Oh snap I made it into an Nsima video haha.
#6 Reason to start BJJ - The people! You'll meet a bunch of really cool goal oriented people. The vast majority of people in the BJJ community literally want to see you succeed. Almost everyone was intimidated to start off. So, when you walk in the gym for the first time just know that everyone else in class was in your shoes and they are usually more than happy to help you fit in.
Kevin Zaki my man, you can’t be more right about this. Should have included that!
I’ve been training Jiu Jitsu for a little over a year and it has pretty much changed who I am as a person. I went from 270 to 220 pounds, it’s motivated me to start lifting, but most of all I’m no longer afraid to go out. I’ve dealt with anxiety my entire adult life because of childhood trauma and one thing that’s always hard to deal with is conflict because as a kid conflict meant violence and I was always the smaller weaker person. Jiu Jitsu has given me the ability to face that without that fear of violence because if it does go to that I have the tools to defend myself. Of course I’d never go out looking for trouble and I’m not a badass, just a white belt that’s been training for a year, but even with my little bit of experience I feel like a completely different person than I was when I started.
I hear you. You deserve your victory keep it up I'm just started a week ago
I do not know you , but I feel proud of you
Jiu Jitsu is the antithesis of anxiety. Even if you have never felt claustrophobic you will when you start bjj, & you will learn to be comfortable when facing discomfort this is when your anxiety disorders, your lack of self confidence will melt away (along with extra bodyfat).
That is great! I’m happy for you 🙏
I love that for you, keep training king!
Great video my friend Keep it up !
I love your videos man super helpful!
@@MrJonathanhidalgo365 thanks
It’s jediiiiii ❤️
hi jedi!
Id love to be in your Guard. 😉
Jocko got me into bjj. Blue belt now and I'm gonna train till i die.
Also point 3 is true af. I don't care how much i eat i stay lean af when I'm rolling everyday.
Adding you to my list of people i wanna roll with lol.
Yeaaaaaaa buddy!
@GlasgowBlueBear1690 never too late to start
Awesome content, dude. Been powerlifting for just a year and started BJJ yesterday. Can't wait for the next class.
Hey man. Today is my first day I'll start doing Juijitsu. Im 62 years old, I have over 30 years in boxing not (Pro). I live a vegetarian lifestyle, I don't drink or smoke. I have to say this video was very encouraging especially for the physical challenges I'll be facing that are different from boxing. Honestly, I feel so healthy to do this because of my food intake lifestyle. I'm approaching it from a need to learn POV. Again,, thank you for your advice and point of view.
I absolutely love this video. I start Jiu-jitsu today and I just know that if I keep practicing I know I will have better confidence in myself and know I can defend myself.
7 month, 2-stripe white belt here. This video motivated the shit outta me. Salute good brotha.
You bring up some great points in this video. Martial arts are a great way to diversify workouts and incorporate "improper alignment" as Ido Portal says, improving mobility and range of motion in all other activities we do, whether its bodybuilding, powerlifting, running, yoga, soccer, etc. After my first class, my entire body was sore! From my neck to my calves. Strength and cardio training in one. Doesn't get more complete than that. Its also cool seeing you get a little more comfortable in front of the camera as you start talking about why you love Jiu Jitsu and sharing your experience with it.
Thanks for the coaching your awesome man, very inspiring
Thank you. This video is appreciated.
This is what I was looking for. Thank you
Hey Nsima, I’m my second week of bjj now and it’s amazing! Watching all your old vids for advice and what not! Would love to see you post more! I love it when you guys talk about it on the power project, but anyways keep it up!
First jiu Jitsu class at 6 today. Talk about good timing lol
Best of luck 💪 Enjoy it 🔥
daveortiz10 get it buddy! Congrats!
Keep at it
Still taking classes?
How's it going ?
Amazing video, I’ll be honest I watched your video because I’m really interested in learning more about jujitsu. However, I do not know anything about any martial arts. I hope to build up enough courage soon to go to a gym and learn. You answered a ton of my questions I had in the back of my mind about jujitsu and I think you’re a great teacher and inspiration.
Im watching this on the eve of my first class tomorrow. I don't think I'll sleep tonight because I'm so excited. I've done a variety of sports and I have been away from anything competitive for a few years now. I'm 33 and I really cant wait, this video has got me even more excited to go!
great video man, had bbj in my mind for quite a while and this video might just be the reason i start training bbj. keep up the good content
Just found your channel. Stared Jiu Jiujitsu last year for health and knowledge. Glad I found your video.
Got my first class today at age 23. Looking forward to it, ready to be humbled and have reason to train and get better
Do that thing bro👍😉
Still doing jiu jitsu now?
@@dnbtom8819 to this day! Got bronze medal in my first comp 2 months ago
@@dominicfrancis9422damn I wanna start so bad I’m just scared bro
@@erwinwayne3129no reason to be scared. look online for nearby gyms and check out the best reviewed. They usually have a week free trial and you can figure out which gym you like. Everyone is usually very welcoming and the head instructor will assign you with partners that should take it easy on you (it’s also a good idea to tell them you’re a brand new beginner, though they’ll figure that out in seconds if they have any more than a few months experience). The hardest part is starting. Just give a gym a call and you should be able to go in as soon as the same day!
Well said # 5 is what got me I lov it. OSS!!!!!
Im finding jiu Jitsu very close to learning a musical instruments, the pain, frustration, realising you know so little, the humble feeling of watching (listening) to someone who is far superior, the triumph when something clicks, the creativity.
Ive been doing Jiu jitsu for about half a year or maybe a little less and love to learn this skill and its amazing.
Bro this was a really good video!!! I do BJJ full time and have just started to lift and it was super interesting to hear your Perspective!!
I like your energy man. Really magnetic
Thank you!
Congrats on the Purple belt man!!!
Thanks!
4 months in. Loving it. Man, I would appreciate it greatly if you could put out some content on conditioning for bjj. HIIT has been carrying over well for me but I’d love to hear your insight. Great upload man.
RudyValo thanks Rudy! I’ll talk about that 👍🏾
Thx for this!
I appreciate you!
I was thinking about getting into boxing. But you’ve convinced me. I am gonna give jujitsu a try.
Great video👍
Nsima, you should definitely do a video on your weekly schedule sessions between powerlifting and BJJ. I've seen videos of Dr. Mike Isratel and Brian Alshrue but since you do both at an amazing level I'd love to see your input.
Cool video !!! I sub / like just to support the community . Love the positive energy and content . One thing I will say is without being “big” or “jacked” you can still be great at jujitsu ! I come from rock climbing background , and our grip strength , flexibility , and isometric strength has been huge for grappling . Just encouraging people who might not be the most big or strongest , jujitsu can still really be something you can be good at as well!! ❤ 🐺
Just rolled you at Waza when I came home for winter break and saw your face on yt like hey I know that guy! Haha. Just subbed to your channel. Good luck with everything bro!
Trained in and coached stand up arts for years and just joined BJJ 6 months ago at an older age, but I am loving it. Truly humbling, etc. But it goes beyond that and it's hard to put into words. It's truly a journey. Excellent point on teh powerlifting, etc. We have a few competition champion lifters in our gym as well as bodybuilders and like you lost a ton of fat fast that shocked even them. We have an old Olympic medalist power lifter as one of our coaches, and well he COMPLETELY sucks to roll with. he's like a freakin gorrilla playing with food when he rolls with people. Good thing he's a nice guy lol.
Thats cool man. Whats your age if you dont mind me asking. Im 32 & in pretty good shape. Did boxing for 9months but really wana do either wrestling or jiu jitsu
I’m so thank full your A body builder as well I been doing bodybuilding and powerlifting for years and now I’m adding bjj two-three times a week to my time. 4 weeks bodybuilding I’m excited I’ve always been competitive but never been in a fighting combat type sport. I’m 23
Great video. Would be great to keep this type of series going. I thought of Chewjitsu when I started watching this, great mention.
I love how in-depth this is! I rarely comment on stuff, but your passion about BJJ paired with your knowledge of it is refreshing and exciting to hear! Once my local gym opens, I am going there straight away.
Awesome video brother! Oss!!! Jiu Jitsu is for everyone. I have dedicated the past 10 years of my life and it's a journey that truly never ends. Two really great other reasons to start Jiu Jitsu is the community and the confidence in your ability to protect yourself.
Do you think bjj workt in Street fight like self defens?
I really love your passion man, I am a white belt one stripe in bjj, I only have 5 months and every day I get my ass beaten on the matts, it is humbling, and frustrating and exciting to lose every time, lol. I also love to hit the gym at leas two times per week. But recently I was thinking to embark on practicing judo a couple days per week. Maybe competing later on this year, let see how it goes.
I had trouble starting do to time and financial problems , but starting today I’m going start my first class
I started training at Gracie Humaita HQ in San Diego a couple weeks ago. Each time class you just feel better. Which keeps you going back for more.
I'm going on Monday to check out an Academy’s prices and hopefully sign up. Can't wait to combine both weightlifting and BJJ.
I have been doing some kind of martial arts since I was 15. I have been training BJJ now for 2 years. Done it in the past but no gi only and not consistently. I’m 33 now honesty never felt better. Plus I’m really getting serious about strength training just recently. I’m glad I found your channel. Great content.
Thank you! Glad this helped!
I saw your channel about 5 months ago and somehow the subscription button didn't work and have been looking for ever since so glad I found it again ...
Thanks for subbing Albert!
Im a powerlifter started boxing 6 weeks ago. I’m loving it! Plus it’s very simple as in terms of just using your arms for striking. My powerlifting has taken a hit but I’m sure il bounce back. I probably will try ju jitsu soon!
Lewsaboy Fitness glad you’re doin it man! I wanna box in the future too 👍🏾👍🏾
Nsima Inyang it’s awesome! Wanting to lose around 40lbs and this is the most fun way for me to lose it!
Really liked the vid thanks subscribed also
Thank you 👊🏾✌🏾
I keep seeing BJJ videos everytime I come on UA-cam lol. Must be a sign that I should go back to it again and love the video
Hey Nsima, yourself and Jocko have certainly been influential on my gravitation to commence BJJ. The one concern and question I would appreciate your insight into is how frequent or common impact is to the groin area? I've had a significant injury there in the past and would not want to risk recurrence. This would be the only deterrent for me from pouring myself into the sport.
Thanks for all your excellent, informative content.
Just took my first BJJ class yesterday it was great!!
16:34 i think I’ve trained with him before over in Tampa. Great guy and really knows good craft.
Great vid
Cool video 👍! Just subscribed
Glad you're here!
I started because I am and always have been a quiet and non confrontational person, which gives some people the assumption that I'm weak. Since training in bjj, the inner confidence it's given me to know that IF anything were to happen physically with me, my wife, or my family, I'll be the one who decides how it's going to end. It's changed my life and made me a better person. I'd go as far to say the life skills I've gained off the mat far outweigh the self defense skills I've attained, although those skills are awesome too 😉
jesus bro second at ibjjf. That's impressive asf keep that grind
When he says he loves Jiu Jitsu, I get excited!
Just started my bjj journey! Its so tough but gonna keep at it. I am doing the kick boxing program at my gym too but gonna stick with bjj and lets see where I am a year from now! Loved this talk thanks for the motivation. Gonna update with future vlogs as well.
Keep it up!
@@NsimaInyang thank you! Been over 1 month so far! Its fun and challenging! I am definitely getting the hang of some of the moves. Still so much to learn but one day at a time!
when you start you'll have more "bad days" than "good days" but like everything else, you'll get better as you continue on your journey. Just keep showing up, I know it sounds cliche but that's the best advice I have received. Getting smashed just means there's still room for improvement. Good luck!
just took my first class yesterday. never even exercised before, completely out of shape but it was still amazing
Keep at it man 👊🏾
Great Videa
Hollywood people do really do crack bro, take this like and comment bump 🤙🏻
Watched this and immediately emailed my local BJJ academy 😂 great video!
Dude, you are the swolest man who has ever swoled
Love it
Congratulations on the Purple Belt!!
MouthGuardComic thank you!
how many days a week do you lift and do jiujitsu? i just started training jiujitsu and i just got my first stripe. i also love lifting but i'm still trying to figure out how to balance the two.
Was wondering what you do for a living to be able to spend so much time learning ,and how is the best way to manipulate work around instructors schedules
I’m a powerlifter thinking about joining a BJJ gym. But I’m not sure how to balance both my trainings throughout the week? How should I work my lifting split into going to a BJJ gym? Any advice would be great
Purple Lightsaber = Purple Belt! 😄👍
May The Force Be With You!
You speak wonderful
I’m curious what is your training schedule? I’m 28 years old and I’ve been training BJJ for 10 months, I want to compete soon. So I’m weight training in the morning and doing BJJ in the evening 5 days a week. Is that a good training schedule? Or do you think I’m over doing it?
Great tips!! Love the channel! Congratulations on your purple belt. Where are you based?
Sacramento, Ca!
@@NsimaInyang cool.. have to visit one day
I rarely...if ever speak on training.....but this guys journey sounds exactly like mine. With the exception of competition lol....
But seriously....I noticed jiu-jitsu was great for keeping my body fat....at the athelete range...single digit-13%
I started in 2011....and I train in the present....admittedly....only about 4-5 years actual mat time in that decade.
I love it.......11 year white belt.
44 years old
Still benchpress 400
Still deadlift 450
With a pathetic squat of 350 lol
Suffice to say I enjoyed this....because I love jiu-jitsu......
I liked the video.
I've been living on Rio de Janeiro, I'm going to start BJJ classes..
Hi great content !!
i wanted to ask few questions:
1.How do you avoid over training with this intensity of training?
2. Do you find the constant short periods of choking to cause some damage to the brain in the long term?
Tnx!
Please list your powerlifting sets, reps and what parts you train together. I am looking to improve.and appreciate.any help. Thank you, sir.
What do you suggest heavy less repsmore rest or light more reps less rest
Great video! How old were you when you started?
23
Hi, I've liked the video, it's been very insightful, but my question is what if I do not lift weights and do bodyweight exercises instead?
Also, should we do gi BJJor non gi? I think that's how it's spelled. Gi? Gee? Either way, I think non gi is much more realistic but what do you think?
Badasss video
Glad you enjoyed it 👊🏾
I would like to train bjj, but I also would like to stay with striking martial arts and lifting. What should I do?
This dude look like a black Goku lmao (Jiu-Jitsu is boss) 3 year purple is some good shitttt... Wow
Thanks Franz!
I would love to train with these guys who are big and jacked and who do jiu-jitsu in all aspects in training jiu-jitsu, and weightlifting.
How old were you when you started bjj , i’m 26 should I start they journey?
Yes I started with traditional Japanese Jujutsu Ryu and ninjutsu nimpo bugei martial arts as practiced by the ninja and samurai of Japan.
I recently started bjj due to covid and my dojo closing down for the duration.
Thinking bjj was similar to traditional Japanese Jujutsu Ryu, no I can say it's not really but having just done my first week it's very different form of Jujutsu than what I have done to date. So am starting from scratch however there are similarities between the two. I like bjj also so far hope it helps
Glad you’re enjoying it man!
Same story here. Got a black belt in Japanese jiujitsu. Been going a month of BJJ and got continually choked and arm barred. Also my whole body is getting bruised much more. But I am 58 now so my tissue damage not healing might cause me to stop. I try to cut back while rolling (randori) but I keep putting 100 percent into it and so does the other guy.
Congratulations on the mace windu belt
Thanks!
Have my first bjj class at 17. Hopefully i wont quit and lose interest. I wanna do it as a hobby and for fun
I started BJJ at 62 .. I've always been in great Shape since i was 10 years old TKD Boxing Karate Swimming Jogging Very Flexible, Yoga ect. At 62 i decided to go & get Humbled & CRUSHED .... I have no injuries from the past NONE 0 at all..... But I always Train Smart 53 years now of training.... When you roll ,Roll Slow & FLOW , NON of this Smashing rolling, you won't learn anything & roll With Blue belts & Up don't roll with White belts like yourself cause thats when injuries happen ... So far over 1 year Bjj & Do Injuries... Wish The OLD MAN Luck....
Yep! Rolling with white belts when you’re also new can be really dangerous 🤷🏾♂️
What about bruising and healing from it? 58 here and after 5 weeks not sure my outer tissue can take it.
i have a question, why if im sitting all day im tired at the gym? theorically im resting everyday more than 8 hours and im always tired in the gym for no reason, if i take off-days im even more tired, my nutrition and sleep is on point so idk wtf is wrong with me
Excellent video! "Why are your nostrils so large?" I laughed out loud at that
Hahahaha
What a monster
Is it good for self défense ?
The Jiu-jitsu gym that I train at has a lot of jacked guys who train.
You'll have an edge with strength and size but don't go in there thinking you'll whoop everyone on your first day.
I dont really get how the belt system works, isnt it white blue purple brown and then black , for what is yellow and green?
Is bij better than WERSTEL or judo??
What do you think??
Hey man! I started bjj yesterday because of your videos i like it but I didn’t love it it’s that common? Maybe i should give it a couple months
Sometimes people dislike it because nothing makes sense. The first 6 months to 1 year are the hardest. but when things begin to click, it becomes super fun
Sparring depends on training partner on being injury free. Also, being able to communicate your experience to your training partner.
True
I've been doing bjj since 2018 and I'm still white... purple at 3 years tf
Nsima hi my name is Glenn. I really enjoyed this vid about the five reasons for starting Jiu Jitsu. I’m really wanting to start training however I’m 64 years old, and do you think I can really get into it and keep training for years to come? I want to really but I guess I’m just second guessing myself. What is your honest opinion? I’m really really thinking about it! Thank you for your time. Peace!
Go for it!!!! It’s never too late
I have genetically extreme weak connective tissue. Should I avoid BJJ?
