Rhe guitarist was interacting with the crowd. He always is. I was standing a few meters in front of him. Sound guy was at the other side of the stage 😉 Enjoy the journey with Epica. You won’t be disappointed

Welcome to EPICA. They are a Dutch symphonic metal band , formed in 2002 by guitarist and primary harsh vocalist, Mark Jansen, after parting ways with his former band After Forever. Lead singer is Simone Simons, she was 17 in 2002. She was in training for pop singing, she switched to this style after hearing Tarja with Nightwish. Mark had co -founded After Forever, which was the first band Floor joined at age 16 .(Mark and Floor are not related). Coen Janssen on keys is the other original member left. Current lineup has been constant since 2012, with Isaac Delahaye on lead guitar, Rob van der Loo on bass, and drummer Arien van Weesenbeek.
Yes, the keyboard is mobile, sometimes on a track or sometimes on wheels. And it spins. It's wireless, powered by laptop batteries mounted under the keyboard.
This song is one of their heavier ones, title track to the 2005 2nd album. Often used as the set closer, as is the case here in 2017, it is still played today. Several EP's and 8 full albums to date, I believe they will be starting work on album #9 later this year. Some songs are this heavy, some not as heavy, and some beautiful ballads.
The 'adorable' part was a piece of the French national anthem, for the French crowd.
Near the end, Rob the bassist, wasn't talking to anyone, he was singing along with the song, singing towards the crowd.
As you see, they are awesome live. More to check out "The Skeleton Key" and "Kingdom of Heaven Part 3" , both from the 2021 Omega Alive virtual show. "Code of Life" and the ballad "Rivers" feat Apocalyptica, from 2023 in Amsterdam, at AFAS Live. "Design Your Universe" and "Sancta Terra" feat Floor, at the Retrospect 2013 1oth anniversary concert.

I'm glad that you have finally come to Epica. One of the best bands out there. Simone's voice is flawless, the musicianship is tight as can be. The thing that impresses me the most is the fact that, in spite of the fact that I am not a fan of growling, Mark has it down to such a science that I really enjoy it.

Welcome to Epica, the coolest band in the world!!! There’s so much to enjoy with them-they are just the epitome of symphonic metal (imo) and absolutely my favorite band to see live because of their energy and chemistry. They’re always running around stage, singing along to the lyrics, and playing with each other!
As a sound tech, you’ll probably really appreciate their Retrospect concert, which had a live choir and orchestra joining them on stage! Highly recommend Unleashed from that one. There’s also Omega Alive, which was a live-streamed online concert they did during covid lockdowns-from that I recommend Victims of Contingency, which will let you see Coen’s *other* cool keyboard but also as a tech maybe make you freak out (though I’m not gonna spoil why LOL). Last one I’ll also recommend is Rivers from Live at the AFAS Live, which also has a special live orchestral accompaniment from metal cello quartet Apocalyptica!

Coen on keys is quite a character. Arien van Weesenbeek on drums has been hitting things since he was 3yo, according to his parents, - he did find his dad's drum-kit before he wrecked the furniture! Mark Jansen is off the scale cool too! Mark (and Floor), in their first band, did a lot roadie and tech work so they know what to do! Awesome EPICA - epic reaction! LOL! (but true!)

I love it how you pick up on certain details even while you're engrossed in the sound tech setup. Like how you caught Simone hopping like a little schoolgirl, back to her centre stage spot after her exchange with Coen on keys. Adorable indeed. And the drummer.. Like you indicate at 9:00 "just effortless". Yup!
If my double kick footwork were as impeccable as Ariën van Weesenbeek's, then maybe I'd be able to do that casual and gorgeously syncopated 4/4 groove as well. Went to see them last summer at the Summer Breeze Open Air fest in Germany and they sound absolutely incredible live. You'd need a whole day just to recover from geeking out abt the on stage mixing, haha.
Nice that you mention Ayreon as well (Arjen commented on your reaction, did he?) cuz that's where all of the greats in the melodic/prog metal universe come together for an amazing flight in space. Enjoy all of these epic rides and many will join you. Cheers from Amsterdam! 🤘

The keyboard is on a turntable that rotates 360 degrees and the turntable is connected to a track that runs around the back of the drum kit so he can move from one side of the stage to the other. He had to get the band’s techs to come up with a power solution based on a laptop battery because there was no keyboard on the market with wireless power.
If you want to see fantastic stage setups, take a look at their Omega Alive show which was a lvie stream during lockdown and also their show at the AFAS Live in Amsterdam.
From Omega Alive I suggest Unchain Utopia for a shorter song or the epic, 13 minute long Kingdom of Heaven part 3. From AFAS Live, Unleashed or Code of Life.
    Enjoy your Epica journey.

As to symphonic metal Epica has stayed true to the roots for 20 years and is symphonic metal done right! There are many very good symphonic metal bands out there mostly from Europe a couple that I know of from America. Really enjoy the likes of many such as Delain, visions of Atlantis, Therion, Nightwish, within temptation, and the great Dimmu Borgir… Thankful to all of them for being my gateway up to the so incredible greatness that is known as EPICA! 🤘🏻🤘🏻 Looking forward to going the journey with you!

You say a couple of times that it seems like Isaac (lead guitar) and Rob (bass) are talking to engineers. From having attended several Epica concerts, I find it's more likely they are engaging the fans at the front of the crowd. They often look people in the eyes and sing or growl along to the lyrics unmiked with the fans. Isaac pointing to his guitar at one point is also crowd engagement, as he then slides his fingers to that position from the top of the neck.

Ginx I have have some Wintersun requests to start you off on a wintersun rabbit hole. First start off with wintersun sons of winter and stars 1.5 lyric music video specifically this version because it showcases the bands audio engineer on how well he mixes the vocals and instruments so well. A bit of technical fact for you this video has 200 backing tracks for only this one song! It's true look up wintersuns band history and you'll learn the first album took 12 years to produce because of so many backing tracks they use! But on to the next suggestion is wintersun time live rehearsal video recorded at Sonic pump studios in Finland. Then follow up with wintersun land of snow and sorrow live rehearsal video at Sonic pump. After that one would be wintersun loneliness music lyric video. Next is wintersun warning music video featuring the lead singer jari showing off his brand new guitar. I guarantee will be totally geeking out every minute due to the technical aspects and audio engineering this band has to offer due to the genius or madness as some have described the lead singer jari skilled in creating his bands music. So ginx we want you to join the wintersun viking symphonic metal army! Thank you ❤️

Consign to Oblivion has long been their "closer" live... for excellent reasons. I'm happy for you to get a glimpse at this group's work. They weren't talking to the engineers. The first moment you pointed out, the lyrics talked about "heaven's gate" so Coen (the keyboardist) was interacting with another band member and pointing towards the sky. And the second moment, Issac, the main guitarist was just singing along with the audience.
It is still very interesting to watch the reaction of a pro from the music industry. As an audio engineer, you should check out any of the songs they've done with a live orchestra (anything from the Retrospect concert). Those engineers deserve all the props in the world.

Welcome to Epica! Wait until you see them with a choir and orchestra on stage, for the real symphonic metal flavour. There is another Dutch symphonic metal band called Within Temptation, who also performs with a choir and orchestra, but you'll get to them later, as there are links to Anneke Van Giersbergen who collabs a lot with Arjen Lucassen, and "Paradise" is a song with Tarja, the 1st Nightwish singer. The Dutch ladies are connected throughout the whole metal scene ;-)

If she likes it heavier or darker or the pristine perfect pitch of Simone‘s archangel voice, Nightwish won’t thrill as much anymore. Nightwish had a big hole blown to their side and lost a lot of steam after the Viking Marco left. So much steam is gone as matter of fact they’re just sitting around now composing only for almost a year and not out with fans performing and who knows when and if they will ever tour again

    Face hurt?
My face always hurts after listening to Epica... too much smiling, I guess. That's not a metal thing, but oh how I love the music and fun they create.
From what I can see, the band has small scripted areas for 'interaction' between each other and/or the crowd.
Epica seems to thrive on making eye contact with the crowd and shouting out mosh-encouragements to their fans.
RE the precise setup on stage : with that wonderful pyro-show, I would be they have to keep everything well-dressed, running audio cable, pyro, and lighting bundles separate to prevent cross-triggering of the pyro at exactly the wrong moment (it's easy to get crosstalk going in long parallel bundles if they travel too close together over a long distance and are not separately shielded.
... sorry, former EE here... I worked on radiated/conducted noise problems, as well as helped develop/test code that simulated noise artifacts on routed circuit boards.. but I digress)
Anyway, you prevent accidents by handling the cables and their signals with the utmost respect and care. A lifted ground on the WRONG cable could cause an accident firing. BUT a lifted ground on a stereo feed to a pair of amps couple help prevent ground-loop noise (you know this stuff... but the readers might not) so it's crucial to be as professional with the stage setup as it is for the musicians to play all the right notes.
... ok, enough nerding out... .STFU, Randy
I'm so happy you've finally found Epica.
You might consider a song or two from their Omega Live "shutdown concert" They use a fairly elaborate set, play perfectly, have remarkable sound engineering and even indulge the viewers with physical performers (I won't spoil the surprises) and a flaming piano or two, if you happen upon the right song.
    Have fun !!

I absolutely love Dream Theater! I have seen them live a few times and had the honor of meeting Jordan Rudess when he was at a festival (GearFest at Sweetwater Pro Audio), very awesome human

@@ginxreacts That's awesome! I've never had the chance to see them live. Haven't seen Epica yet either. I did manage to see Nightwish in 2018 in Albany, NY. Incredible show! Their performances really are perfect!

"My small country boast with talented female singer metal bands. Blackbriar has many amazing songs. Try also Delain, The Gathering and Within Temptation."
