one. Main thing it adds is stuff where Russell Case's younger son needs medication, which makes their financial situation more dire, as well as a subplot where the daughter has a dorky boyfriend.
Not only did this skyrocket Will Smith to stardom and make a huge mark as one of the biggest blockbusters of the '90s, it also launched director Roland Emmerich into the big time. He has gone onto make other disaster movies similar to this one like The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, and the recent Moonfall, as well as the widely-hated 1998 American Godzilla movie. I can't say I really recommend any of these, as they're like this but even dumber. Emmerich also returned for 2016's Independence Day: Resurgence, along with many of this film's cast members, although in the unlikely event that you watch that movie, I will let you discover for yourself who else returns and who doesn't (I bet at least some people on both sides of that will really surprise you). As I said on Patreon when you posted the full watch-along, I liked many of the ideas that went into that movie and was interested to see what they would do with the third film, but then the second film bombed and they never made the trilogy-capper they had in mind.
One of my favorite films of the '90s (which he may have even done directly after this one) stars Bill Pullman. It is, as is usually the case with me, a forgotten gem. I'll have to put that one on the list of possibilities should I be lucky enough to win the Member of the Month pick.

My favourite astronomical thing is speed related. The fastest man-made object ever is one of the probes that is orbiting the sun taking readings; it reached 163 km/s at perihelion in 2021, though it's expected to break that record later this year. At that speed, assuming it could be maintained, it would take 77,609 YEARS to reach the Centauri star system. Really puts interstellar sizes into perspective.
@7:40 It wouldn't be a total eclipse since the blocking object is so much closer to the ground, so lots of light is leaking in from the sides. With eclipses, the blocking object is preventing a very wide angle of light from hitting the surface of the planet.
@9:45: The whole fight or flight instinct idea has been completely disproved psychologically. It's simply not a human response pattern, though some other animals have it. A good example of why this isn't a human thing is that women typically react to danger differently than men.
@29:25: Everyone makes fun of the computer virus subplot. In a deleted scene it was explained that the computer revolution happened because of reverse-engineered alien technology. David's virus worked because he was using an Apple laptop and Apple chips are closer to the original tech. Still over-the-top, but at least it's marginally plausible.

It is the alien's original use of the satellites that allowed the hacking to be able to travel both ways. The aliens were using earthling tech to communicate with each other so it was them who deciphered the coding language barrier that David found so it was easy to utilize the backdoor access for humanity's retaliation.
This movie is quite old now and you're definitely spoiled for choice due to later movies that came after this and so you are too young to appreciate this for what was when it came out and also the generational deterioration of attention span means that you just can't handle longform art that people in the 80's and 90s are used to (there is a standard non-extended edition that may be better for the younger generation and the TV cut is even shorter). This movie is a great 4th of July movie that most all Americans put on or tune into on TV.

      "Yes!"
      "How long does this take?"

Considering he was directly under the center of the ship, ejection would’ve prolonged his life by maybe 2 seconds. The incredible explosion caused by the his jet hitting the firing element would’ve cooked him midair, and if that didn’t do it, he and the entire city would’ve been crushed by the crashing ship. There is absolutely zero chance of survival by ejection.

So glad that you are reviewing the film Alien. Its sequel to the first is that which T-2 is to The Terminator. So atleast I know you will be happy with the future reviews that you will soon record. Yeah this movie was just a great big popcorn all-star cast kind of flick that ruled the box office in the mid 90's. It's just a fun watch and a staple shown on our cable/satellite every 4th of July. Lol. I'm glad you got a kick out of it. Great review!

Not even 20 seconds in and already liked the video... LOVE me some Jinjer!
edit: Had to really think about it while watching this; I think the space-related accomplishment I like most is when the Voyager probes used gravitational slingshots to visit up-close all of the major outer planets, but that is in large part due to serendipitous positioning of those planets and some excellent math skills. It's not the most impressive thing we've done, but I like it a lot. An honorable mention would be how early we were able to measure the distance of a lot of stars using parallax. As to this movie... the fire tsunami blew my mind in the theaters. Regular tsunamis freak me the f#

Most unrealistic part of the movie: Russel almost launching a missile from a jet while on the ground. The weight-on-wheels switch would never allow a missile to fire or even the chain gun to be fired. It’s impossible. And a missile wouldn’t “spool up” like you heard in the movie, it would be instantaneous. An easy oversight for movie makers who are not aware of such failsafes, but as a former USAF F-16 flight line guy, it makes me laugh😂

It's a comfort to know that at this moment, a Millenial is hard at work on the 21st century's first $ 3B earning, 15 minute, cinematic masterpiece entirely filmed on an iPhone 23, using special FX techniques that aren't going to be invented for another 30 years. But hey, back in the 90s we were working with stone and chisel. The older generations appreciate the strength of character required to suffer through our clumsy attempts at entertainment.
