It's wonderful to see these masterpieces being made available on this platform. As a Latino, the Three Stooges has entertained generations of my family. They proved that comedy at its best transcended any language or cultural barriers. Thanks for making this happen.
That in comedy is called “bait and switch”. They bait you in by getting you to listen to what their saying, you draw a conclusion as to what the person will possibly say, but they switch a word with another one that doesn’t make sense. You expected Larry to say highest grades, but he substitutes the word grades with temperatures … just pure comedy gold.
🤣 I remember watching this at the Alex Theater, and everyone was dying of laughter because of the scene where the stooges realized that the tools were inside of someone.
LOL this short is hilarious! I especially love what the stooges come out of that dam store room on XD! First a triple bike! Then a freakin horse! Who keeps a HORSE in a hospital? LOL and finally there go karts XD! These guys are legends! Been a stooge fan all my life! :)
I love all the stooges shorts, but this one will always hold a special place in my heart. Me and my grandma used to laugh at this one a lot. Miss you Nana 😢
The The scene at 15:00 ALWAYS reminds me of when I was having knee replacement surgery, and, before I was put under, I saw a table full of shiny surgical instruments. I asked, "Are all these for me?" I never got an answer from either the surgeon or nurse that were nearby, but, I remember that they both laughed.😂😂😂😂 The surgery,by the way, was successful.❤❤❤😊😊😊
I have the same dvd as well as the others, as I find the shorts that were colorized look great. Since Playing The Ponies is my favorite Three Stooges short, I'm really glad it's among the 20 shorts that were colorized.
In my opinion - and clearly many others - this is the GOAT Stooges short. Every line, every shot, every action is for comedy and it nails it every time. 🤣🤣🤣
Curly Howard's famous exclamation "Woo-woo-woo-woo" was used when he forgot his lines, and soon became the actor's running gag. The third Columbia short for The Three Stooges and their only one to be nominated for an Academy Award. They lost to La Cucaracha (1934). Gene Simmons has said that the "Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard" announcement inspired him to write the KISS song "Calling Dr. Love". The Three Stooges were cut by flying glass in one of the scenes where the glass door slams. The film was refused a British cinema certificate in 1934. The bizarre medical terminology used by The Three Stooges was ad-libbed. The film contains the first appearance of many gags The Three Stooges would use in later shorts. For instance, this is the first of several Stooge shorts in which one of the three Stooges charges into or out of an office with a door that has a large plate-glass window, slamming the door behind them and causing the plate glass in the door to shatter. It is also the first of many shorts where the Stooges make a liquid concoction of something (in this case, medicine) by randomly pouring together various liquids with gibberish names (a similar gag is sometimes used where the Stooges pass each other various tools with nonsensical names while operating). The Stooges have several off-the-wall dialogues with nurses, particularly the "hiccuping nurse", who affects a girlish Betty Boop-like voice. As well, this is the first short that shows the Stooges repeatedly engaging in a huddle while planning something out. A colorized version of this film was released in 2004. It was part of the DVD collection Goofs on the Loose. The hospital shown was the old Cedars of Lebanon, which treated many a Hollywood celebrity and starred in numerous films in its day. Located on Fountain Avenue, the building now belongs to the Church of Scientology but still looks much the same. Decades later, Columbia Pictures reutilized the title of this short for an unrelated feature film- the much-beloved Men in Black (1997), starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. The patient Anna Conda is a play on the anaconda reptile, native to South America. Although there are wild green canaries, the bird seen is a parrot. Besides "Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard", there are 13 other doctors listed on the "Loud Speaker Call" board: Dr. King, Dr. Lynch, Dr. Davis, Dr. Spinks, Dr. Burton, Dr. Graves, Dr. Boyd, Dr. James, Dr. Scott, Dr. Brown, Dr. Savage, Dr. Green, and Dr. Carew. This represents an early use of what has come to be described as hammerspace. The Stooges go to the storage closet to acquire modes of transportation to get them to their patients. They are seen riding a three-man bicycle, a horse, and then individual go-carts out of the closet. These items would not likely fit in the storage closet's space. The Western Union Messenger states the message from Nell is "75 cents collect". After Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, and Dr. Howard extract the information from the messenger and he asks for his, money, they say they'll "toss him for it; double or nothing" and ask him for a coin, which he provides. However, after the boys scam him on the toss, they walk away with his coin, thus negating both the "double" and the "nothing".
Boyyyyy when I was younger I used to love to watch the three stopped every Saturday mornings I mean they were so very funny if u wanted a good laugh just watch these three.

Happy Belated 90th Birthday "Men in Black!" It's my dad's favorite Three Stooges short. I've always liked this short, but I have enjoyed it more recently because their energy is similar to that of the Marx Brothers. It's zany, joyful, and deliberately chaotic. This is especially true during their first interaction with the high-voiced nurse, which could have been a Groucho/Chico scene, and 8:29-8:42. While I'm glad that this short got an Oscar nominated, there are others that deserve one too like "Disorder in the Court," "Micro-Phonies," "Brideless Groom," and "Punchy Cowpunchers." One final thing, Dr. Graves is the biggest idiot in a Three Stooges short outside the stooges themselves. He decided to let those three graduate medical school not because they demonstrated proficiency in practicing medicine, but they were in the senior class for "too many years." Also, let's not forget he swallowed a note. He deserved the stooges performing surgery on him.
It's strange that Men In Black was the only Three Stooges short to be nominated for an Academy Award, but it does make for a fun short. To be honest, I'm probably not as high on this short as others might be, as it's pretty light on story for a lot of it, but there are still enjoyable gags, such as the constant glass destruction and the multiple transportation modes the trio takes. Things do really pick up for me in the second half with the surgery attempt, and the ending is such a fun way to conclude the short. It's a good one, just not a particular favorite of mine. Where it ranks for me: #63
"What are you gonna do for the patient in Room 22?" "Nothin'...what did he ever do for us?" They say that The Stooges were low brow humor. OK...but they were still hysterically funny, particularly before Curly started having health problems.
In some celebrity families, the wealth can transcend one or more generations. Some who are grandchildren or great grandchildren may have a life of ease and abundance, based on the efforts of a relative they might not have ever known. I'd wondered if perhaps this might be true for the Stooges. It seems not, based on this CBS article I just found, while looking to answer to my own question. *"After splitting from Healy, the Three Stooges signed on to Columbia Pictures where they appeared in nearly 200 shorts between 1933 and 1959. Their only short to be nominated for an Academy Award was 'Men in Black' (1934) - a parody of the Clark Gable-Myrna Loy 'Men in White' - which finds the Three Stooges as medical students (and not very good ones at that).* *The comedy team proved to be extremely popular, but the Stooges never got rich. They made about 8 films a year, but were paid a flat fee (no royalties) of $60,000 - to be divided by the three. The studio head managed to renew the terms of their contract for 23 years, in which time the Stooges never got a raise. Meanwhile, their shorts - the most popular of the studio's output - made Columbia millions."*
The Three Stooges mention penicillin in the short titled “Men in Black” (1934). This short is a parody of the hospital drama genre, and the Stooges play inept doctors who cause chaos in a hospital. The mention of penicillin is notable because it predates the widespread use of the antibiotic, which became common in the 1940s.???
