I thought I was the only person that felt this way wow! Especially the talking part, one time I was asked what size I wanted for a snow cone, and there was the really big size called “the king size” I said “Can I get a king size” and I kid you not, I had to repeat it 4 TIMES!! And I said “king” louder and louder but I was still not loud enough ☠️ the lady poked her head out with her hand over her ear just so she could hear me, Ngl I died from embarrassment that day…

it’s bad when you have low self esteem too, because like the whole idea of feeling like you have a little bit of power over someone because they have to give u what u want makes me uncomfortable. like, “I know it’s your job, but why are You the one serving Me? you don’t have to do that! I don’t deserve you spending time and energy on me! I am but an a peasant in your midst!” Like snejidjdjd I AM LITERALLY THE ONE PAYING THEM.

It's awesome that you found a way that works for you! I've worked many years of food service, and yeah people that write down their order very specifically are way easier! You can just scan through it and be sure you didn't miss anything as the worker, and it's easier than having to ask people to repeat themselves if they talk too fast, too quiet etc. My wife does this sometimes or has me order for her when she doesn't feel well.

i used to have social anxiety but its far better after I learned that people will immediatly forget about me the second i leave their eye sight, unless i do something super out of the ordinary (which I do a lot actually, i cannot be contained) and when that happens i just tell myself "they are dumb and i dont listen to the opinions of dumb people" all this falls out the window when im trying to make a good impression on people who are looking to hire me for a job when that happens i just hope for the best.

Whether it's considered rude or not by the employee taking the order shouldn't matter, there's a small but very real chance the one placing the order could be mute, so you're not justified... it should be normalized too, to avoid being unintentionally being rude to the customer ☺️👍

Same. I was at a Safeway deli when visiting my dad in Alaska for the summer. I ordered some chicken tenders and I had the money ready to buy. Then the lady handed me the bag. And didn’t ask for anything back. I was so confused and nervous that I just left the Safeway with the chicken and never came back.

As someone in the hospitality industry, our job is to cater to our guests' needs and always strive to be inclusive. What you are asking isn't difficult for most people. However, some individuals may be dyslexic or struggle with reading-I have dyslexia myself but often use AI to help me read and write. Additionally, some people work in the service industry out of necessity and may not find joy in catering to everyone's needs-they are simply trying to survive. I believe that as long as you remain respectful and considerate, you will hopefully receive the same respect in return.

I think this idea is great!
But I would personally recommend using it to gain some confidence at first, and when you feel capable read what you wrote down instead of showing it, this way you can focus only on pronunciation.
I say this because I think facing your shortcomings is a way to feel stronger and more capable, so I wouldn't recommend only relying on avoiding something that's difficult when you can overcome it with the right process. This is just a suggestion obviously, we all got our demons to face and only we can chose how to deal with them.

this is so real when i was a teenager i once tried ordering something from a restaurant in my local mall which i remember specifically having from that specific place(it was a three cheese sandwich) but it wasn't there because every Big L Favourite is fated to disappear into the aether where Big L can't enjoy it because Big L is unfortunately not one with the aether. i got so embarrassed and had to order a caramel slice and like. they gave me SUCH a big one eating it actually made me feel kind of sick, but not entirely sick. i want to call that a Big L Big L but there was hardly any L to it, at least my food survived the return home. it usually doesn't.
anyway as an adult now(and a zombie, long story) i feel like ordering food would probably be pretty easy. i've died before, how bad can asking someone at a counter for lunch be? certainly not as bad as DYING, i don't think. anyway my voice's volume dropped like 10 decibals and also 10 octaves after i died so the volume thing will probably be much harder. these australian hooligans are LOUD. no respect for anybody. be ashamed, australians. ASHAMED! anyway i'm not exactly thrilled about having borderline terminator voice now because i am a trans woman and transitioning seems borderline impossible with my current situation, i don't have the dosh nor a job nor family who is willing to/can pay for hrt :(

  • @kirbycabbit

Quick note! I have diagnosed GAD [Generalized Anxiety Disorder] and work over the counter fast food! We do get some people that have notes written down for orders either from being mute or a language barrier, and the notes do work! All I'd recommend for that is you should kinda memorize the order of the food on the counters! If it's not in order it's still doable, just a bit risky of a small stumble like, forgetting to put lettuce on the order because it was written too early on the note when it's at the end of the line. Most over the counter locations should have the order of their lines the same but just in case, be sure to have a few looks at the counter to analyze what's where.

I pick what I want ahead of time through the menu online (both for restaurants and café’s/bubble tea places) (cause I’m indecisive) I even pick a back up item if they don’t have it or missing something to make it (which has happened), I’ll order verbally if I can but sometimes I freeze up and can’t speak so I use the text method (I always make a note ahead of time in case I freeze up cause I never know when it’s going to happen)

Out of everyone I’ve seen work there not many of them outright called me a regular (maybe 3 or 4 at most),but all of them working there currently should know I’m pretty quiet

No way ordering with your phone is rude, I don't see anything wrong with it. It's easy to understand and doesn't bring harm to anyone.
I don't have problems ordering food or stuff myself (unless idk how the process goes bc some places confuse me, that's when I ask my friends for institutions) but I use text when my throat hurts too much to speak. I usually either text my friend on WhatsApp and they respond verbally, or I write in the notes app/on a paper and show them. It's a lot like talking trough small letters in class so the teacher won't catch u

And I was looking through your videos and came across your first animation “im the man” and saw how your oc, your art style, everything has changed! I thought it might be fun for you to try and remaster it since someone commented how smooth it was and you replied with “its lazy”, why not give it a shot? I don’t think it’s necessarily rude to show someones phone about what you want to order, I think showing your phone in texts about what you want to oder is one of the most helpful things you can do, and this is coming from someone who used to work in food service. It’s the most convenient way to do so, and it helps to save so much time when ordering that, in the end of the day, I would prefer it if people just had pre-written texts to let me know what it is they want to order. In certain cases, you can’t really do so, such as when your’e in a drive through, or when you’re at a sit-in buffet.
I suffer from the same issue to where, I don’t like to be loud, and I don’t like to speak with an outward voice, to where people people end up not being able to hear me very well. As a matter a fact, that was a big thing I suffered from years ago, first day on the job, to which I ended up adapting from with… severing degrees of success? Sometimes I don’t know how loud you can be inside and outside, so sometimes I end up being to high and to low, vocal wise, depending on the situation.
Now in days, because of my personal situation, the last time I’ve ever went out was summer of last year for my birthday, and that was to eat with family. I’m hoping in the future it changes, but I’ve had enough life and work experience to know that, people that work in food are just, people, like me and you, making ends meet, and the more convenient you can make their lives work, the better.
This is to say that: when you use the text method of ordering, it’s how you take out a message and perceive said message. I can tell you, there’s a lot of old/grumpy people, that are so stubborn, that they’ll never accept your order through said method, and would rather have you talk face to face, and will literally shut the door or walk away in front of your face if you order that way, and when speaking vice versa, if they were to do so, they get very grumpy and confrontational. Neither of which I would ever want to encounter again, because “Oh, you messed up my food” and then they throw food at me, like how one time I worked at a smoothie restaurant, and a old guy threw his smoothie at me.
Idk, some people just shouldn’t be going out when they have that kind of mentality when going out. People don’t owe you something when they’re making your food, you just go out, eat, and that’s it. You should only have that viewpoint where you get food poisoning, or something equally as harmful, but not in an, overall general sense, where someone who’s young makes your food wrong and then you throw the food in their face; that actually makes them less likely to want to meet you in the same establishment out of fear of the same thing happening to them again.
I do overall, think the text method is the best method, it just depends on the scenario you’re in*.

The only time I eat out is when I go to subway, which is not too often, and I always get the same thing and say it in the same order, so I don't mess up. This was very helpful though, thank you!

i think i fall in the middle of this, i prefer not to talk and avoid things like this. but if i really feel like i need to or should talk for situations like this i do. also i deeply relate to the people not hearing me part😭. people never hear me when i talk and it’s so embarrassing but i am slowly getting better with it over time ❤️‍🩹.
