I left Belfast in 1965, aged 23 for Australia. I never ever got back to see it again but I have the memories of my young life there.

Not many entertainers wanted to come to Belfast, couldn’t really blame them. However Joe Dolan and The Drifters came up regularly and they had faithful fans from both sides of the divide. His shows were brilliant and just for a few hours helped us to forget the daily horrors and atrocities. Rest in Peace Joe. ❤

Umm, close one, let's compare. Now...Waterfront Hall, Odyssey Arena with a Champion Ice Hockey team playing to a packed crowd every home game in between fantastic proper arena shows, Titanic Belfast's award winning attraction, the revamped Opera House staging west end touring productions, Waterfront hall being a staple for most touring comedians, Victoria Square shopping centre, countless modern hotels, restaurants, bars and a busy city centre at the weekend. Compared to the splendour of 1974 and it's bombed out buildings, bombed out Opera House that no west end show would visit, bombed out Europa hotel as the only hotel left, concerts at the Kings Hall, woefully equipped for the few who were willing to play Belfast, the city centre and it's ring of steel, which virtually left the city as a ghost town by 5.30pm every night. Yeah, yer right, a shadow of how great it was in 1974. Like London in 1942 was so much more fun than it is now.

I was a student in Belfast around that time, from a rural Western Co so found it quite scary though my aunt had a shop near the Royal so I at least had someone there.
