«Shchedryk" is an ancient Ukrainian ritual song. which was sung during winter holidays and waiting for spring. this song was arranged for choir by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych! In October 1921, the Ukrainian National Choir, under the direction of Oleksandr Koshits, performed "Shchedryk" at Carnegie Hall, winning the hearts of the local audience. Then, the American composer of Ukrainian origin, Peter Wilhousky, wrote a new text in English. Thus, the traditional schedrivka turned into a Christmas song. The melody reminded him of the festive chimes, which prompted him to the main idea and determined the choice of the name Carol of the Bells.
