🌹पंचदशी is one of the most important texts and a must for the students of Vedanta. 🌹It is highly respected in the corridors of Vedantic discussion, and the congregation of the saints, due to its unique presentation of Vedantic principles. 🌹Usually, the ideas of Vedanta may be scattered across different texts. 🌹But the rule of पंचदशी is that श्री विद्यारण्य has collected all the ideas, given them chronology, organized them systematically, and placed it simply for students. 🌹There is an observation of ideas and then classification of them into three sections or प्रकरण: विवेक प्रकरण(1st to 5th Chapter), दीप प्रकरण (6th to 10th Chapter), and आनंद प्रकरण (11th to 15th Chapter). 🌹Secondly, the text follows a question-answer pattern, which is better for students to grasp. 🌹The third virtue of पंचदशी is that each chapter is complete by itself - any chapter can be studied independently. 🌹Another aspect about पंचदशी is that some mantras of the Upanishads are picked by श्री विद्यारण्य, and his genius is seen as he is able to write more than 300 verses of explanation on a mantra. 🌹विद्यारण्य स्वामी, the author of पंचदशी, is as important to Andhra Pradesh, as is Samarth Guru Ram Das in Maharashtra. 🌹His father was मायणा and his mother's name was श्रीमती, and both his parents were very illustrious. They had three sons, and all were extremely great. 🌹विद्यारण्य स्वामी, one of the three sons, had once propitiated देवी गायत्री for money, but by the time she appeared, विद्यारण्य स्वामी did not have any desire for money, and he asked for that wealth which never diminishes - and then देवी गायत्री gave him Self-knowledge. 🌹In time of heavy Islamic conquest, विद्यारण्य स्वामी had established the great विजयनगर empire and also propitiated Devi to ask for the longevity of the kingdom. 🌹Many great discussions on the scriptures took place in this empire while it lasted. 🌹विद्यारण्य स्वामी went in search of his younger brother, भोगनाथ, who became Bharati Teertha by taking sannyasa at Sringeri, and his younger brother eventually became his teacher. 🌹Thus, विद्यारण्य स्वामी had three great Gurus - Bharati Teertha, Vidya Teertha, and Shrikantha. 🌹These three great minds acted on his mind and molded him. 🌹विद्यारण्य स्वामी wrote many great texts after that, becoming a spiritual giant of his times. He was known as 'सर्वज्ञो वै विद्यारण्य' - that he is omniscient. 🌹Amidst his prolific writing, one was his commentary on the Vedas, for which भगवान Veda Vyasa gave him darshan when he went to Varanasi. Such is the glory of the motherland we belong to. 🌹पंचदशी is a प्रकरण- ग्रन्थ. प्रकरण means, 'शास्त्रैक देश संबद्धः' - associated with a specific part of the scriptures. 🌹There are three styles of speaking : प्रतिबिम्बवाद, दृष्टि -सृष्टि वाद, and अवक्षेदा वादा . प्रतिबिम्बवाद is the style of विद्यारण्य स्वामी. 🌹While the ideas and concepts of पंचदशी are all in the Upanishads and Gita, it is the presentation of it by विद्यारण्य स्वामी which is very striking and helpful for contemplation. 🌹In the first chapter of पंचदशी (तत्व विवेक), the first two verses are मङ्गलाचरण, invoking the grace of God and Guru. 🌹Obstacles can come from unseen sources, hence the grace of the Guru is necessary. 🌹In Verse 1, विद्यारण्य स्वामी salutes his sannyasa Guru, शंकरानन्द , and God, because Guru and ईश्वर both are included in the word शंकरा. 🌹The purpose of मङ्गलाचरण is to say that , 'I surrender myself and my work to the Guru'. 🌹This is the foundation of anyone's spiritual life - humility, obedience, Guru-bhakti, ईश्वर-bhakti, and austerity. Without these, however learned we may be, we eventually crack at some point. 🌹If the quantity of Guru or ईश्वर Bhakti, or humility and obedience, is less then such a person cannot go far on this path. 🌹If the quantity is very sufficient, then even a dull student will become brilliant in due time. 🌹Where we unite the 'from' and the 'for', acknowledging that all we have is from Guru and God, and all we do will be for Guru and God, this is the manifestation of नमः or surrender. 🌹It is the teacher who places gems of right ideas, thoughts, and knowledge in the disciple, and removes the weeds of anger, attachment, ego etc. 🌹There are not only good elements in कर्मफल or our fruits of action, however righteous we may be. There will definitely be unpleasantries coming our way. 🌹The holder and possessor of all fruits of actions is the जीव भाव , which is very affected by it. 🌹It is the spiritual seeker who feels the need to know that by which they can grow over and move beyond one fruit of action to the next. 🌹When this inner urgency grows in the student, the teacher asks, "May I Help?" - He is the form and grace of God, come for us. 🌹The teacher has the sole task to destroy the crocodile extreme delusion and it's effects, in the life of the disciple. 🌹It is a crocodile because when it grabs our leg, we cannot move out of it, and secondly because this delusion brings us unbearable pain. 🌹Without gratitude, there can be no knowledge. Vidya is fond only of they who do practice, austerity, and who have devotion unto Guru and God. Without the grace of God, a Guru will not come to us. 🌹Without the Guru, what can be known spontaneously will take days to understand. 🌹The mind is purified by serving the teacher. Serving means that we touch our thought with the teacher's thought, taking in the the thought of the teacher for us. 🌹It is such that the software is us is of the teacher's thought, devotion, and desire, and only the hardware of the body is ours. 🌹Having dropped my ego, desire, insistence, attachment, I then strive to make the desire happen. This is सेवा. 🌹The essence of सेवा is to not keep our own ideals, thoughts, and desire. 🌹Ego means that we fail to drop our own personalities, style, attachment, etc. सेवा means I drop all of it, and empty myself fully for the Guru to fill Himself in us. 🌹Anybody can talk of Vedanta and study it. But few can be fully surrendered before the Guru. 🌹This is a path to dissolve, to forget our-self, to obliterate our ego, and make ourselves invisible. 🌹Any goodness in us that remains un-offered to God will become a poison for our personality. 🌹सेवा means that we cultivate such soft thoughts and high surrender in us, that the Guru can enjoy us and our thoughts. 🌹The surrender and devotion unto Guru and God in Verses 1 and 2 alone shall prepare us for divine straight into Self-knowledge in Verse 3.
