I love the game but have been disappointed how much they nerfed it with some of the QoL changes since launch. Really feels like they caved to the lowest common denominator. So much of the game no longer feels like you have to work for anything, or feels earned. The most egregious was the change to let you play through with any character the first time you play a new level. Absolutely undermines the designed flow of gameplay, exploration, replay and puzzle design. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some small changes that have made some real improvements, but the broad sweeping ones have made some drastic, diminishing changes between my first play through at launch and now. However, on a lighter note some of those variants are cool af. All of The Thing should have gotten the Ice variant. And they need to release all of The Thing characters as real Pops. Blair Monster, Spiderhead and Mac ready look awesome on my shelf. If nothing else release The Norwegian and the messed up Huskys 😊

The game was extremely overtuned from the start and I don't think people pointing that out are "the lowest common denominator." I personally would not have made the changes the way they did. I think there were ways to do it so the people that enjoyed the challenge still got it. It's clear though by your obvious love of The Thing that you are more into that style and that's great, but that was my absolute least favorite part of the game personally.
At the end of the day, the game needed to be more accessible and I think they're doing their best to find that balance. I always advocated for finding a way to incorporate something like red bricks in the LEGO games that acted as cheats to just make the game easier for those that wanted it, but it is what it is.
I just want the game to be successful and I think they are trying really hard to make everyone happy and that is always a tough balance.
The ice variants are amazing for sure. I don't know if I love each theme getting different options or if like you suggested, all of the Thing should have got one and all of MOTU got another. Ice and Jade were super cool.

@@JayShockblast I totally agree with you that at launch there were many problems with tune/balance. Unquestionably. Some that I don't know how they possibly made it through QA without it coming up; like taking hits/interrupts while drinking a soda or using machines. That feels like that should be 101. Stamina was also an issue. All were addressed in Update 1 and rightly so.
But 10 days after launch they dropped the requirements needed to unlock worlds as to be almost inconsequential. As I said they broke the intended flow of gameplay, exploration, replay etc. through the "play any character from the start" change. After 10 days? I believe that broad stroke was aimed at the lowest common denominator, not fixing things that were obviously out of whack. Those who vocally didn't want to play the game as it was designed and go through a paced progression system that really wasn't asking that much. So many were annoyed that they couldn't play the game with the character they wanted, right off the bat, with little interest in the franchises the devs clearly love and adapted. Some of it is bloody genius. A lot seemed to just want to run around somewhere, anywhere, with FNaF characters and break things. And 10/10 bent to that less than 2 weeks after launch. I have a lot more thoughts on how that change alone fundamentally changed design intentions, and I think it probably hurt 10/10 to make, but I'll leave it.
They needed to do something to keep existing players and attract more, but some of these big changes out of the gate felt like they panicked. The balancing and encounter tuning etc would have greatly eased players' friction and progression by making it a hell of a lot more forgiving in that first update. Though, I still feel the final encounter is a slog that loses its appeal and begins to outstay its welcome.
I'm all for making games as accessible to as many players as possible and I'm not trying to say the game should be tough as nails and you either get gud or don't play it. Not for that in games at all, but besting well-crafted/scaled challenges brings such satisfaction and engagement. On the topic of Red Lego bricks, the thing was though that you had to find them. The cheat menu wasn't given to you upfront with everything unlocked, they were earned through exploration. Finding them became a thing on its own, and satisfying when you unlocked those cheats.
The game didn't land the way they were expecting, and that is a damn shame. It seems like they were very much geared to roll into the next one as LinkedIn profiles indicate games, plural. I really hope we get more.
As for The Thing, I just love that movie and it was cool seeing it reimagined. But, the world showcases so many of the weakest aspects of FF, which hurts my heart. It was the world I chose first, but had waaaaaaay more fun in the other worlds, even in franchises I had no previous investment. I started watching Umbrella Academy because of FF. The first time I heard the "By the Power of Grayskull" sample I was bowled over by my childhood and my eyes welled up. I just love The Thing outside of FF. It was the world they started development with and spent 6 months working on, almost proof of concept. It feels like they learned things designing the other worlds and should have revisited aspects of The Thing levels/puzzles.
As for the new variants? I think a style that fit the theme across the board as one, with additional one(s) per character that accentuates the sculpt or nature of the character. I think the sketch look for the He-Man ones would look really cool, but then ones like the one Skeletor got that just makes all his detail pop (no pun intended). He looks incredible.
I think it's a damn fine game, but has suffered some post-launch knee-jerk reactions which I believe have hurt it for new players.

I'll say this, I know they are doing the best they can to take all the feedback and try to incorporate it back into the game. I was on a conference call with Arthur Parsons just after the game released giving feedback (along with RuggedEagle and QuickBrickGames) and believe me, they are trying. Even though Arthur and several others started 10:10 after leaving TT Games, the studio is full of people where FF is their first game. That's definitely making excuses for them and I will willingly admit I am doing it here, but in the end I know they are doing the best they can to make the game the best they can.

@@JayShockblast It has honestly never been a doubt in my mind that they are trying. I've been following FF development since Jon Burton posted the teaser trailer on his awesome Coding Secrets UA-cam channel back in April last year and have been advocating for it since then to anyone who would listen. I've been a dev myself for longer than I care to remember (not games until recently), and I'm just finishing a bachelor's degree in game design. I've been analyzing games to see what makes them tick for almost the last 3 years now, and I guess it is why the fundamental changes have registered the way that they have. But that hasn't determined my current opinions on it, just helped me process them. I've had a personal investment in following the development of the game as all but TUA franchise, main and the cameos, really mean something to me. It feels like they abandoned some core pillars they spent years building upon very quickly when a more metered approach could have worked towards a balanced middle ground without those sacrifices.
Not launching with co-op hurt it too, but they made the right call if it wasn't stable. I don't think there would be any coming back from that. 10:10 have had a tough time of it and I really do feel for them. As you pointed out for many of the team this is their first game and some of the launch reception must have been incredibly disheartening.
I never took any of this exchange as you making excuses for them, I don't think they need them. There are Studios that could learn a lot from the transparency Arthur Parsons has displayed as to the issues FF has faced since launch and their commitment to improving the game. It was never my intention to just shit all over the studio, so if that's the way any of this has come across that's on me. I just have opinions on some of their decisions, the timeframes in which they were made and ultimately whether they make a significant impact on future player uptake.
