Michelangelo's David is already half a millennium old, and looks good as new. It's made out of solid marble. Barring deliberate destruction, David will actually last longer than the rock because it's not left open to the elements. Whenever someone claims that all art is political and that modern art is better than classical art, I just consider them a person whose brain has rotted away. Think about the man who spent years of his life studying and depicting the human figure in many mediums because it was beautiful to him and got patrons to pay for his art because they also found those depictions beautiful. Then compare it to the man who makes some autistic scribbles on a canvas to represent how capitalism is bad or how he feels when he sees his dog, and then gets to display it in a modern art museum.
This is the correct take. Despite some people trying to argue the best art depends on its message, the best art is truly just what’s most impressive based on the skill required to create it. If it has a profound meaning on top of that, that’s great, but it’s just a bonus. Vermeer’s work is insane, and the fact that he even may have used a camera lucida to create more lifelike art really drives home how clever artists like him probably were. To suggest people like Warhol and Basquiat are even in the same universe as that sort of talent is disingenuous at best.

I know I'm a month late, but I just have to comment, he states the rock is impressive because it's built to last thousands of years. Michelangelo's David is already half a millennium old, and looks good as new. It's made out of solid marble. Barring deliberate destruction, David will actually last longer than the rock because it's not left open to the elements. This guy is such a dimwit he can only put forth the most basic arguments, and even then he's wrong.
Whenever someone claims that all art is political and that modern art is better than classical art, I just consider them a person whose brain has rotted away. Think about the man who spent years of his life studying and depicting the human figure in many mediums because it was beautiful to him and got patrons to pay for his art because they also found those depictions beautiful. Then compare it to the man who makes some autistic scribbles on a canvas to represent how capitalism is bad or how he feels when he sees his dog, and then gets to display it in a modern art museum.
This is the correct take. Despite some people trying to argue the best art depends on its message, the best art is truly just what’s most impressive based on the skill required to create it.
If it has a profound meaning on top of that, that’s great, but it’s just a bonus.
Vermeer’s work is insane, and the fact that he even may have used a camera lucida to create more lifelike art really drives home how clever artists like him probably were.
To suggest people like Warhol and Basquiat are even in the same universe as that sort of talent is disingenuous at best.
Have you never seen landscape art or calligraphy? Does all art need to be based in reality with a human figure? If that’s the case, what’s the point of imagination or would photorealistic art be the “best”? What a retarded opinion. Calligraphists have studied for years to master their hand writing yet they’re disregarded by you.

If you're going to try and big it up at least mention something like Louise Bourgeois making giant metal spiders, Bridget Riley's sickening optical illusions or MC Escher's mathematical animal tessellations.

They did that by shifting them to radical individualism and self expression, as opposed to trying to organize collectively to enact political change and part of that was funding and encouraging modern art.
