Why Buses Open Doors on Railroad Tracks
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- Before it became law, school buses didn’t have to open their doors at railroads. Sure, they stopped to check for an oncoming train. But when visibility is low, say, in fog or during a snowstorm, that method can prove dangerously ineffective.
Everything changed in the 1930s, but the situation still wasn’t ideal. Originally, a student was assigned as a “lookout” during each ride. They’d get off the bus once it stopped and look both ways down the railroad crossing. This continued until it was decided that it was too big a responsibility put on these young volunteers’ shoulders.

SUMMARY:
It all comes down to safety and lessons learned. By opening the door AND their side window, a bus driver is better able to hear if a train is coming.
Besides coming to a full stop 5 to 15 feet before the crossing (plus opening the door and window), bus drivers must turn off anything that creates distracting sounds, including the radio and fans.
White reflects the sun’s heat better, so it keeps the inside of the bus 10° cooler.
The dark tint of the windows blocks a lot of sunlight from getting in, and it retains interior heat in the winter!
Most buses don’t have power steering. This system normally helps the driver use less force to turn the wheels. Buses don’t have it because there’s always the risk that it could fail.
So far, 8 have passed laws requiring school buses to have seatbelts. Occasionally, individual school districts have the freedom to decide whether to implement them.
There are currently about 427,000 school buses in America alone!
If you’ve ever dreamed of owning your own big yellow bus, you can go to eBay now and purchase one for about $3,000.
An average school bus can reach a max of 65 mph (although local speed limit laws for them are usually much lower!).
The largest bus in the world is the Neoplan Jumbocruiser. They stopped production in 1992, but the jumbo-sized coach didn’t disappoint!
The first buses were pretty much horse-drawn farm wagons in the late 1800s. The carriage was labeled “Public School” and it transported children that lived far away. (Most kids still walked to school at that time.)
According to the American School Bus Council, buses save an estimated $7.7 billion every year!
Buses also help our environment. If every child in a community rode the bus to school, it would save more than 2 billion gallons of fuel!
One education report found that students who rode the bus were much less likely to miss school.
There are perks to being a school bus driver! On field trips, they’re sometimes gifted free entrance to those destinations.

I rode that bus for 12 long years. My ride was an hour each way. Thankful for safe bus drivers.
That always scared me as a kid because i thought the bus driver just got mad and was like you know what get off and get hit by a train 😅
Lol
I swear, none of yall have ever ridden a bus. The driver tells you to be quiet, you wonder why? Because they're listening.

I never followed a bus drivers rules. Their job was to drive me to and from school, not be my parent. They're just upset cuz they could have been anywhere in life but there they are driving buses.
Every school bus I been on hasn’t opened the doors on any railroad tracks.
EpicGamer _Pickle Same. I rode the bus home and went over tracks daily.

It depends on the district. You have to do it for your cdl driving test but our district doesn't open the door.
My bus driver it depended some days she would open the door if it was dark out and some days she wouldn’t
More specifically, the 1938 incident in Salt Lake City, Utah is the reason the laws changed after a school bus stopped at a railway crossing in a blizzard, couldn't see the train coming due to terrible visibility.
My pop was a school bus driver and a fleet manager, you never appreciate just how much work goes into driving and maintaining a school bus with all that ware and tare.
I ride the bus and it’s really fun because I can talk to my friends while we’re going to school
Well isn't that something, I missed my bus today for school
When I went to school in 1940' 50's only country kids rode the school bus. If you lived within the city limits , you walked to school. Rain or shine, snow or ice, didn't matter. We did NOT have "snow days", either. If the school buses weren't able to pick up the country kids, then when they did, the kids had to make up any lessons missed. I remember only one day that classes were cancelled. i was a sophomore in h s. A very strong straight line winds blew out the windows on the south side of the school. The next day we went to school with boarded up windows. It was dark in the spanish class I had then. We never thought it was cruel to have to walk to school in INCHES of snow. Most if not all thought it was a privilege to go to school.
This was before the suburbanization of the US took off though
My old buss driver was the best, he was my first and last bust driver for school. After second grade I began homeschooling I miss my bus driver he did so much for the school and was never late even in the worst of winter storms.
7:50
I was once so late with a schoolbus that I and everyone else in it missed the first lessons, break and even lessons after that and arrived at lunchtime 😂
@KoreoBace , didn't your teacher shout at u ??..
If we r late , they will write a diary remark, and if we got more than 5 remarks, we will get warning letter and if we get more than 3 warning letter , we will get suspension. Even if we get into the bus early and the bus driver drives slowly and reach the school ,there will be no complaints on driver, only us ( cruel). They will not kind of take care of us because we r private bus. School bus cause the double money of private bus . And soooo sorry for explaining everything. T_T.
@@zzangdv Getting suspended for being late makes zero sense. If they miss a little bit of school accidentally then they will be forced to miss multiple days of school?
If you stay positive

Not all the time.
good luck with that
I work at an international/IC bus dealership..... in my 15 years, I’ve never seen a School bus with no power steering.
It used to be quite common back in the day, but it is not so common now.

The overhead flashing red lights on school buses work off of a button that the door lever rests against. When the lever is released (to open the door) the lights are engaged and flash. This may vary from state to state but in most I’m certain it is required to have the lights going at any stop the bus makes
everything I ever wanted to know about school buses, and then some, and then some more
Yes
Here in Illinois, school buses aren’t required to have seatbelts but a bus company that has small buses called Septran are required to have seatbelts on every bus even though they do take up a lot of time when trying to evacuate a school bus
I don’t take a bus. My mom or dad doesn’t take me to school. I have working legs, I use them. Great video!

We lived so many different places growing up and every place was picked with being able to walk to school in mind. Looking back, such a great idea exspecially because when school was out and on weekends we could use the school playground.

I rode a bus, and during high school, I drove a bus. The best of both worlds.
Prior to school buses there were many one room schools. School buses could pick up children from far away, allowing the schools to consolidate their students into larger buildings.
I rode the bus and in my opinion I had the best bus driver in the world "Mary Harris", I still love her to pieces and hug her neck every time I see her. I've been out of school for 25 years.

Thanks for answering my questions
Why is this always about school buses
Not true
@Sai Ritvik 4H i noticed that now haha
Imagine that they left the door shut and the bus driver yelled "Want to see your great grand parents kids?"
They open the door cause it’s law, they need to listen for a train so if there is one coming, they can back off.
It makes it more dangerous in my opinion because they must come to a complete stop and the start again. They could get stuck on the tracks at that point. Without stopping it may have the proper momentum to cross the tracks. Especially in snow or ice conditions
So what happened to traffic lights going red if a train is coming?why is the onus on the bus driver to check?and why is it only bus drivers, why not cars? I dont get it
All great questions that are never adequately explained.
Back in the 1950's and '60's I walked to elementary school (K-6). We lived at one end of a block, and the school was at the other end of the block. For high school (7-12) my father (our high school principal) drove me to school, and I took the bus home.
I was just like why does my busdriver stop at the railroad?
Then *notification pops up*
*Place WOW meme here*
Ploxiaz Same
That's incredible dangerous if a train arrives... I don't wanna know...
So that who ever wants can get down
I walked to all of schools I went to, except the first few weeks of second grade, because our new school hadn’t been finished in time to start there. I graduated from high school in 1974, and went to work soon after that.
Probably because if there’s a train accident, passengers can escape.
nope
Or so he can see down the tracks
Real Answer: So that a bus driver Can listen if a train is coming
AliceArtAnimal Man if a train hits the bus, I doubt anyone will be able to escape.
Nah soy can welcome the train in your bus
You answered the question in the first two minutes. I’m scared to see what the other 8 minutes of the video are
Why?
I'm watching this while on the bus.
Cool
Love the song at the first lol nice ding bright side
The reason was because a school bus in Congers, NY a school bus driver heard a train horn, and started driving faster towards the railroad crossing, to beat a Penn Central fast freight. The bus lost. This incident led to the law of buses stopping at crossings.
Service door is on the right, not the left. And it's officially National School Bus Yellow.

Fact Bhai bhau kam kar
School buses are usually governed to 65-70mph, on newer buses this is usually achieved by limiting the transmission, if you buy a bus you can disable this
They really should've jus called this video "facts about buses"
I would mostly ride the bus, but I occassionally would get rides (especially when it was time to do the school play), and in later years, I would drive myself. I have several funny bus stories. one time, we had a half day, and on the ride home, we crossed a railroad track. the driver stopped, as she's supposed to, but when we crossed the track, I looked out the window, and through the fog, I made out 3 lights in the distance. I laughed, because I realized that we came close to getting t-boned, and the driver didn't notice out of a simple fluke.
They don’t open there doors in Australia.
Then How Can You Get In And Out?
@@SansDiamond he means they dont open it on the level crossing

Jokes, what Julie said.
They don’t either in Florida
There are two possible answers.
#1 the bus driver can't stand listening to all the students talking or screaming at the same time, and wants to get out of the bus and run away.
#2 the bus driver is a nice person, and wants the train to get inside the bus
for #2, the bus driver should wait on the tracks with the door open and yell "all aboard" while the train approaches.
It's to listen for trains ik I was in training
When trains comes across the crossings in Canada they are not required to sound the horn every single crossing

It takes longer for a school bus to stop and get going over the tracks. Most times the bus pretty much stops almost on the tracks. And then it takes so long for it to speed up to get over the tracks then it would if they would just go without stopping unless the signals are flashing. Also to if there is a mechanical issue where the bus is all of a sudden not able to get going they are stuck even closer to the tracks then if it broke down while moving and momentum could get the bus fully over. I remember having such dream where I was at the back of the bus and the bus stopped at the tracks and started going again even tho there was a train coming. I remember the bus moving so slow and seeing the train coming and wishing the bus would speed up and get off before the train but we got hit.
I 'm 12 years old still in secondary school and year 8
There are some third world countries like Austin, TX where they don’t have to do honk the horn in certain areas - even though the railroad was there first
The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round all through the town
