    Deantoni has a bunch of solo albums, he plays synth while playing drums, ive seen him play it live. I enjoy his work but i still think Jon Theodore is the iconic Mars Volta drummer.

      @@AureliusR Yeah, I find his ghost notes don't come through so clearly in QoTSA, and he has to play very heavy handed so his incredible dynamics also don't come through. I haven't listened to the latest album a heap though tbh.

    Regarding the "head nod" comment, I think Omar used to have several signals like adjusting his glasses to signal ending a section or how many times to repeat a section

      Yep, you can even kind of see everyone setting up for that moment and focusing on Omar as he hands off the droning chords to the loop.
      These guys are *tight.*

    His album "You're Welcome" (どういたしまして) with Ximena Sariñana on vocals is a wonderful buffet of Omar's songs and a good introductory album for new listeners.

    Fuck I miss The Mars Volta. I can spend a day listening to their albums one after the other and get to the end and just want more. That's when I console myself with Omar's solo stuff.

    Omar has a million solo albums. I recommend the earlier ones til about 2010 and his stuff with TMV. it's all very dense, trippy and insane. Lol

      Axe to Fall seems like the more drum intensive record, You Fail Me's pretty straight forward, but good suggestion.

    To answer his inquiry "I wonder how much of this is written & how much is improv": The intro & outro is written & played the same way every time. The poetry/words/mouth sounds Omar makes over the (for lack of a better term) verses/choruses clearly are made up on the spot over an established progression(s)... Lastly the middle section or "having a musical conversation" as Omar often calls it: The riff (& I believe the length of this section) that's repeated endlessly (clearly in the spirit of Afro Beat improv sections) on the Bass & Keys is the only pre-determined part used strictly to anchor the piece from descending into total chaos as the guitar soloing, improvised drumming & atmospheric noise being played by Omar, D & Lars respectively are all made up on the spot, every time . . .

    that show influenced me massively (played in a Mars-esque prog band for many years). I wasn't actually a big fan of Parks with the Mars Volta, but he's a monster on these records and the live shows are superb.

    it is worth noting that not all the oRL band sounds like this. much of it is actually way more song orientated than what is presented here. also deantoni plays bass via keys ala the doors for much of the current oRL band stuff

    that was sick! crazy good player, music had a very jazzy, improv feel to itt. Check out some DnB or Jungledrummers, also jawdropping to me what they do on hi-hat variations sometimes

    at the time of release of this live album (You're Welcom or Dōitashimashite ) all songs had been released on studio, except this one. This is all improvisation. ;P

    Wooow, my favorite song for my favorite artist ever (Omar Rodriguez Lopez) ! Please watch his Technoself projects, he plays drums and keyboards at the same time. I'd love to have your reaction to his playing in that other context. Deantoni is truly a one of a kind drummer.
    You should do other The Mars Volta drummers, Thomas Pridgen and Jon Theodore (now playing with Queens of the Stone Age).

    Great drummer!! Love Mars Volta and Omar's projects. I recommend Jimmy Chamberlain from The Smashing Pumpkins, his performance of Silverfuck is legendary, I GUARANTEE you would love it. Very jazz influenced drumming but heavy song.

    He's one of my favourite metal drummers, now with Megadeth, but I love his stuff with Soilwork. He's not as extreme or super technical as many you have done, but I love his playing.

    Maybe some love and a review for the dearly departed William Rieflin? He had a storied career with Ministry/Revco then REM, and King Crimson. He is practically a drum machine. A greater time keeper one will never find.

    Garret, you should check Dee-Ant-tony out in a band from the '90's called Kudu. They were AMAZING mix of jazz, soul, funk, electronica. Check out the track Surprise.
