You are an expert just due to the fact of how often you dress down game in the field, it makes sense that the way that knife design let's your dominant finger choke up on the choil edge to get the increment leverage on that blade for tedious tasks, the designer was right there in the "skin in the game" literally lol knew what was right in the design because you found that same usefulness as a kindred hunter. True proven application for a man in the bush instead of gimmicky blade design when they produced this knife. Appreciate your forthcoming knowledge in this video, you know your schitt.
The izula is a must and we should all have at least one in our backpack ,I always have one in my medical pocket. The big real problem with these knives are the sheaths ,which suck.
Nice review and tips, i got a White River M1 Backpacker Pro, because i can use it in salt water fishing and food prep, the S35VN is amazing steel, no corrosion. But yeah, Izula is a really nice option for some hard tasks.
The Kabar Escabar (BK14) has the same handle, 1/2" bigger blade, and better alloy steel with chromium/vanadium added for higher edge retention and edge toughness. On top of that, the BK14 is about $10-15 cheaper. It's a no brainer. BK14 for the win. YMMV.
GLOCKCOPG23 I have a few of the eskabars nice knife! Nowhere near an izula though. Sorry. Still a great knife for the money. But cheap coating no chinking poor edge retention and not as good of a blade shape. Good knife but not an izula
tbwpodcast I too have both knives and my experience differs from your's. Both my Kabar BK11 and BK14 have better edge retention than both of my Izuala. Not a whole lot but enough for me to notice. On all four, my edges are set at 25 degrees which is about optimal for this blade thickness and steel composition. I agree about the coating but the darn coating on both the Izula and the BK11/14 needs to be chemically removed any way for a drag free slice through tougher media. In my experience the Izula is a really nice knife but it cost more than it should. I mean, come on, $60 or so for plain Jane 1095? Esee does have a really good heat treat for pedestrian 1095 but the added components of the BK11/14 steel and a similar heat treat let it pull ahead. Again, not by much but still ahead. Like I pointed out before, when you figure in cost and performance, the BK11/14 simply gives more of what a knife is supposed to do.....Cut stuff and hold an edge. We will have to agree to disagree on this one. I suppose it's much like the old Glock vs Sig debate.....That gets ridiculous. Lol. Good luck this hunting season and be safe out there.
A comment six years later. Why not? ;) I had and sold an Izula and I kept the BK14. Best of both worlds: Becker blade shape in 1095cv, with a straight Izula handle.

I’ve heard several rave reviews about the White River Caper and Backpacker, but I’ve never seen any videos demonstrating how much hard use it can take. The Izula is legendary, in my book, for being able to take an extraordinary amount of abuse, especially for its size. However, I’ve heard that S30V is quite brittle in comparison, hence my question.
The izula is 1095 and is softer and more flexible so it can handle the abuse. But at the cost of edge retention (however, esee heat treat is amazing and resharpens so fast). S30v is harder and there for can chip and break and is not really designed for very hard use. But s30v holds an edge longer and also takes longer to sharpen. So it depends on your use. If you are gonna use the knife for normal knife stuff the s30 is gonna work great. If you are going to beat the knife and rely on it for hard use s30v is probably not the steel you want.

Just looked it up! Very Impressive knife! Love the design. Wish it was 1095 but o1 is also a great steel. Going to buy this if I can find one in stock somwhere. out of stock on the site. Thanks for sharing this.
would love your thoughts on the "new kid on the block" montana knife company company. i currently have esee izuala and esee3 (you are on the money about the izula), and white river backpacker with orange paracord in s35v with pvd coating, and fire crafter 3.5. great video!
Love the candi! My brother has carried one every day since it came out. Fantastic knife. I like a little bigger as I live in the woods. But it's an excellent little knife.
I don’t have one but every ESEE is a well made solid tool and I’m not a fanboy either. I’m actually into BRK’s but Esee makes a solid knife and I want the esee 6 or laser strike next. The candiru is too small for me it’s more for a mini tin backup knife. Still excellent quality though
Oh, Say Heah, Check out the Drowning Independence Fix Blade, It also comes with orange and other colors, I think you'll like it, I think its in the 154 C M Stainless and its pretty good too.,,.
Yep. On every deer I kill I always cut all the ribs ring next to sternum before I gut it so I can easily get up in there. The izula works great for it.
What is your process for stripping the coating on the blade and giving it a patina ? I love the look of the black coating left on the handle but stripped on the blade like you've done there. Any info would be much appreciated !
Any paint stripper. After, clean with alcohol & put into a warm pan of apple cider vinegar for approx one hour, or as long as it takes for the desired patina. There's YT videos on the process.
@@SamkoTradBow I have the PR 4 but I really prefer the 3 or the Isula II. I' ve just taken a quadri-lock from another blade I never use and put it into the 3 sheath for scout carry as, being a small knife, it's my fav way to use it.
@@SamkoTradBow Yes, I think so! I would not use it for big blades, but for the sizes I like best (about 4 inches) it's more confortable in my kind of environment.

Hi ! Maybe you can help me :) I am looking for a quality, versatile (my priority) and robust knife. After several searches, I hesitate between the Izula 2 and the Spyderco Paramilitary 2. What do you think ?
For me I love the izula. Spiderco is good too but I prefer 1095 steel for its resistance to breaking. And the stupid hole spiderco puts in the spine reduces its strength. So for me and my monet it would be the izula all day!
@@SamkoTradBow There’s also another knife that looks interesting : Extrema Ratio Satre You know it ? what do you think ? is it better to choose Izula ?
According to their website all of their knives are close to 20 degrees but they are hand sharpened so may vary slightly. I have an Esse 4 that was gifted to me on Father’s Day a few years ago and it is 20. I like it so much I’m considering buying the izula the 4 is great but it’s a lot to carry everyday so I usually only end up carrying it occasionally though I want to carry it daily.
@@YahushaIsTheWayyeah it’s awesome. I got mine from DLT because I had $22 off and then I got the TKC scales in blue and black and I love it. I wanted the esee 6 too but I knew I couldn’t edc it so I got the Izula first. Still trying to get the esee 6 a year later 😂
ESEE since 2014 has made the Izula in s35vn and it cost $77.00. FYI. buy the ESEE Izula in s35vn not the White River. The Izula's spine way thicker and way stronger than any White River knife made @ 0.16!!! Also ESEE has a no questions asked lifetime warranty,....White Rive does not!!! Izula is three times the knife of anything currently manufactured by White River. No, im not affiliated in any aspect of ESEE,....just looking out for my fellow knife comunity enthusiasts.
Don't need the longer handle on the 2. The izula is a Edc knife for me not a hour long use knife. So the shorter size beats comfort for what I use it for.
I wish!!! my wife says " no way you are paying that much for a fancy version of a knife that you already have a bunch of." so for the sake of my marriage a Damascus izula is not on the short list right now, but definitely on my wish list!
Sean B I have not tried that model from tops. But I will say tops makes incredible knives. Again like ese and Rowan it's all in the heat treat. Any knife from tops is excellent. Actually when I need a new knife only places I look is esee or tops.
I just bought the beretta Azusa kit in black. I’m hoping it has the same structural aspects of the standard azulas. In a noob at all this. Love the review.
Yep same knife just a collaboration with beretta. You will love it. Gets scary sharp fast and easy and is indestructible. Been carrying the same one for about 15 years now
That’s good to hear! I have a mint beretta jetfire in .25cal and thought the two would be a great pairing. I got the complete kit for 53 dollars, ordered a set of scales for it and really think it will be a good fir for me. Can’t wait now!
There is also a Chinese copy on eBay running right now. It’s 5 bucks and a bit of shipping costs. I think I’ll buy one just for the sake of comparison and use it as a beater. Do you know anything about the clones? Someone mentioned that his held up pretty well.
@@bigriceburner dont know anything about the clones but they are not 1095 heat treated by rowen. So the clone will not hold an edge as well, sharpen as well or be as durable. Just looked it up! Very Impressive knife! Love the design. Wish it was 1095 but o1 is also a great steel. Going to buy this if I can find one in stock somwhere. out of stock on the site. Thanks for sharing this.
I’m looking forward to your review once you acquire one!
Ya sold me! Thanks 😊
Such a great knife
Still waiting to see a side by side of this and the altitude.
would love your thoughts on the "new kid on the block" montana knife company company. i currently have esee izuala and esee3 (you are on the money about the izula), and white river backpacker with orange paracord in s35v with pvd coating, and fire crafter 3.5. great video!
have not seen them yet but will check em out when I get a chance.
Love me an izula! You should try bark river PSK edc. I carry mine 24/7 lol
Barks are amazing knives!
Great knife the PSK , on a par at least with an izula & better (imo) than a M1 :)
Complimenti👍👍👍🔥
Thank you
I’m going to use your same setup! What are the knots you use to attach the lanyard to the sheath, and to make a loop?
Both are just an over hand knot. Sweat and easy.
@@SamkoTradBow Great thank you! It’s a clever setup.
What do you think of the Candiru? Great video. One of the best.
I'm sold..im ordering one
You will love it
Thesen and and the e mora garbirfg are my favs
Thesen knife what to hell is that knife?
Izula now comes in S35V and I’m thinking of getting it.
Its very nice. I bought one to give as a gift. Very impressive.
Are these Izula or Izula II? sorry if you stated that. EDIT.. I just now realized you have both on the table. 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏼🤦🏻♂️
These are all izulas. I don't own a 2.
Nice vid. I own 4 Izulas. Great knives. Have you bought the s35v stainless Izula yet?
I have not. Might someday but so happy with my carbon izulas not in a hurry to.
Oh, Say Heah, Check out the Drowning Independence Fix Blade, It also comes with orange and other colors, I think you'll like it, I think its in the 154 C M Stainless and its pretty good too.,,.
Great video!
Thanks
Are you able to get through the rib cage on a deer with a knife that small ?
Yep. On every deer I kill I always cut all the ribs ring next to sternum before I gut it so I can easily get up in there. The izula works great for it.
I have copy of that knife from CB distributors it's a CR313 stainless steel blade found it at gas station near me for 899
Totally agree
What is your process for stripping the coating on the blade and giving it a patina ? I love the look of the black coating left on the handle but stripped on the blade like you've done there. Any info would be much appreciated !
I have a video I did shortly after this video that shows how to do a patina. Called izula mods.
Any paint stripper. After, clean with alcohol & put into a warm pan of apple cider vinegar for approx one hour, or as long as it takes for the desired patina. There's YT videos on the process.
I love my Isula II...but now I have a Esee 3... but I like the micarta scales better then G10!
But as only knife I would lean to the 3!
Yep the 3 is fantastic
@@SamkoTradBow
I have the PR 4 but I really prefer the 3 or the Isula II. I' ve just taken a quadri-lock from another blade I never use and put it into the 3 sheath for scout carry as, being a small knife, it's my fav way to use it.
@@GAUROCH2 awesome. Scout carry is excellent
@@SamkoTradBow
Yes, I think so! I would not use it for big blades, but for the sizes I like best (about 4 inches) it's more confortable in my kind of environment.
@@GAUROCH2 PR-4 is an excellent outdoorsman's blade, one of my favorites, I Love it.
What i want is bk14 blade shape esee's 1095 steel Izula 2 handle.. That would be perfect.
That would be a amazing knife. I'd buy it in a heart beat
I just got my new izula! Amazing knife, the only thing that I don't like is the handle so I will wrap it with paracord😌
Glad you like it. Yep the paracord handle make a it very comfortable. The scales you can put on the handle also work great.
Thanks for the reply:) In my country this thing costs around 80$, but it's still worth it if you ask me.
@@retardedbongo9681 yep well worth it! Great knife
Great Video
@@HarrisChapman-xi9oq glad you enjoyed it
Very helpful. 👍
Thanks
Love what you did to the sheath. Can you help me understand how exactly you "grinded" it down? What tools did you use?
Used a bench grinder to do it. Just a normal 2 wheel bench grinder with a medium grit standard wheel
Say Heah, I actually like the BK-14, I got the Scales for mine, They sent me two sets of scales, it comes that way with black and orange scales, So what's a guy to do with a extra set of scales, I got another BK-14, Now I have one in the black scales and one in orange scales. I neck carry them, But now I could color match them with my other knives. I have my BK-9/BK-10 I added the black scaled BK-14, Then my O.K.C. Ranger RD-9/Ranger Afghan both are in the 5160 and with orange hi-viz orange handles, yup, you got it, I added my orange scaled BK-14 I use these two with many if my knives.,,.
Hi ! Maybe you can help me :)
I am looking for a quality, versatile (my priority) and robust knife.
@@SamkoTradBow Thank you very much for your answer ! Go for Izula ;)
@@SamkoTradBow There’s also another knife that looks interesting : Extrema Ratio Satre
You know it ? what do you think ? is it better to choose Izula ?
Does anyone know the angle these are sharpened to at production?
I do not. Hopefully someone that does will chime in.
I own several
Yep amazing knife!
Currently waiting on and izula s35vn with tkc micarta scales.
You will love it
@@SamkoTradBow have it in my hands right now. It feels fantastic! I'll definitely have to have more than one of them.
@@richroc7 it'll be soon ill have a junglas 2 and the 4 in s35vn
Cheers Mate!
ESEE since 2014 has made the Izula in s35vn and it cost
$77.00.
FYI. buy the ESEE Izula in s35vn not the White River.
Esee makes my favorite production knives. Whitw rivers are fantastic too.
That’s a lot of energy in that review but great, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
The Title says it all.!!
Agree 100
why do you like the izula better than the izula 2 ?
Don't need the longer handle on the 2. The izula is a Edc knife for me not a hour long use knife. So the shorter size beats comfort for what I use it for.
You need one of the Damascus izula s brother.
I wish!!! my wife says " no way you are paying that much for a fancy version of a knife that you already have a bunch of." so for the sake of my marriage a Damascus izula is not on the short list right now, but definitely on my wish list!
How do you take off the coating
Zip stripper paint remover
Thanks, I just purchased one and I’m not super crazy about the coating. I feel an acid wash will be much better.
@@ezntertainment3601 you will love the knife. It's pretty easy to strip the costing off. I have a video called izula mods that shows it in full detail
Black oxide finish is the way to go, imo. It protects without the annoying thick & bumpy paint coat that's on most Esee knives.
Have you ever tried a TOPS MSK 2.5 knife? I would love to see a comparison
Sean B I have not tried that model from tops. But I will say tops makes incredible knives. Again like ese and Rowan it's all in the heat treat. Any knife from tops is excellent. Actually when I need a new knife only places I look is esee or tops.
Damn it! I was deciding which one of these knives are better, but you gave me a tough choice! ESEE looks cooler though
Sean B lol. Cant bo wrong with either. But not gonna lie. For my hands and uses nothing beats the izula for most of what I do
Ok, thanks for your opinion! Oh, and I was meaning to ask, how do you sharpen your ESEE Izula at home or in the field?
I use a ceramic rod to sharpen them strop on leather then strop on my Jean's (strop on my thigh when wearing jeans... works amazing).
I skinned and broke down an entire Buck with this knife. Freakin awesome blade!
Glad you love it too. One of my all time favorites
I prefer BK14 Eskabar
Great knife!
Sold!!!
You will love it
So.... You're saying it's just OK then?
Hahaha
I would not waste the money as it will be more of a gas station knock off knife that's worthless. The rowen heat treat on the 1095 is what makes an esee so great.
@@SamkoTradBow that's cool. I'll take your advice and just wait on the beretta. I knew the steel wasnt as capable, but just wanted to see but most likely you hit the nail on the head. Thanks!
"Vagina" means sheath in Latin.
A great knife indeed! And dude, lighten up on the Adderall...
Wahahahah
Boning with a knife is classed as rape in the uk.
awful knife
