I first time I saw you repair a board you were half drunk and still did better than the genius bar. It's nice to see you're still at it, refining your skills and teaching us how to fix our Macs
@Jim Allen Yeah, but the video title gives the whole thing away, so if anyone was taken in by the image, they were alerted to their naivete before they clicked. :) I'm not disappointed that I clicked in the least bit. :)
I had to get my phone's charge port replace recently, thankfully I have an easy to repair phone so it didn't take long. This'll be good to watch to see how it works.
Right to repair will save our future and our landfills. Electronics recycling isn’t easy for the everyday consumer. With right to repair it will be easier to recycle.
Even normal recycling is a problem - I went to local recycling center and guess what - they have to have special license to let you take any electronics from recycle bins. You can take whatever else (bicycles, chairs, wood, ..., you name it), but not electronics :( The laws and regulation in this area is horrendous, causing the landfills to pile up useful replacement parts...
What's funny is how big companies fool people into thinking their eco packaging is actually saving the environment, when most of the electronics crap people throw away and "recycle" ends up in landfills or in Africa or some other third world country with some kid stripping down the board for it's precious metals.
Paul always talks about using “enough” flux but clearly Louis knows the right amount because I’ve never seen that happen at 32:50 before when the PROPER amount of flux is applied 😂
"the shield doesn't serve a purpose" uh yes it does it's shielding it is for certifications on EM emissions it's not to make it harder for you to repair it even though it does make it harder but that is not it's purpose. (do not spread falsehoods )
My wick technique could’ve cleared them all with less than HALF as much wick. ;) First, don’t toss the wick that stops clearing holes. Cut it off then saturate it with solder from the upcoming holes without making any attempt to clear those yet. You actually don’t want those to be so clear that they are hard to conduct heat when you come back with clean wick and may even want to redistribute solder from the ones that still have an excess. Next, using fresh wick on the roll requires more wick than if you cut it since it flows up the roll and activates more wick than was needed. Cut a short fresh piece and work on the ones that are nearly clear. Once you have a few clear, move ahead and saturate it with solder like we did with the last piece. If any holes are blocked but too deep for the wick, drag some of that solder back over there. After doing that a couple times you might have one or two more holes to add solder to and use the tiniest bit of fresh wick. I use my solder-saturated wick to make mechanical and ground connections for other things all the time… like when I need to bridge all the grounds from a bundle of coaxial cables and make a fat part that won’t let the cable pull out of the connector/plug housing… or when I need to solder an upside-down shielded mini-DIN port to a ground plane and want my solder to anchor it to both sides of the board. Yeah, I routinely replace old RF modulators with mini-DIN video breakouts that line up with the old RF jack and then I need to make custom cables to plug into those mini-DINs. ;)
Please never stop doing repair vids, I know the political stuff and in particular cat videos attract more views, but I will always find the electronics repair stuff fascinating, and in a way its kinda like my own weird ASMR. :D
@@mhamma6560 or just do as the chinese show on their repair videos, touch it with a soldering iron and then bang the board against your desk so the solder falls out 😂
love the channel. could you help me with a puzzle? have you done/seen a retrofit magsafe conversion for the 1708? ill likely superglue the insert mag tabs in but im confident someone has done a more elegant retrofit design.
For me it’s just not the same when its not Louis doing the repairs whilst entertaining us with his charisma but hey, I get it, he’s got other things to do right now. Just hope he’ll do some of these again in the future.
Not even that. He's mentioned recently that he's barely done many repairs himself lately, and so is very much out of practice compared to his employees that are still doing it day to day. Yes, I agree Louis has a particular charm, but continuing the OG content of the channel is important too, particularly considering the intent (demonstration of board repairs).
I would never believe that something with such water damage would still work :) Nice repair - the through-hole was quite fidly, but at least I've learned how to clear through-hole pins :) Wick graveyard it is! :D
It's of no use for 99% of the board anyway, wick is already on the desk and works good. These desoldering guns have their uses, but macbook repair is not one of them. You get huge tips that make it easy to knock tiny components off, they take an eternity to heat up and don't have the thermal capacity to be used with a bigass multilayer board. If the shop specialized in retro computer repair, sure. Macbook, not so much.
usually no point in ultrasonicing board before repair, at best you just do an unnecessary UC cycle and at worst you erase all your hints or ruin a corroded connection that could've been restored with some flux and heat
Louis, Why even after your talk with Ben Heck, do you still say the software issue is bullshit? here's a link to the video ua-cam.com/video/9eSz0pmRKC4/v-deo.html
The slew of cold solder joints on the nearly-through hole part of this job caught my eye (along with one stray at 14:59.) The holes saw the heat; the pins didn't.
This is boring AF. The NYC is trash but imma too scared to actually set up a business else where because my, er, employees, yeah that's it, video are much more interesting. (lots of businesses find a way. Keep those unwilling to move in a repair depot of sorts while you build up a new crew elsewhere, plenty of ex-restaurant employees would love the opportunity to be trained in these skills I'm sure).

Right to repair will save our future and our landfills. Electronics recycling isn’t easy for the everyday consumer. With right to repair it will be easier to recycle.
Given that people also stop buying cheap crap electronics that are made to break and any repair beyond ecological sense.

So relaxing seeing a board repair
Much respect for how good you are at your job. Super smart man!
Paul always talks about using “enough” flux but clearly Louis knows the right amount because I’ve never seen that happen at 32:50 before when the PROPER amount of flux is applied 😂
For wicking through-holes, I usually put another strip of wick behind the board.
"do these keycaps look loose to you?" *DUMP*
That was golden.

Specifically, better shielding is required for full thunderbolt speeds.
That said, the charging port shouldn't be soldered in the first place 😬
