MOT testers seem to have their own quirks and menstrual cycles. What one garage will pass another will not. You're in the hands of the gods as to the outcome...... 😊
@@HodgeAutomotive Would use a pry bar to test the flexibility of the bushes on the actually part they are apart of. Ideally they shouldve passed as they look fine from the video. but due to the age of the vehicle its always best to replace perishable parts such as gaskets and bushing. but if it aint broke dont fix it. (Ive had 25 year old suspension pass an MOT and trust me they were well-worn). Some testers are just yobbos. best of luck to yas, merry chirstmas
The joys of starting out motoring and learning about doing your own mechanics...... 😀 Having done some stuff myself over the last 40 years or so I would have used washing up liquid on rubber components as a lubricant in preference to grease or WD40..... I enjoyed the video also the music too which was at the right level as to not intrude on the commentary.... good job.
Thanks for the feedback 👍🏻 ah yeah that’s something to consider, maybe I’ll try washing up liquid in future see what works best. Appreciate feedback on the music volume, I spent more time than I care to say trying to get it right haha 😂
You'd be in trouble if it's a green car, buddy. Better to go with white and text explaining the color correctly so the MOT guy can understand its purpose. Better to use the correct color of the car on the pen.
Just started watching your videos Chris, I like your nice relaxed style and power to you for doing it yourself. I would rather do stuff on my cars as well mainly because there are so many cowboys out there who think they are mechanics but are clearly not. I find if you are methodical in your process and have some decent tools then you can do most things and you know they are being done right. Keep up the videos Chris you have a good apprentice in Paige...😉
Thanks for the comment Simon, yeah at least if you do it yourself you’ll know it’s been done properly… some of the time in my case 😂 much more videos to come! Haha she’ll be trained up in no time 😂
You can see the play in the bush by standing by the side of the car, get someone to drive it slowly and apply the brakes. You'll see the wheel jump backwards in the arch if the bushes are knackered.
Those lower arm rear bushes are prone for failing however they need to be literally knocking (excessive play) before they fail. Some testers love failing them for minor play. Stick a bar in the rubber bush and give it a wiggle to check for play. Also get someone to slowly drive it forwards and press the brake. If the wheel jumps forward then it def has excessive play. I'm a mot tester so if you need any advice just drop me a message 👍
Yeah didn’t seem like much play to me at the time, I’ll use that in future to test them a bit more before I change them. Rightly or wrongly I just took his word this time 🤷♂️ appreciate the advice mate I’ll probably take you up on that offer! Haha
GunGum, youre suposed to roll that between your fingers until you get a roll of GunGum long enough and join the ends to a circle. Wet fingers makes this easier... then use it like a O-ring or just lay it around the sealing area and tighten to whatever seems appropriate... Gut and tight is probably enough.
In peugeot sedre software it says that movement somewhere above 3mm in the lower arm bushings with the pressure of 20kg , is abnormal... I think its same for VW aswell
They just stuffed it in? I took my other car for an mot the other day, said it needed a fuel filter because it was leaking, then said it was the housing, I said right if it’s the housing I’ll fix it, then when I opened it there was no fuel filter in there?! And they charged me to fit one 😂
I wouldn’t have even changed those bushes, totally fine. Can always take it to a different tester and see what they say. Still, learning to work on your own car will save you thousands across you lifetime, now you know how to do a few jobs.
yeah bit frustrating, we were on a bit of a short timescale and that tester was only round the corner and i wasnt 100% that they were bad or not so i just got on with it in the end, saved a fair bit from doing it myself so wasnt too bad and learnt some stuff along the way
@ also what you have to remember is that bush has to control a ton of car moving and stopping a tiny bit of play with a pry bar is magnifyed massively , when the car is in motion, good luck for the future loved the video
@HodgeAutomotive idk but the fact it's got new pads and the discs looks in a proper state that should have been atleast flagged up on a mot I can see from the vid it's bad
@@HodgeAutomotive even if it's not a fail/advisory they really should be done jus from a safety perspective cus I wouldn't trust them. and it will destroy the pads
Thats good to hear from an actual tester 😂 the car had no advisories from the last mot and had barely done over 2K miles so it seemed a bit weird to me, definitely didn’t look “excessive”
@HodgeAutomotive yeah cant see nuch wear happening in 2k miles, they looked as new when you removed them 🤦♂️ ive had 3 of these polos now and they're great also a fabia and only on one them bushes was knackered and that had 120k miles on it 😆
Met a lady from England who needed a 4 wheel brake job and a tune on her Toyota. She was not my girlfriend. I was a mechanic and she poormouthed me at the bar. I fixed her car properly. 6 mos. later she graduated and GAVE the car to a clown from Iran. I am mentioning no names but I don't do free work for women anymore. I don't drink alcohol anymore either. LOL
With your rust repairs would Entrust the vehicle with Your own personal FAMILY in it, And would your wife Mother of your children TRUST the vehicle to be SAFE ?????????
I’d love to watch these videos but the music is too loud nearly drowning out your voice I’m continually straining to hear you please take this as advice and not a negative 🎉
You need to go to a scrap yard to purchase a secound hand car panel off another vauxwagan car in the scrap yard and bring it home as nd screw it onto your car then there's no more hole in the side of your car then your car will only need certain repairs doing like of the exhaust leek get a new hose for the exhaust that will stop it leaking
You are a tight arse you could of filled it or just change the wing the worse thing you could of done is let your girlfriend take the car for MOT my focus MK1 2004 and I do all the work myself I stick with older cars cant do the technical side I'm not expert mechanic as my nvq was in 97 (old school) and been in the welding trade for 25 years I've got all the tools it's all cheap but I can do everything myself mine only goes in for its MOT nothing else as like you said I don't trust garages and the bills are expensive
We both had a week off work and she wanted to practice, it was a short term solution to get it through the not so she could drive it that week. She dropped the key off because I was waiting outside with the dog.. Will get a new wing at some point.
Those bushes were absolutely fine! why i hate most mot testers, at most should of been an advisory! great video though bud😁 'More supportive clapping'
I find it so weird he put those on it, but didn’t mention the whole bottom of the engine was covered with oil 🤷♂️

@@HodgeAutomotive It's not about what works best TBH oil based products should be kept away from rubber as it tends to perish it. Oil that is.
A pure amateur. Every professional body shop person knows you would use red duct tape for the wing. Rookie mistake.
Great advice, I’ll remember this for my next body repair job.

I didn't expect you to have only 92 subs! Quality video mate
Thanks mate! it’s an exclusive club for these videos
those bushes look fine you can test them by levering against the lower arm and you would see the play
That’s what I thought!

good lad for diy ing it save loads money the bushes looked all ok no play impact gun for christmas xx

to test those lower bushes , its not just about bouncing car up & down its also side to side , jack car up see if you can move wheel side to side
good to know thanks, i did move it around a bit with a prybar but it didnt move much, i'll remember this for the future though

On the sensor should have sprayed some brake cleaner on it and wipe it it helps to get any soot deposits off the end of it 😊
I think i actually did that just didnt get it on camera haha, thanks for the advice
Grease may degrade the lifespan of the rubber Bushing (Petrol based lubes) recommend some sort of silicon based lube
