    When you learn from a mediocre teacher, you can only reach a subpar level yourself. When you learn from a master, you can also hope to become great. I believe that this tutorial gives us all the potential to become great at embroidery. Excellent technique, perfect explanation and very clear instruction!

    From Beth, not Russ. I teach painting classes and, as a teacher, I want to applaud you for your videos. You are an incredible teacher. Clear, complete, slow enough to easily follow, generous with your tips and advice, expansive with the “why we do it this way” explanations and beautifully filmed. I’m returning to embroidery after decades long absence and it is a joy to watch your videos. Thank you so much! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

      Take it slowly Jan! Simplify it and just start with one colour and work a whole row in that colour concentrating on the edge and the stitch angle. Change colour for the second row and do the same. Small steps!

    Wow! That is a very interesting technique of fanning the stitches, makes a lot of sense and the result is very polished. I am going to use it to make round forms, like grapes.
    Thank you very much for this input.

    • @SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
      @SarahHomfrayEmbroidery  5 років тому +2

      Little tip for you Daniela; try drawing lines to represent the stitches on a design first, then when you come to stitch your grapes, you will know exactly what angle to put the stitches!

    • @danielasoibelman7555
      @danielasoibelman7555 5 років тому

      Sarah Homfray Embroidery, thank you very much Sarah for your tip. I used to make round shapes using either only horizontal or only vertical stitches, and have to say I didn’t quite like the results I got. This technique making stitches along a radius you’ve shown allows a more natural shading.

      I use the Verstaile Table Clamp that you can buy from our shop here Carol:
      www.sarahhomfray.com/myshop/prod_4538062-Versatile-table-clamp.html
      Check the measurements in the detailed description to make sure it will fit your table first!
      I don't hide my knots on the back, I use a waste knot on the front then cut it off after I have worked a few starting stitches. See my video on starting and finishing threads here:

      Check out our video on starting and finishing threads Valerie. I've used one strand on this project but it depends on time, eyesight, effect etc. We have a kit available of this design with everything you need as well as written instructions to accompany the videos and we ship worldwide! Never did this before, looks beautiful,may I ask why you made the knot and other small stitches on top of the work ? Is it to anker the thread, so you do not have ends or strands you have to work into the embroidery?

      The knot is called a waste knot Mirjam, it gets cut off once the stitching has started. The two small stitches hold the thread in the fabric while you start stitching. Unlike the knot, these remain in the work so you need to make sure you put them somewhere where they will get covered up! This method is great if you are working on a large frame that you can't turn over easily. You can use the two small stitches to finish your thread also, then bring it to the top and cut it off. This way you can start and finish all of your threads from the top of the work!

      This was just the explanation I was looking for!
      By any chance, are you planning a tutorial on the first steps one should take when she is starting a stitching project (and tips on how to avoid clutter on the back of the fabric)? Do you have (or are you planning) a suggested tutorial/s for beginners?
      Thank you!

      We will be doing more silk shading videos Mirjam and a distance learning class in silk shading as part of our Four Seasons set of distance learning classes, which will look much more in depth at this technique. To avoid clutter on the back, start and finish your threads with the two small stitches, bring the threads to the top when you aren't using them and don't travel them across the back if you can help it!
