I just check one of my new ProOne 9" Filters from ProPur systems and it states " Certified by NSF International" right on the box. I sell lots of these filters to owners of Berkey Systems here in Canada. They are on the NSF website you provided to check on. Thanks for the good investigation into this.

Did you try using a TDS meter? I know when you buy a Zero Water filter system a TDS meter comes with it to check your parts per million. They also have a realistic chart that comes with the system that gives you a general feel for how long each filter will last depending on the type of water and where you get it. So Zero Water also comes with a chart too. If it does not read 000 on the TDS meter then you have contaminants. When it gets to 006 you have to change the filter. The PPM on our city water out of the tap through a house water filter is 85 PPM. When I send that through the Zero water filter the same TDS meter reads 000. So maybe Zero Water truly is one of the few filter companies that tells you up front, hey, you may get a month use out of this filter realistically. Plan on replacing each filter once a month or longer depending on what water you filter, its source and how often. I would suggest purchasing a TDS meter if you want a true water reading. I only know one water filter system on the market that gets you down to Zero contaminants and that is why they have their product aptly named. =^_^=
I am a water treatment plant operator. I can't speak for Berkey, but I have an Alexapure pro water filter and I am very happy with it. You have to use a little common sense when it come to these filters. The dirtier the water you're filtering, the more often you need to change your filters. When it starts filtering slower, your filter is getting clogged up and needs to be changed. If you had no other water source, I'd boil your water after filtering it if you're still concerned about bacteria, etc.I'd much rather have one of these than nothing at all when the shtf.
@@Lifesbeengood There a lot of different ways of making a DIY water filter. My point was that ANY filter is better than no filter in an SHTF situation. Heck, I’d just put a few drops of bleach in a glass of river water after I ran it through a cloth filter if I was thirsty enough! 😁
Except it wont filter out what would make you sick in that situation. I tested the water from mine (sent it off to a lab to be tested), in SHTF situation you'll be screwed thinking its better water ... its not! In SHTF situation make your own distillation process. Because relying on a Berkey will send you to the hospital.
It's an unsettled lawsuit. There's a guy from CA suing Texas Pete hot sauce right now because it's actually made in NC instead of TX! Anyone can sue anybody for any reason. I'll wait until a judgement has been reached b4 trashing a company.
I did a video about two weeks ago on it. You can get a complete water sample analysis for around $25. I did one before and after the Berkey. I’m waiting on the results now until I see data I don’t care about popular opinion. I’ll send you the data when I get it
@@MDCreekmore yes sir. It is a good article I’ve read it before. I’ve been using Berkey or Dalton filters for 10 years filtering everything the black filters do as well as the white ones. They filter chlorine fluoride and arsenic I think. I’ll wait on the before and after results of my water quality test and I’ll send them to you in an email.
@@MDCreekmore That's a good article. It's focusing mostly on the Berkey white fluorite filter adding aluminum to the water. I thought you were talking about the Berkey black filters. The Berkey white fluorite filters screw onto the bottom of the Berkey black filters. My white filters died a long time ago, and I am just going to go without them.
After filtering how much water through them? You probably don't use fluoridated toothpaste but you do eat and bathe. How much Fluoride are you getting from those activities?
How worried should a fella be that filters aren't certified by standards set by the government that a prepper is prepping himself to defend his life from possibly?
I rely on the Red Dye test to ascertain if molecules of that size and larger are filtered out. PPM/TDS test meters tell you virtually nothing since all of the important molecules (yes, the following are atoms but they are generally diatomic or linked to other atoms) like Potassium, Calcium, Sodium, Manganese, Iron, etc. are small enough to pass through the filter...which is a good thing.

Been using a Big Berkey with ceramic filters for years, love it! It depends on how dirty the water is to start with as to how much usage a filter can be effective. Sure beats nasty bacteria and chlorine.
ironically carbon filters don't manage to filter bacteria very well at all and in fact become a source of bacteria if not changed every 2 months or so due to the fact that they do manage to remove chlorine.
@@Doofus171 that would interest me! ive sended the destilled water i have to a lab & they sayed its dead water sounds good for me i want nothing alive in there ^^
I have had a Berkey since 2014 i am only concerened about Chlorine and Flouride i test for this every 6 months and it works in both of these situations so i am good with continuing to use my berkey.
@@ladybee4564 You do understand that fluoride as a compound is not totally inert and that it's not some magical compound that's only good in all situations correct? Harvard research did a study like 12 years ago showing very strong correlation between fluoride causing IQ drops in young chldren. Harvard... Fluorosis is a real thing and we have a massive osteoporosis problem in this country. Not everything is black and white. Not saying all fluoride is always bad and always evil, but you talk like a simpleton when you just speak in absolutes like that.
For those who are claiming that the ProOne has NSF certification, the filters are ONLY certified for the materials used in the filter, not for the contaminant filtration abilities. Im not.for it or against it, just thought some out there may want to know.
I have a Pro Pur gravity fed filter that has been in use for years. We are on a well and I can say that it tastes putrid unfiltered. After the filtration it tastes pure and delicious and clean. I cannot attest to the scientific data of the water. I just know it tastes far better.
They're pretty close. If I recall correctly, the ProPur also filters Fluoride and Arsenic in the same filters, a real plus. I went with Berkey, however...don't recall why.
@@OptimalTraining I just bought a Purewell gravity filtration system and it's also NSF 372 certified. I didn't know anything about all this until I saw this video just now. I went with Purewell because it was less expensive! 😆
I use ProPure water filters only, their Filters are tested and certified by 3rd Party labs, they do NOT test their own Filters. lot's of people I know use ProPure Filters in their Berkey systems. To get Flouride out of your water Berkey wants you to pay extra for their better filters NOT the Filters they send out with their systems. It doesn't really matter how fast it is what matters is WHAT it takes out. The faster the system the less pure the water. I just looked at a new ProPur ProOne 9" Ceramic Filter and on it it states Certified by NSF International.
Why is Berkey filters closing? The EPA has not utilized this new re-interpretation to stop the sale of any other outdoor water filter, just Berkey® alone. We have been informed that the real issue is that because of Covid-19, the EPA does not like the fact that Berkey® filters are capable of removing virus from your water.Dec 19, 2023
Along time ago I watched lds prepper do a video on the Berkey system. He even added water from a drainage ditch to it and his family drank it. I said right then that's what I wanted. As the years went by I myself have put water in it from my pond, the creek and so on. I'm still here and never got sick. The only problem I ever had was the price of the filters. So as most folks I bought some so called filters from Amazon that claimed to be Berkey filters but were half the price. These didn't do anything really and barely passed the dye test. I contacted Berkey and was told if those filters didn't come from them directly or a authorized dealer they were fake. They did not sale their filters any other way. Since then I have bought my filters from them. It's hard to say in this law suite what filters folks were using. I imagine it's the cheap ones from Amazon that aren't the real stuff and have failed the testing. People always want to buy cheap and you get what you pay for. Still I have used water from the pond just showing friends how it works. About that testing lab, when you look into it, they charge a fee for each test. So if your filters do 100 things that's 100 x fee for each thing = I couldn't afford them. I'll just wait and see what happens. I would hope you wouldn't trash these guys til this thing is over. Have a blessed day.
@southwestprepper5216 Well said. Obviously dirtier water more frequent filters need changed. If someone is having an issue understanding a simple concept like this as a prepper, they have more issues than water being safe to drink.lolol.Sorry,but This guy on video🤫
@@BornagaininYeshua777 Now we can't get them because the epa shut them down on the silver in the bottom of the filter to help with bacteria removal which we know works. Now you can still buy the original filters from dealers that had them before the ban. They are real pricey let me tell ya as I bought some. Since my post here I still haven't changed them as you can clean them to keep going but still after cleaning I still dye test them.
I'm keeping my berkey, we have used the same filters for 3yrs with maintenance. Could the government be lying on testing to keep us from drinking clean water? State and government testing sounds sketchy to me. Just saying it has to be better than the tap water they want you to drink that they could put anything in.
We use an Alexapure unit here. As some mentioned below, I think the longevity of the filter is contingent upon the kind of water that is inputted. If you are putting pre-treated tap water directly into the unit, it works far better and far LONGER than dumping unstrained, , greenish, creek or lake water in it... or water collected from questionable sources. I think a lot depends on how OFTEN folks will disassemble the unit and CLEAN said filter! We do it religiously every 2 weeks here. We wipe it down and get the residue buildup off of the filter wall, and I bought a cheap rubber primer piece from Berkey, and it unclogs the filter when it begins running noticeably slower. So all that said? We use only 1 filter in the unit... we have 13 animals and 4 adults that consume the water from the Alexapure, which I recently changed after 1 FULL YEAR when the water started tasting less purified. So.... How many gallons in a year have gone through that filter? Answer.....I have NO clue! lol A LOT! WAY more than 200 gallons..... but most likely less than the 5000 Alexapure advertises. MD's correct.... these gravity fed units DO have their quirks and drawbacks. And ya gotta stay on top the filter cleaning for logevity. Wise to do anyway, as they don't exactly GIVE these filters away! But I'm happy with this Alexapure unit.
We use Alexapure also. Had water tested for fluoride etc. after 3000 gal. Came back nearly exactly as advertised. $85 full spectrum water test gave me a lot of peace of mind.
We use AlexaPur as well. 3 adults and 2 large dogs. We live it, we run tap water through it. Taste is amazing. Also use it for my inside plants and they are flourishing. We clean ours every couple months. Had it almost a year now and no issues.
Alexapure here also, had mine 4yrs always clean and back flush the filter, just me and the wife and dog. Still on the same filter, filtering tap water, and we have good tap water. If I was to filter creek, river, lake water, I would filter through sand, stone, charcoal homemade filter first
It's a hard issue to grab hold of bc we all have a investment into gravity filters. But the bottom line is Berkey has and continues to claim 3000 gallons per filter with NO scientific testing to back the claim. Only tested to 200 gallons on tap water. Tested to 1100 gallons for lead and failed after 1100.
My new plan is to pour water through a t-shirt and or paper coffee filter to get out larger particles, then boil and cool the water or drops of bleach. Then filter the water via Berkey as the last step.
You could pre-filter using Sawyer squeeze gravity fed,it’s easy to clean the sawyer by backflushing, rather than messing about with cloth etc. Then if you wish you could use an ultraviolet water purifier. This would save enormously on cost, time and hassle of boiling. This method will deal with everything except chemicals (chlorine etc) and heavy metals. (Not sure about viruses, but it’s extremely unlikely anyway)
Agreed, that was our plan as well, pre-filter, boil, then system. Just a note on the Sawyer comment, the powers that be just haven't come for them yet. These are ALL good filter options (Berkey, Sawyer, LifeStraw, etc).
@@granthill2980 My reason for filtering first was to preserve the Berkey filter not gumming up and clogging to filter much more volume of water before filter replacement. This is for say water source when tap water is not an option that I am supposing.
When my Berkey water starts tasting a bit off I know it's time to clean my filters. After I do that the water tastes great. Hey...its the best water ever, especially from the fridge.
The fact that this product does not pass California state regulations to be sold there doesn't really concern me. It seems that state has become the poster child for state government regulation. Some businesses, like Berkey, simply choose not to sell their product there because of all the costly hoops that the state makes a business jump through in the name of "safety". As for the claim that one of Berkeys black filters can clean 3000 gallons of water, well, I think that would depend greatly on the condition of the water you are putting into it. Berkey is still a good product and you should continue to use your Berkey if you have been happy with it's performance. Just because it is not available for purchase in California does not suddenly make it dangerous or a useless piece of junk.
It's banned by the feds now. I think it's probably a good filter but because of the countless lawsuits and other things over the last decade I decided to stop recommending it because there're other gravity filters that are just as good or better.
Trust me. I used filters in a Lab setting for over 20 years , in my previous job at a major distillery. If the filter stopped "working" it would be clogged up. That's the nature of high carbon filters. They only stop filtering when they stop dripping. I have gotten 10k gallons out of my Alexapur Pro filters, and have tested the water independently at 3k and 5k gallons.
Thanks for this information. Years ago, I had watched a youtuber who said the same thing, and he showed how to unclog the filter using compressed air or an air compressor at less than 10 psi (over that it will destroy the filter). He had worked in a water reclamation facility, so he (like you) has personal, professional experience. He has had the same filters for a number of years, I don't recall if he actually measured the gallons used.
@@ThereISABootONYourTHROAT The test results have nothing to do with the filter rating. I used the same equipment to test my water as the distillery uses to test their water going into the finished product prior to bottling. Trust me, it's a better lab result than any of these companies you mail your sample into to get a result. Which are usually a gimmick, especially the Home Depot method, which is nothing more than a plot to sell their own filter system.
Ive used the berky for over 15 yrs. Ive used it in remote beach conditions where the water is actually amber looking and smells of sulpher and its came out completely clear and with no smell. Ill take my chances with what ive used.
Richie From Boston has been using BB for years and loves it. He also said on his Overland channel that BB filters actually get better at filtering the more they're used. They also can be used indefinitely. Once they start clogging up, you just blow them out with an air compressor, or canned air. I was up in the air about which water filter to get for a long time. Then I found out with Health Ranger's Mike Adams, who tested some WF's, and the BB scored very well. He has a very expensive certified professional lab, mind you. I also discovered that they were banned in the Communist State of California, and that the EPA was trying to ban them as well, nationwide. They're the only WF company the EPA is attacking... Isn't that interesting. That's all I needed to hear. Got me two of them! 😊👍

Water is considered safe if it is 50 ppm or under, our tap water is 600 ppm. It was still 600 ppm after ran it through my gravity filter (Berkey or alexapure). Doesn't matter what's causing the high reading, I'm not drinking it. However, what these products don't filter out is inorganic compounds.
@@katherinebruce500 With all due respect, where did you get those numbers, Katherine? 600 ppm of what? 20 ppm each of 10 beneficial minerals like Sodium, Potassium, Selenium, Iron, Zinc, etc. will FAR exceed your baseline but would be important for good health (which, I'm sure, is why most tap water reads about 220 ppm out of the faucet). You need to get a copy of your complete Water Quality Report and find out why your reading is so high. My guess would be too much Iron from old pipes (which is bad for men). Gravity filters do not filter out minerals which is why your TDS meter reading won't change post-filtering. If you can't find anything from your WQR, then you need to have your tap water tested to find the culprit(s).
@@graveseeker I did get a water report from my local area. I live in an area that had (and still does) a lot of mining. Don't drink the water in a mining town! Consuming too many minerals (even if some are beneficial in small amounts), is deleterious to ones health.
@@unknownunknown9274 depends on how dirty your tap water is. Mine started at around 180-190 using the meter that came with the zerowater pitcher. The Alexapure filter water came out at 240...more polluted than just leaving it tap water. Mind you this was an Alexapure filter used for 2 years, but it shows they obviously only last around the 200 gallons they are tested for. So far I got about 40 days of use out of one zerowater filter but I've seen some people's don't even last a month.
Part of the lawsuit is that it doesn't actually filter out everything they claim it does. There are a few channels that on here that are actually part of the lawsuit or involved in the lawsuit.
California claims that the Berkey filters can't possibly filter out Lead because their filters aren't designed to do that. Berkey's testing says that Lead is filtered out. I have no clue how a judge is going to resolve that.
@@graveseeker sounds like someone sent their filters into an independent lab and they are no better than the cheap $20 inline filters. Guess we shall see what comes of it.
@@graveseeker I’ll see if I can track down the post I saw. A woman supposedly paid to have the Berkey and the UK ones tested. That’s essentially what was in the lawsuit docs online also, whether those were real or not I couldn’t say.
I bought a counter top distiller rather than a new pair of ceramic candles and was amazed at the amount of junk that was left behind in the tank, and clearly not removed by the candle filters. The only thing the candles filter out is the chlorine smell by the internal activated carbon. The distiller takes out everything even the fluoride. Best tasting water I’ve had and is definitely recommend one as a replacement for a gravity fed filter.
In a non-SHTF environment we have many options for drinking water. however, when the SHTF, and you have neither water pressure or electricity, let's see what those distillers and osmosis filters do for you. I will supplement the Berkey with boiling, thank you.
@@George-nt8uw Having mobile off-grid solar power for electric distillers addresses that, especially where I live as it’s sunny most of the time and I have access to sea water if necessary. I can also use a fire operated system in lieu of electricity. For now I use it for health reasons (removing fluoride, chlorine and who knows what else they add to the municipal supply). But I don’t trust the gravity feed filters unless I had nothing else.
@@what_the_mike thanks for the info! Two questions, how can we distill water on an open fire? What about the lack of minerals in the distilled water…do you add them back? Appreciate your help…I own the Big Berkey and I am very unhappy…
There are a couple of different filters you can get for the Berkfield water filtration. One of the filter type has a charcoal added in the ceramic filter that helps eliminate lead, sediment, heavy metals, chlorine, microplastics, and more . There's the regular ceramic candle filters.
I’m using the Zero Water system, I like it because it tells you up front that depending on the water being filtered, your results will vary for how many gallons the filter is good for. The one I have is the bigger version which comes with a TDS tester (Total Dissolved Solids) and tells you that you should change the filter at 0.006 ppm. It has a 5 stage filter which they say also removes lead.
Do be careful, though. Their literature says they do NOT filter all bacteria out. You will need to boil your water if that is a potential problem. Or use it in tandem with a Lifestraw.
I understand about gravity fed filters it's just like a oil filter it's how small the holes are in the filter. But I learned back when I was a boy scout in the 60s. Use coffee filters and boil your water. And still today I have a construction cooler and a restaurant pot that are the same size I boil that water. I put it in the construction cooler. And when I keep that pot full as well. This way I always have 10 gallons of pure drinking water on hand in my kitchen.
We bought ours for SHTF to filter rain water and pool water I think that everything you have said aside I feel like it would be an asset in a bad situation But I don’t plant on dipping from a pond or puddle It’s just one tool in our prep
I'm in the northwest of Ireland, one of my Facebook friends paid a lab to test tap water before and after being filtered through a Berky, The results were shocking, AFTER being filtered the amount of aluminium in the water was multiple times more, She posted the lab's reports and correspondence/letters from Berky and her all on her Facebook, It seems Berky run their own tests, But an independent lab got very different results, So much so I've retired my Berky to the attic, I'm checking out charcoal filters from the Phoenix company, they fit inside the Berky, so I might set it up again if these charcoal filters turn out to be worth buying, Does anyone use them? Does anyone have any reliable information about them?
I've been running straight river water through mine for over 3 years. I clean the filters about once a month. My dog and I are just fine and so is anyone else who has drank from the Berkey system. I will confess however that upon installing brand new filters you will get high ppm for a while and this is due to carbon from the filter itself and is not harmful at all. I ran water that was in a storage tank underground for well over 5 years and the filters clogged up during the first run of filling due to the micro organisms but the water that actually passed through the filters I drank and was fine. I think all this negative attack towards Berkey is all due to not properly identifying what the ppm actually is which is the carbon from the new filters which takes time to pass through.
I don’t recall the brand, but the DIY kit I bought came with ceramic filters and documents that tell you that dirty water will reduce the gallons you can filter. It also came with a prefilter and material to clean your filter (and they suggest using a prefilter before their system). I’ve tested if with river water, lake water, even irrigation ditch water. All is pretty clean in color, but the filter system has worked great. I’d recommend you test whatever you’re planning to use and know it’s capabilities and be picky about what you run through it.
Years ago, I had a serious issue with berkey. The filters broke completely off their base. They claimed it was defective adhesive, but they wouldn’t warranty them. I did a video showing the filters and my communication with berkey. They threatened me with legal action. I said bring it. Never heard from them again and since then I only buy doulton ceramic filters.
My recommendation which has NO certification, but I have all confidence in is the natural filters that anyone can make. They are used in third world countries villages who have to drink from puddles. Using food grade buckets, water passes through 1- pebbles, 2- sand, 3-activated charcoal. After that, I like to add another bucket with a ceramic filter.
Ever been to Mexico? Montezuma's Revenge, to which locals are largely immune, is nothing to trifle with - especially if you have no medical assets to call upon. If you make your own filter, boil the filtered water before consumption.
I’ve always used Berkys but all of mine have ceramic filters not the black Berkey filters. I question them when they came out and actually called up Berkey and they wouldn’t tell me anything about their black filter. Made me very skeptical. Ceramic filters have always proven to be good. Just my thoughts on the matter
@YeetPenguin I had gotten a great deal buying bulk 7” Doulton filters on eBay. This was pre convid. I just looked but the seller is no longer active. Sorry
@YeetPenguin I was saving up for a Berkeley system but not now, I just boil my water I live on seven hundred a month so I have to save to get everything as costly as Berkeley
@@granthill2980 Don’t think the black filters are ceramic as I saw a video where someone cut through one vertically; it had an open space in the center core and layers of black plastic-appearing material surrounding the core.
I have a partial solution that worked for me one time in an emergency. I was bicycle camping and ran out of water. I was at a very rustic campground bordering a lake and I had two choices: Use Lake water or well water, filter it and then drink it. After seeing the rusty-colored water from the well, I chose Lake water with a small twist. I used a collapsible bucket, filled it with water, then let it stand overnight. Lake water in northern WI, is filled with greenish suspended 'stuff'. Letting it stand overnight allowed all that to settle. Then I used (best available 30-years ago) filter that also added a bit of iodine taste to the water to kill viruses. I could not believe how much of that 'green crap' suspended in the lake water settled out overnight! Hope this helps someone. Thoughts?
Meh... After watching what's happened in a few other industries, it's clear that certification is about a lot more than test results. There's politics involved. I prefer a company that won't compromise for politics. Especially when dealing with CA - it's not going to be a one-and-done; it's going to be "change your product every year to stay in compliance with whatever hairball law we passed this time."
I've had my big Berkey for almost 20 years and clean my filters with vinegar and it brings them back to like new condition and I am totally positive that they filter out even way more than what they claim because I think if the public knew how capable these filters are they wouldn't make much money anymore. The Sawyer mini filter that a lot of Preppers use claims 100,000 gallons they're made out of the same material as the Berkey black filters. In 2008 my well went dry and I drank water out of the creek that was near my home and rainwater until 2014 and I continue to use it and feel totally confident that they will do exactly what the claim to do. The Red Cross has used big berkeys in countries with bad water and the military has so I'm sure everything is legit.
@@baueretro7423 you can go online and read all kinds of really good stuff about carbon filtration what it can block and what it can't you can even go on different product sites like Sawyer or Berkey and there's others it's all the same carbon filter, you can even make carbon filters it's no secret.
I believe it's perfect timing that our enemy the left is putting out information like this. Brother this is a attack from the enemy psychological warfare. Nobody that has been using berkey or other water filter's have complained until this lawsuit! Is it possible that they actually do a pretty good job? All the food recall's have been proven to be not so truthful so is this lawsuit happening at the perfect time to throw people into upheaval? I don't know, but something seems wrong about this sudden problem even though people have been giving high praise on the system for year's🤔🤔🤔
thats a good point! its possible that maybe the company changes stuff after they get money so stuff breaks or clogs up faster i would say testing would be nice to see
I agree they are a bit deceptive; however, just about everything I purchase has a notice for California that says This product contains chemicals known to cause cancer.... It gets ridiculous. I bought a new mini bicycle pump yesterday with that same warning.
@@polskigirl8547 And unnecessary. If the filter passes the Red Dye test it will filter any contaminants with larger pore sizes than the red dye. I understand Berkey's (et. al.) hesitancy and frustration.
I never jumped on the Berkley bandwagon that most preppers seem to have as they are not BOB/BOV portable. I have always kept Katadyn water filters for this reason and their superb Swiss engineering.
Water Filter Guru on UA-cam does videos where he sends in his tap water compared to different water filters, including gravity fed water filters, to an independent lab. It's interesting to watch. They still filter out some of the contaminants. I'll admit it's suspicious they use this language and suspicious they do not pursue NSF certification. Great video, thanks
mike adams report was pretty vague about what he tested, although he clearly states he is an affiliate with berkey and receives commission with each sale.
I'm keeping and using our Big Berkey every day and have extra filters for later. LDSPrepper (David Gillmore) is an authorized dealer and has linked several reports for information on third party testing and the results. You may think that he has a vested interest in supporting the quality of the filtering on Berkey products, but he is not dependent on them for his income and investigates the data before recommending the products. I don't know what the motives are of the people with the lawsuits. While we cannot be guaranteed that any products sold for purifying water are doing all they say, and know there are knock-offs out there so you have to be careful where you order from, I trust that my Berkey is filtering well until I am convinced that there is proof to the contrary. I do not trust city water treatment to do as well alone and we have seen whole towns' water supply contaminated and the diseases resulting from that, so I feel that even the tap water needs filtered. Other than tap water, any water source we may need to use will be pre-filtered with coffee filters or cloth, boiled, bleach or other sterilizing drops, and then through my Berkey. Having more than one method of doing everything is advisable and treating your water is a priority. Thank you for information and take care.
California does everything possible to burden businesses with heavy fees and expenses. I would not do business there for that reason alone. Additionally I'm fairly certain that most heavily regulated industries and markets can barely break even under the weight of CA's regulatory expenses.
That is false. If you think that filtering through a T-shirt or even a grass/gravel/sand/charcoal filter is better than nothing, you may find yourself dead. There is a huge difference between filtration and purification.
I always went back and forth about these filters. We are blessed to have very good well water so any filter would have been for a long-term issue which would affect electric, and then failure of my pump or energy backup. So it seemed superfluous. Instead I finally bought activated charcoal, sand and gravel as well as five gallon buckets for a homemade system. I have all the parts but won't ever put it together unless I need it. Love my Berkey water filter. 3yrs now, 1st used on city water for a yr, then creek water for a yr now rain collection water. Still using same filters, I stand with Berkey..
My question with the berkey is they sale different filters to filter fluoride, but only the water going through that filter is filtering fluoride. The water going through the black filters still has fluoride in it.
Ive got uranium in my well water. I got 6 black Berkey filters for my unit. It reduced it ,but not to the accepted level. The acceptable level is .030. my test came back .049.
I use the AquaMetix high end filters. Many years ago they told me you cannot double the figure for multiple filters being used. One filter is MAX 1200 gal….four filters is a total of 1200 gal. And that is for tap water. Crap water would be 100-200 gallons.
Combining my knowledge of fluid dynamics from engineer school, and my firsthand experience with Katadyn and a few other hand pump bushcraft filters, I can't imagine how a gravity filer could remove much. It would by nature clog up any media or filter element very fast if it had a screen small enough to remove such particles. My hand pumps usually have a filter life 1/10-1/5 what the box advertises before becoming clogged. Most industrial/commercial water filtration relies on chemicals and beneficial bacteria to remove bad bacteria and toxins. We have a huge wastewater plant at my work to process our own effluent.
I just bought a Purewell water filtration system and luckily it's NSF 372 certified. I didn't know anything about this until just now! I went with Purewell because it was less expensive than Berkey! 😆
Berkey has done a great job at using the Prepper and Homesteader communities to promote their product. This has helped to drive the cost of not only their product but gravity fed water filters in general. Many of these companies claim in their literature that they are NSF tested when in fact, they aren't. The question is, who enforces this false advertising?
The materials used to make the filter have been certified, not the filtration results themselves from what I've seen on their site. "Tested to NSF standards" does not mean NSF tested or certified, just more bogus misleading advertising. This from their site makes that pretty clear: "ProOne® G2.0 Series water filter cartridge is Tested and Certified by NSF International against NSF/ANSI Standard 42 for material requirements only".
I think that it all.deoends on how the unit is used. You really need to clean the water as much as possible before putting it in the berky filter. Trash screens using wire mesh or cheese cloth. I think the berky was really on intended for clean trash free water and not unfilter pond water for example
I was thinking aboit the PortaWell system since it's a pressurized system (basically uses a pump with a house filter system all in one), but NSF has no product cert on their site that I can see (but since the filters are house filters, those might be certified). The video I saw on it had one comment that mentioned it's pump pressure seems high enough to be able to put a reverse osmosis component into it & that would probably do pretty good for NSF certification. Ideally, a powered system like this with manual lever action override would be best. Couple that with a strong pre-filter, carbon & KDF chambers and that should knock out a lot of chemicals as well.
I want to know do sell bottle water in California ? If so is it filtered by a certified by NSF filtered . Most likely not that all water company do filter the & bottle it.
Many years ago I read some scathing reviews on the berkey, so I didn’t buy it. I did pick up catadyn/katydn gravity system. I initially bought it from some missionaries and have bought replacement filters. It will be a back up to boiling, this brand appeared to be used overseas. I think it is made in Switzerland. I’m glad that I didn’t pay for the berkey system, but if users are not getting ill, maybe it is helpful?
When Im out camping I always pre filter any water source using an simple t-shirt or coffe filter. Then the most mudd and sedement will be removed. That makes any filter last any longer. A filter that only needs to filter Bacteria or viruses will last much longer.
I still have my Berkley on the countertop but I stopped using their filters a couple years ago when I heard about all this. I use Greenfield Aquametix filters that have the NSF certification. I will keep using these unless something better comes up!
I have not had much experience with these water filters claims, but I have been distilling tap water for the last three or four years. The amount of left over stuff I collected from just 30 gallons of tap water is quite disturbing. If I have a container the size of a black Berkley filter, the solid powdery 'mud' would fill up to at least 1/5 of the filter. That's just from 1/100 of the 3k gallon one of these filter is good for!! Some questions for thoughts.. Which specific minerals in the water is supposedly good for our body that we cannot get from our foods? Can our body digest the inorganic mineral found in water? If our body do not and cannot digest the inorganic minerals, where do they go? Do they get collected somewhere in our body?
RichieFromBoston has a great way to clean a Berkey water filter! Please read what I have to say. Berkey filters are supposed to clean up to 6000 gallons of water. Now, it doesn't say what type of water. I've always used tap water. I've had my Berkey for 5 years and when I went to open the spigot, water came out, but then this SNOT like substance was hanging. Plus the filters were covered in filthy black smut! I'll tell you what I did to clean it. 1. Use very hot tap water to soak the filters in. 2. Then clean the hardware/container inside and outside. You can use soap. 3. If you have an air compressor, buy a blower to hook up to the air compressor. Put the blower up to the bottom of the filter and slowly turn it on. Then turn it on almost full blast. You'll see all the black and green gunk escaping the filter. That means it's cleaning it. Do that at least 3-5 times with the hot water in the filters. Trust me. It WORKS!!! Then get some pipe cleaners and clean out the spigot. You'll be good to go! I did it and it works like a champ! These filters will last forever if you clean them this way. Thanks to RichieFromBoston!
What is the best thing for toxic tap water. Im disabled and its hard to carry water in house. I live near a plastics plant that dumps crap in the river. Thank you!
@@MDCreekmore Everything is banned or carries that stupid label in California and Im sure we will see a lot more states following suit. Id much rather trust my own experience and others that have tested it than the gubment! But hey, that’s just me! To each their own. None of us will ever know how safe anything really is😊
I watched & commented on this video a year ago. I've filtered just over 4,000 gallons with a pair of black filters (tap water). I just cleaned them a week ago then did the red food dye test. They failed. They look like the seal or glue around the bases are giving out or the calcified rubber corks failed or possibly the washers. Im going to change out the corks & washers & try to seal the filters at the base. Even if it does pass the food color test after that, I'm not sure I'll have confidence in them any more. I have a spare set that I was saving for SHTF but I'm going to try to find something else.
Wow. They were supposed to be the "prepper " go to water filter. I feel SO PISSED OFF, RIGHT NOW. I paid alot of money for a Berkey, just to know my family's drinking water would be safe. I wish I knew where to join this LAWSUIT!
Reverse osmosis is a better system but I haven’t got to that point yet unfortunately. I built my own . Our water is horrible here and the state mails out a letter twice a year. Tri something….Water reeks of chlorine and ammonia. Filter seems to strip at least the smell . I backwash once a month. Shocking how much crap is in our drinking water. Thanks for the video. Have a great evening

Thank you again, MD, for turning the lights on to doing the research before buying. Hopefully these gravity fed water filter systems get testing professionally And either get the certification or fix the problems... And then send out new filters to all their customers. But I am Not holding my breath. Blessings!
I still have a screenshot of one of the many emails I got from going back and forth with MyPatriotSupply about the Alexapure Gravity Water Filter wherein I was have severe issues filtering water collected from a dehumidifier. They were not nice in telling me that the Alexapure filters ONLY filter from fresh water sources. #1 that’s just asinine for any company who purports to sell “emergency” water filters. #2 I don’t think you can get a much fresher water source than out of the air. So, why does Alexapure’s POS filter work for tap water but NOT with water collected from a dehumidifier?
Think about all the sudden food recall's that went on! That happened until people started coming forward about it! I never saw any complaint's about Berkey until it was SUDDENLY made public...about this lawsuit🤔🤔🤔 my gut is screaming B.S. about it just like the fake food eecall's!!!
I have zero water set up for my water dispenser…..I test periodically and comes up zero contaminants…..if your city water is low in contaminants your filters will last a lot longer…. My city water is 8 ppm….

You also need to keep all of the components of your filter clean. A small bottle brush is perfect for cleaning your spout.

Does your plant add fluoride to the water ? I wish ours did not.
With all the facts you have presented, in an SHTF situation, I would much rather rely on a gravity filter versus no filter.
Exactly
Totally agree
You can make one from bed sheets, sand, charcoal and grass that would work just as well
@@Lifesbeengood There a lot of different ways of making a DIY water filter.
I rely on the Red Dye test to ascertain if molecules of that size and larger are filtered out.

I'm keeping my berkey, we have used the same filters for 3yrs with maintenance. Could the government be lying on testing to keep us from drinking clean water? State and government testing sounds sketchy to me. Just saying it has to be better than the tap water they want you to drink that they could put anything in.
If you purify your water, removing the contaminants, you wouldn't be ingesting enough p●is●n = fl●ride... 🤔👀😟
Get a TDS meter and you will see your Berkey water is no different than tap water
Answer.....I have NO clue! lol
A LOT!
Thank you. I have an AlexaPure but haven’t set it up yet. 👍🏼
Alexapure here also, had mine 4yrs always clean and back flush the filter, just me and the wife and dog. Still on the same filter, filtering tap water, and we have good tap water. If I was to filter creek, river, lake water, I would filter through sand, stone, charcoal homemade filter first
Ty
Yes, We we’re planning to pre filtered water when shtf just to save the Berkey filter.
Agreed, that was our plan as well, pre-filter, boil, then system.
Just a note on the Sawyer comment, the powers that be just haven't come for them yet. These are ALL good filter options (Berkey, Sawyer, LifeStraw, etc).
Lotta work. Use the Berkey, then pour your drinking water in a Brita pitcher and put it in the fridge.
@@granthill2980 My reason for filtering first was to preserve the Berkey filter not gumming up and clogging to filter much more volume of water before filter replacement. This is for say water source when tap water is not an option that I am supposing.

Great, please email me the test results. Appreciated.

I live in AZ. and our water is 600ppm from the tap. I ran my water through a cleaned , new gravity fed water purifier. The results were still 600ppm.
TDS readings are irrelevant. Berkey does not remove many of the desirable minerals that raise TDS readings.
parts per million of what? What chemical or pathogen were you testing for?
Get the pitcher ZERO WATER Alaska prepper tested that.. came out perfect..I would use my berkey then put it through zero water pitcher
It does not filter bacteria. All it does is remove particles, nothing significant when you need clean water
I also use the zero water filter, but doesn’t seem like the filters last very long. They clog up very quickly.
I use ProOne water Filters and on a NEW Filter 9" I have in my hand it states Certified by NSF International.
I’ve heard about those and was going to do some more research. This actually makes me feel better. Thank you.
Where did you buy these?
The certification is on the materials not the filtered water.
Part of the lawsuit is that it doesn't actually filter out everything they claim it does. There are a few channels that on here that are actually part of the lawsuit or involved in the lawsuit.
Now that makes sense!!

I replaced my problematic black Berkey filters with Doulton ceramic candles. It's been 3 years and still working decent; clean every 6 months or so.
@@nadinemacv1848 Berkey doesn’t filter fluoride either, unless you buy the separate white fluoride filters for more money…
Reverse Osmosis and Distillation are definitely superior filtration methods. systems that add carbon as a pre-filter method are even better.

I got the Zero Water system for my 4 kids and my grown grand kids for Christmas this year.
Do be careful, though. Their literature says they do NOT filter all bacteria out. You will need to boil your water if that is a potential problem. Or use it in tandem with a Lifestraw.
Unfortunately it’s only good for a month then you have to replace the filter that’s 12x10 comes out to be $120 a year zero water is excellent
@@jjjackson5183 The kids also have Sawyers. When they receive their Zeros I'll be doing some explaining. But they are better than most.
@@lonewolffullmoon It’s cleaner and cheaper than store bought water, which I have seen for myself, anyway
We bought ours for SHTF to filter rain water and pool water
I think that everything you have said aside
I feel like it would be an asset in a bad situation
But I don’t plant on dipping from a pond or puddle
It’s just one tool in our prep
Make sure you have a way to prime your Berkey filters if they are not in constant use 🙃 I have the bulb that they sell to do that with clean water 😉

I'm in the northwest of Ireland, one of my Facebook friends paid a lab to test tap water before and after being filtered through a Berky,
The results were shocking, AFTER being filtered the amount of aluminium in the water was multiple times more,
She posted the lab's reports and correspondence/letters from Berky and her all on her Facebook,
It seems Berky run their own tests,
But an independent lab got very different results,
So much so I've retired my Berky to the attic,
I'm checking out charcoal filters from the Phoenix company, they fit inside the Berky, so I might set it up again if these charcoal filters turn out to be worth buying,
Does anyone use them? Does anyone have any reliable information about them?
Charcoal is a great filter medium as is unglazed porcelain. Find both and compare spec sheets.
Agreed! 😃
Can you get the name of this DIY kit that would be great thank you in advance

I couldn’t find the one I was referring to, but here’s another one that shows basic concept. “How to make a water filter in the wild, caveman Cody”
Yep. You can also use bed sheets, but buckets sound like a better method
Ever been to Mexico? Montezuma's Revenge, to which locals are largely immune, is nothing to trifle with - especially if you have no medical assets to call upon. If you make your own filter, boil the filtered water before consumption.

I have a military survival manual from the 1940's and it shows how to filter water. It takes some work and time but it is very effective.
It doesn't matter the outside is made from. It's the part inside that filters the water. Always the inside of the filters that cleans the water
@YeetPenguin I had gotten a great deal buying bulk 7” Doulton filters on eBay. This was pre convid. I just looked but the seller is no longer active. Sorry

Thoughts?
Supposed to clean filters once a month. No major clean. Just basically scrubbing off the stuff that can clog the filter. That's it. I love mine.
Yep, let's hope they're working as advertised.
I have a question: if i buy Water Filtration System and i buy additional filter - could i use the filter after i.e. 5-10 years on the shelf?
They also said JIF peanut butter was compromised. Still eating my stash.

I agree they are a bit deceptive; however, just about everything I purchase has a notice for California that says This product contains chemicals known to cause cancer.... It gets ridiculous. I bought a new mini bicycle pump yesterday with that same warning.
One reason that Berkey may not want to get NSF certification is that they would have to disclose their manufacturer.
The cost of getting NSF tested water for 400 plus contaminants is very costly…

Mike Adams , did a check on it in his lab a few years ago, Berkey is great

Just a late FYI: According to British Berkefeld/Doulton, their filters are NSF certified (NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 372 and 401).
I made my filter from Quartzite Sand and Activated Charcoal.
I agree with your added purification methods used, whenever your water source may be questionable... ❤
California does everything possible to burden businesses with heavy fees and expenses. I would not do business there for that reason alone. Additionally I'm fairly certain that most heavily regulated industries and markets can barely break even under the weight of CA's regulatory expenses.
Anything is better than nothing especially during an emergency.
That is false. If you think that filtering through a T-shirt or even a grass/gravel/sand/charcoal filter is better than nothing, you may find yourself dead. There is a huge difference between filtration and purification.
Good catch ! Thanks for the heads up ! Just checked Lifestraw, same thing even though it says Certified "B" Corporation. Misleading...yup !

I never thought of it this way though, I almost bought a Berkey last winter but didn't have the money. Thanks for the headsup!
Also, they say it will filter viruses. The filter will filter down to.2 microns. Viruses are mostly below.045 microns
I just bought a Purewell water filtration system and luckily it's NSF 372 certified. I didn't know anything about this until just now! I went with Purewell because it was less expensive than Berkey! 😆
Good post MD! Bothered many, I'm happy to see the discussion!
ProOne Big+ gravity filter using the ProOne G2.0 9″ has been NSF certified.
That filter will fit into the Berkey tank too from what I could find out.
Couple that with a strong pre-filter, carbon & KDF chambers and that should knock out a lot of chemicals as well.
we took the advice of another prepper and we just purchased the Berkey filters only. it cost us almost 200.00 bucks now I am mad as hell

Do they get collected somewhere in our body?
good questions, yes as i know they go in the brain; bones; liver; kidney; arteries & do a lot of damage!
So, why does Alexapure’s POS filter work for tap water but NOT with water collected from a dehumidifier?
Wow.
@@MDCreekmore I sent you an email with that screenshot. I looked for the other emails but I must have deleted them.
Think about all the sudden food recall's that went on! That happened until people started coming forward about it! I never saw any complaint's about Berkey until it was SUDDENLY made public...about this lawsuit🤔🤔🤔 my gut is screaming B.S. about it just like the fake food eecall's!!!
It Could be possible:/ The government has lied about so much:/
AMEN ON THAT!!!
OR, spend the money on a testing kit and find the truth for yourself 🤷♂ That might be a better source than your gut
I have zero water set up for my water dispenser…..I test periodically and comes up zero contaminants…..if your city water is low in contaminants your filters will last a lot longer….
My city water is 8 ppm….
