  • Is blood filling your screen? Are you pressing buttons you're prompted to kill a boss? Are meaningless numbers interrupting your gameplay? Did you just buy a gold-plated bunch of pixels for $10? Chances are you're playing a modern game. And they're beginning to piss me off.
    Find out what are the top annoyances you face whenever you load up a game these days.

    The thing that annoys me more than anything else is unlocks. I'm sick of every game locking 95% of the fun stuff until I dump dozens of hours into it.

    Agreed with mostly everything here especially dynamic cutscenes, hand holding, bloody screen, DLC, and QTEs.

    This one I found a little perplexing myself. But I remember that if manuals were available only online I'd print them out on full A4 size paper, wasting more trees in the process. I know other people that do the same. A small manual outlining how to play the game is all I really want and amazingly all the Harry Potter manuals did exactly that.

  • @MrSnuggleduck
    @MrSnuggleduck  12 років тому

    Absolutely. Metal Gear games have such great re-playability that when I'm going for the titles like Big Boss you pretty much have to skip them stay within the time constraints. I actually ended up panicking because I didn't have Meryl's frequency which was on the back of the game box.

  • @doomfan12345

    I like dynamic cut scenes, but you make a credible point, for those who could care less about the story, all it does it interrupt gameplay and waste time; though there may be some games out there that mix the gameplay in, I've just been yet to find them.

    In Sonic Unleashed and Generations the motion blur was made pretty nicely - only ceirtain things cause a blur, like Sonic quick-stepping or Classic Sonic's legs while running fast. That looks nice and does not make me feel sick at all.

  • @Shipwright1918

    I'm firmly of the belief that most of the good games are the older ones, and it's a rare thing indeed to find a modern game that can hold a candle to greats like Asteroids, Super Mario Bros, Sonic, Zelda, and of course, Pac Man.
    No DLC, no overbearing piracy regs, it's just you vs the mooks or the high score chart. Video, pinball, it's all good in retrogaming, 'nuff said.

  • @MrSnuggleduck
    @MrSnuggleduck  12 років тому

    That's true. But I had to fiddle with all of the buttons to figure that out. I was wondering why there wasn't an option to disable them entirely. It's kind of like the Codec in the Metal Gear Solid series where I find myself sighing as it comes up and I hold my finger on the triangle button for 30 seconds until it finally goes away. "Snake try and remember some of the basics of CQC"

  • @GammaDX27
    @GammaDX27 12 років тому

    I can understand games giving you button prompts, because what's more annoying that performing an action thinking you're in the right position and having nothing happen?
    Being a PC gamer I'm actually surprised you didn't mention multi-platform game's lacking FOV options in their PC iterations. That can be a pretty big deal.
    Also, going back to cutscenes, one thing that really makes ME go WTF is PER-RENDERED cutscenes being used FREQUENTLY in a game...current-gen engines can't be that limited!

  • @ProkoLokor
    @ProkoLokor 12 років тому

    About the manuals - I want to add something about Sonic Generations. I noticed that in the USA they got a really shitty 4 pages long manual. And yet, here in Europe (Poland, probably a UK import) I got a pretty decent 22-pages long one! No kidding, it explains Characters, main menu, controls, hud, lives and rings, white space, acts, challenge acts and more!

  • @Twotwentytwoproductions

    Atlus still cares about manuals. The manual for Catherine is 23 pages long (per language) and is completely in color.

  • @MrSnuggleduck
    @MrSnuggleduck  12 років тому

    I agree about that. The numbers in your face thing mostly refers to getting leveled up in games rather than some score you get for the stage. I was playing Battlefield 3 and I found it a little annoying that all of the contributions were being listed. And then they were listed again at the end of a map. So why not just have the latter?

  • @351831Bauce
    @351831Bauce 8 років тому

    Very good list although I would add mandatory turret sections where you get shot from all sides and cliffhanger endings (aka you better buy our next game if you want the actual ending).

    Yeah. Video games used to be so awesome back then. There are only a few modern games I know that still sticks to its roots. Two of them I already bought for the PS3 a day ago. Demon's Souls (Hack'n Slash) and Bodycount (Run'n Gun FPS). At least Bodycount is like a fast paced run'n gun type of gameplay. I rarely ADS in that game, there is no need too.

    Motion blur doesn't make it more realistic. It just makes it more cinematic as motion blur is a product of the nature of film equipment. Something we don't have to deal with in a completely computer generated environment. That's why I believe every game should have the option to turn it off and I know that motion blur is one of those things I turn off immediately when I do a first time set up and configuration.
    It's most unfortunate that console games routinely forget to give the player options like that.

  • @MrSnuggleduck
    @MrSnuggleduck  12 років тому

    Love Demon's Souls. It was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. And one of the greatest parts about it is that the community make their own hints and leave them in the game world instead of the developers. My ass still gets kicked constantly by some of the bosses.

    This is funny because I was actually going to put it in the video to demonstrate that they'll put it in a game like Catherine which is mainly comedic but not a super serious Western game. But I'm embarrassed about letting people know I own Catherine (even though it's a pretty funny game)

    - online only/always connected DRM
    - escort missions
    - boss attacks that leave you with 1HP
    - boss attacks that are designed to be 1 hit KO
    - that point in EVERY RPG where you must "farm" for experience in order to progress. At no point in any single player RPG should anyone have to do this, it takes too much away from the game and turns the game into a chore than something to sit down and have fun with
    - repetitive gameplay
    - silent protagonist but still somehow interacts with other NPC's

    Oh btw, you should really play NecroVision, it's a FPS made by former People Can Fly producers, and to me at least it's more of an actual PainKiller evolution then BulletStorm ever was, for instances, NV has a kill combo system but it's integrated in the gameplay, so the more combos you do the more rage you fill (rage grants you with elemental supernatural passives), while the combos in BS felt very frustrating to me due to being mostly a way to unlock everything the game has to unlock.

    i remember playing quake 3 arena and being a noob in front of other players, and after a few months later getting real experience by playing the game a lot and getting really good at the game and memorizing the maps and where the weapons are without dumb XP systems limiting what weapons you are aloud to use because you are low level, and then other players start beating the crap out of you just because you are low level. WTF happened with something called actual skill in games today.

  • @vtastek

    I'ts not motion blur what makes you dizzy, it's the really low FoV consoles have, some of them are around 65 when you need something like 90 or more but having a higher FoV requires more graphics power and they have to stick with 65 so they render less stuff, the bad thing goes to pc gamers when we sometimes can't change that value.
    Game nowadays have become more casual, "press this" "do that" "go there" and developers think "let's add a shit load of lens flare and bloom" *cough*Halo 4*Cough*

    My opinion is mixed. I tend to look at games as both a form of entertainment and as an artform, so when they try to do the cinematic stuff, I can appreciate it if it's done right. QTE can be VERY hit or miss. I'll accept them in adventure games (Heavy Rain would be really weird without it), but most action games really just tack it on.
    I actually don't mind motion blur, sometimes movement looks a little too unnatural without it, which can be kinda weird (at least in single-player games).

    Dynamic cut scenes work in half life and metro 2033 because it's about immersion. Gears of war? Not so much, shut up Marcus, you're not solid snake. Bloody screen doesn't seem to bother me in bf3, maybe because it's not that obtrusive or maybe the game just drums into you that you're terrible at shooting when you're eating bullets. Manuals though...that does upset me, does anyone remember the combat flight sim manual, pretty large book.

    You are very nostalgic and I see why, back ten or twenty years ago it was all about gameplay, making games fun and extremely challenging although I think you need to recognise that in the modern era games have become more about the story they tell rather then the gameplay experience, yes it's a huge aspect and of course some do a fantastic blend of both but most games centre around either A or B, I like your reviews but don't you think that sometimes you nostalgia clouds your judgment?
