  • Babymetal and Poppy are two of metal's most interesting artists: but what does their success say about metal fans?
    * Why Babymetal's "kawaii metal" gimmick works so well with songs like "Karate" and "Gimmie Chocolate"
    * How Poppy transitioned from her art videos to songs like "I'm Poppy" and her most recent album "I Disagree" on Sumerian Records
    * The 4 types of gimmicky, image-driven metal bands like Kiss, Gwar, Steel Panther, Slipknot, Behemoth, Ghost and Marilyn Manson

@@galaxykidM5 I hear you, I''ve not too old yet, but my musical taste since I was knee high to a grasshoper has always been skilled groups, artist(s) or songs (from 60s too now) in rock metal, heavy metal, hard rock, prog-rock etc.
I haven't yet found that level of vibe from a Babymetal song yet, sorry, to me they feel simple, perhaps they're too pop-ish. Don't misunderstand me, I know they've come a long way and faced some seriously dark times and do deserve to do well and continue to improve for their fans and themselves, great! I do not either critiscise their spirit, drive or stamina for performance.
They sound, so far I've heard, for me, is just not as emotively slick enough, a complex of many melodies, a mix of hardrock, metal, rock etc, switching seemlessly between 60 years of electric guitar music influence twisted together with proper lyrics, sorry, thats where Band-Maid slay them, for me.
If I want J-Pop, I'll listen to Perfume instead (although theiy're more like reborn E17 & Petshop Boys in a female Japanese form), - damn, I'm being almost as blinkered as Finn 'Jaded-Punk'.
I also like in additon to Band-Maid.. Drop's ('Kowashite' [Destroy] is excellent), Stereopony, The Brilliant Green, JINN (her 'Mugen no Hikari' [Dreamy Light] is a great song/pv, also she looks like a Japanese 'Sussie Perry'), Kabat, Uniklubi, FLOW, Daniel Jakubovic, Jimmy Hendrix, Shamisen Girls in Tokyo, Poets Of The Fall, The Rolling Stones, Wagakki Band, Madness, Enochian Theory, Dir en Grey, Gn'R, Yello, Aerosmith, SuG, Eluveitie, Robert Plant, Shinedown, Kotoko, Queen, John Fogerty, Stabbing Westward/The Dreaming, The Waterboys, Alice-9, Dire Straits, Muse, The Cybertronic Spree, Nothing's Carved In Stone, Sting & Police, Don Johnson Big Band, Die Antwoord, Veremiy, Hitomi Takahashi, Rammstein, Batmetal, Chur, Dethklok, The HU, etc.
...and still so very very more - currently I have rock, metal, heavy metal in 17 languages, although mostly in 4, even if I can only speak bits in 3 1/2 others apart from fluent only in English.
I've been a fan of anime since '82, I have a good grasp of cultural only Janapese jokes, and the mistakes between translations/contexts in subs and dubs (I don't care which if its acted/directed well).
Forgive my long wall of text, and for not being a Babymetal fan - at least I gave better reason than the channel hosts pathetic attempt - maybe his Vietnamiese family connections suffered at the hands of the Imperialist Army during Indochina's occupation; the IJA tended to be the crazier nationalistic zealously acting of the Imperial Japanese Forces/ArmedServices.

The reason I like Babymetal is because they're positive. I grew up on death and black metal music, but I got sick and tired of the negative message so I stopped listening to it. I really thought the negativity in the music I was listening to affected my mental health and daily life. It made me a more aggressive person. When I heard Babymetal I was so refreshed. I always liked metal music just hated the negative message. Babymetal has a positive message, high energy, and great metal music. They were rated #10 best metal band of all time on latest metal hammer magazine. I think they're going to become very popular across the world. Just my opinion.
Also, I was right next to stage at Babymetal concert and lead singer doesn't lipsync. I could hear her singing. If you watch an official live concert you can tell she doesn't lipsync. They also have studio monitor recordings of her voice separated from the live mix. Maybe you think that because in some videos I think they overlay the studio track over the recording which I think is unnecessary. They are great live. Better than studio in my opinion.
I think some men are just too afraid to like it because it may make them not feel so masculine. So funny to me. Being worried about your masculinity is the most unmasculine thing you could do. A guy must be so sensitive to be so obsessed with his masculinity.
If anything what I think Babymetal reveals is that people like metal. They just don't always like growling and angry or negative messages.

You said you are "pretty sure" Babymetal lip syncs, but based on what? Not live footage, obviously. You said they sound "djenty", and yes they have songs that do--but one of the great, but possibly divisive, things about this band is that they really pay homage to many sub-genres: power metal, pagan metal, prog, and so much more. I've seen them live and the Kami band is so good to pull off all of these sub-genres in one show--very versatile musicians. But saying they're just a djenty band who lip syncs show you probably watched the music videos for 'Karate' and 'Gimme Chocolate' and that's it. They are definitely not a band for everybody; I have played them for many people with great taste in music and had them tell me BM is too weird for them. But if you're going to make a video this long "explaining" what Babymetal tells us about the metal community, spend more time actually listening them to them.

  • @ru1n_singzzzie13

Now I'm not gonna roast you, I'm just gonna clarify some stuff.
Babymetal did lip sync during live shows between the years 2011 and 2013 because they were a very new group at the time and had very little known presence. They also did not have any live instruments from 2011 to 2013.
From 2014 onwards tho, babymetal performed everything live, instruments played by the kamiband and lead vocals sung by Su-Metal. I will admit that the two backup singers/dancers did lip sync even beyond 2014 but that's purely down to the sheer amount of choreography. They did have moments tho where the backup vocals/dancers would sing live if the choreography was less intense. Babymetal became popular internationally after their first big performance of doing everything live(vocals and instruments) at sonisphere festival(UK) in 2014, a festival with metalheads waiting for ghost and Iron maiden to perform and babymetal managed to win those people through their music. You have been replying to people saying that babymetal fans are sensitive, but I would think that any fan base would tell someone off, if they heard information about their favorite band that was actually false( ie, you saying that they don't sing or play instruments live). I don't think it helps your case either when someone says that they don't lip sync and then you ask that person, "how do you know", mate, you could just type babymetal live on UA-cam and watch a fan cam of them performing and tell it easily like that. It seemed like in some comments, you were taking the piss or trolling some people.
Now away from the topic of people roasting you:
I don't think babymetal is a gimmick anymore due to the simple case of longevity. In music, the gimmick will attract attention but if the music behind the gimmick isn't good, it won't last long. I got into babymetal due to the fact that they were a genuine band that tried something new and had actual good music to them. Whilst they do have songs which are generic sounding, they do also have very metal songs that have a dark tone to them with deep lyrics and funny enough a happy sounding song about playing hide and seek with a demon. You probably don't like the band which is fine, everyone has their own likings. Cheers👍🏾

@@errorys4183 Diagree. I guess these guys, some of which are the biggest acts in music history are gimicks also since they didn't write their own songs: Elvis Presley, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Marvin Gaye, Rihanna and probably 70-80% of Hip Hop and most of Country artists. Do we call an actor who doesn't write the story a gimick? Now I am a musician and songwriter myself but I do understand that how good a song is that I write depends on who is going to perform it. For example, Hurt written by Trent Reznor was a ok song but when performed by Johnny Cash it became a great song. Would it be cooler if BABYMETAL wrote their own songs, yes. But you have to remember we are talking about teenage girls here.

Personally, I HIGHLY disagree about Babymetal, they're very musically diverse, the musicians are great, and Suzuka is extremely talented. I agree that there is probably a heavy reliance on the kawaii gimmick, but they're putting out real music and doing it extremely well. Not to mention they've been at it for a decade now and only getting bigger, drawing huge crowds, and climbing the charts everywhere with every release. And also apparently you said she lip syncs, I didn't catch that, but she absolutely does not. Perhaps very early on, but look at any live performance after like 2012 or so, you can tell her voice has matured, and there's one performance of karate I remember where you can hear her voice quiver slightly as she's jumping. I'm sorry but that's absolute bullshit. Still a fan of the channel overall, just think you got that one objectively wrong. I feel like you only listened to the 2 songs shown in the video, and we can agree to disagree about the music itself, but some things said here are factual errors outright.

This is one of the most misinformation spreading and "let's just hate on something that's different because I'm to lazy to do research" videos I've seen in a long time. Taste is taste and subjective and I totally respect that. But you saying they lip sync or everything is just a gimmick is just bullshit. Suzuka, the lead singer of BABYMETAL, never lip synced. Even when she had a playback track in the first few shows with their "mother group" she sang over it. And she was 12/13 at the time and performed in front of 200 people because nobody knew them. There are even videos of her when she was 9 or 10 years old and could sing better then than most other vocalists who sell millions of CDs for years now.
You should do a little research before posting a 15 minute video on a channel with over 200k subs. You could also do some research on their backing band and you'd see that these are some badass musicians who played with Marty Friedman and other big ones. There are even live performances of the Kami Band members together, solo or in other bands on UA-cam, but it seems like you can create videos but not watch them, based on what you're saying. I don't think that guys like Rob Halford (who performed with them and called them the future of metal), Herman Li & Sam Totman (who co-wrote one of their tracks), Corey Taylor (who wanted a cameo of them for his first solo song and even said he's a fan in interviews), Metallica (who openly praised them at the beginning of their careers) and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (who did several shows with them and even played with them on stage), just to name a few, would support them like they do if anything you said is true.
Another thing, everyone who says they are an "idol group" should do some research on what an Idol is first. They are as far removed from the Idol business you can get as a female act in Japan who has roots in J-Pop.

I’m a huge extreme metal fan. Black metal and death metal primarily. And to me metal is about the music and the show is about the shared experience. When you’re at a show and there is the push and pull of the energy of the crowd and the energy of the band, it’s something metal has more than any other genre.
I also really like BabyMetal and Poppy. Why? Because they are creative as hell. I’m glad to see you giving poppy some props. She’s hugely creative and doing some very cool things.
I do think you’ve sold BabyMetal short though. They have such a die hard fan base not just because of the gimmick, but because they’ve been out there grinding it out for coming up on 10 years now. They’ve opened for major acts like Metallica and Judas Priest and have kept pushing and learning and getting better.
They certainly have a gimmick, but it’s not just the gimmick that have gotten them to where they are. It’s because they are just so damn good. Especially lead vocal Suzuka Nakamoto. Vocally what she is able to do is phenomenal, the control, power, diction, clarity, all of it. She’s a once in a generation talent. Without her, even with the best gimmick, they would have gone nowhere. And yes they absolutely sing everything live. There is a great clip of Su messing up and Moa laughing into a hot mic. Their music videos are often live footage with the album audio overlaid.
I’ve been to two BabyMetal shows and they are like a blowtorch to the face. Just an insane amount of energy. And they are MUCH heavier live than on the album. It’s a straight up in your face metal show. Give em a real chance. They are metal af, just a different spin on it.

The girls can't be matched for pure energy on stage and their gimmick is basically that they are young girls in what is seen as a hairy metalers world. Their songs range from Karate, the example given, to the Road of resistance, from No rain, no rainbow to BMC, the difference of styles is just mind-boggling. I completely disagree with the summary here. I would class BM as entertainers, but not in sense of this video. when Babymetal was first created, the lead Su-metal was 12. now she’s 22. listening to ANY of Babymetal’s live performances from the last 2 years shows that Su is a powerhouse of a vocalist and she has grown into her voice marvelously. she does not sound like the same j-pop vocalist she was a decade ago. their new album metal galaxy shows Su and Babymetal’s evolution away from j-pop and experimentation with other metal genres and other music genres in general. even listening to Babymetal perform their old songs live now, it’s clear they’ve changed. songs like doki doki morning, ijime dame zettai, and even karate sound totally different now, Su no longer sounds like a young j-pop vocalist. taking personal taste for the music out of it, I’m extremely disappointed in how short you sold Babymetal and Su. in a video where you were supposed to explain the success of the group, you failed to show the talent they truly possess in favor of writing them off as “standard j-pop vocals.”

This is all speculation on my part, but I think Babymetal appeals to girls because they present themselves as feminine but not sexualized. Which is why I cringed a bit at that "harem anime" line. While there are gross neckbeards that fetishize the girls in the band, I see these girls as embracing de-sexualized femininity. Admittedly, it's been a while since I've listened to them, or primarily metal, so I'm not sure how much validity there is to my following statements. My username makes it obvious that I listen to primarily goth music, but I still like a bit of metal.
Based on my observations, there seems to be a bit of a false dichotomy for female-fronted metal bands. They either have to be one of two things, save for an occasional outlier. The first option is to be "one of the guys," which is fine if that's how you naturally are, but that can lead to a toxic "not like the other girls" mentality. One that shuns everything feminine in fear of not being taken seriously, and puts down other girls for enjoying girly things. Again, it's perfectly fine to not enjoy traditionally feminine things, as long as you don't put down other girls in order to elevate yourself as superior.
The second option is to go for sex appeal. I don't think I need to explain that one. You have to be attractive in order for some male metalheads/music producers to even consider you, but the women will often be dismissed anyway by those same people. Going for the metal-queen sex goddess approach can be empowering if the woman in question wants that, but it can be limiting if your only options in order to succeed in metal are to go for sex appeal, or to reject femininity entirely. This is why I think Babymetal appeals to girls with their frilly, modest costumes and love of the cutesy, girly motifs without the oversexualization. The only other examples I can think of that reject that dichotomy are maybe some women in symphonic metal, which often embraces a classic, elegant femininity. Again, this is speculation based on my observations.

Very well said. Totally agree. Women in metal historically seem to be overall be very sexualized or take on many masculine traits. And that’s totally ok if that’s how they choose to present themselves. BabyMetal is all about the power of being feminine without being sexualized and I find that very refreshing.
They aren’t alone though, many of the women in metal are shedding the old tropes and stereotypes and just doing their own thing. And I think it’s great to see metal being a genre of more than just pissed off white guys (meant in a tongue in cheek way) and see it being more representative of a broader audience. Bands like Jinjer and Aephanemer are showing that a female lead doesn’t make it a gimmick.

Babymetal videos, even the live ones taken from official blu-rays, can appear to be lip-sync'd. That's because they would layer the studio version of the song over the live vocals for the blu-ray. But Su sings live, and it's great. Also, saying Babymetal doesn't play their own instruments? Babymetal consists of the Kami band and the 3 girls. It's not just the girls. And the Kami band certainly plays their instruments live and on the albums. And don't get the Kami band confused with the Baby Bones mime band in some of their live shows. They were used early on when BM was first getting started. Watch the Legend 1997 show. Mime band for first part, then the real Kami band for the 5-song encore.

I think part of the problem with pop compared to metal is that the music is bland to ok and the images aren't even that distinct. Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga are the only pop artists that really have distinct images imo. For example, Drake could be easily confused with DJ Kahled in terms of image and music. It baffles me that pop artists with bland images and bland music could be as successful as they are and confusion leads to spite if left unchecked.

Just found babymetal during quarantine and now I'm kind of obsessed, making my way through their catalog. I grew up listening to tool, deftones, lamb of god and the like. Gimmick or not, what I think babymetal does brilliantly is best described as "contrast" or "juxtaposition." A lot of gimmicks metal bands use just match or reinforce the heavy nature of the music, ie scary masks and a super aggressive stage presence. Babymetal uses contrast between the cuteness of the girls singing and dancing with the heavy and dark tones and themes of the oftentimes very technical metal music. Not to mention their energy and theatrics at live events, where each member gives 1,000 percent. Su is a phenomenal vocalist, pop or otherwise, Yui and Moa complement her perfectly, and once they permanently incorporated the insanely talented kamiband (rip mikio 😢) their music, style, and overall talent was just solidified in my humble opinion. Babymetal singlehandedly reinvigorated the metal genre for me, but once again, just my humble opinion. 🤘

I mean, i guess it's completely normal to think after listening to some songs, you kind of know what group this is, but it couldn't be more wrong in BMs case. With the opinions andexplanations you gave you can already tell that you haven't heard most of their songs (especially the heavy ones) and definitely haven't watch any recent stuff. But given that in Poppys case you especially mention her more recent sound change, i don't understand why you haven't taken BM changes into account. They are not the small, cute little girls try metal group from their very early days. With the last album and the tour around it they showed how much they have matured.
