I lived on Beachwood Dr in the early eighties... hiked up to that sign and loved the views. I could also see it from my bedroom window. I loved my Hollywood days!
2:05 Thank you for positing that photo. That is a photo of the rock band Fleetwood Mac before Buckingham and Nicks joined the band. The guy in the red shirt is Bob Welch who wrote the classic Hyptonized. All the music before Buckingham and Nicks of FM is well worth checking out.
I used to live in West Hollywood in the early 90’s. A friend or two and I used to go running around the reservoir below the sign. One day I discovered one could run/hike up the side of the hills and on a narrow path that crested the top of them. The views were amazing on clear days: the LA basin on one side and the SF Valley on the other. Right next to this was the big sign and one could run over to it then (no big chain link fence like now) and climb up on it if one wanted to. I remember the back of the letters were covered in graffiti and kinda ratty up close.
As a Hollywood resident for nearly 20 years now I can’t explain the magic and hope that little sign on the hill gives to our city and all who come to see it. It’s a symbol of possibility. You forget it’s there until you look up and see it occasionally and remember wow I live in Hollywood.
... hey, neighbor! i live near the Scientology Celebrity Centre and living in Hollywood is AWESOME to me! looking North i see the HOLLYWOOD sign and looking Southeast i get to view Downtown Los Angeles.
@@lewstone5430 Totally. I was born in Hollywood and grew up in Beachwood Canyon and the sign is not remotely magical. It is not a work of art, or particularly beautiful or anything - it was put there by a real estate company to lure prospective home owners to the area, and that's all. The neighborhood itself is the magical part and it's been almost ruined in recent yeas by entitled, selfish tourists who ruin the peacefulness of the area. I'm glad I don't live up there any more because of them.
@@MothGirl007 i love to visit the sign after a trip to Universal Studios sometimes, but i don’t consider myself selfish or entitled. Please explain what that means to you, or what behavior they exhibit.
My first trip before moving to Hollywood my best friend and I climbed up from Sunset Blvd starting at the guitar center. A couple of young metal heads walking all the way to touch those letters clad in leather jackets on a hot June day. It is a steep climb although coming down was more sketchy. The symbolism that sign gives to the dreams brilliant
My family and I hiked up to the sign about 10 years ago. It’s an easy hike! That was my first time. Got some great pics. My movie-buff kids are so spoiled.
Hooray for Hollywood... that song is iconic and sung by Bing Crosby and it used to say Land on the end but it's got a legendary story about a death back in the early days of the movies 🎥
The HOLLYWOOD sign is the heirloom that for the last 100 years has been a reliable foundation, for Los Angeles teaching generations of Californians harmony, patience, balance, and luck... passed down generation after generation... I guess that makes the HOLLYWOOD sign, Los Angeles's official "Bonsai Tree."
I knew the lore before I moved to LA and yet you are right.. it is uplifting when you spy it from differing neighborhoods. I loved looking up from my hikes in the canyon to see it. I only lived in LA for two years and sadly a big regret was that I could never get my frisky dog to sit still for a portrait.
I had read the name of the housing community was named after a street in Chicago where underground film studios worked back when you had to be licensed by Edison to make films.
I remember back in the seventies reading about the disrepair the sign had fallen into at the time and how it read "HULLYWO D". It wasn't long after that I read there were plans to restore it.
Poor math. The sign is not 100. It is 45! In 1978 the sign was completely removed and rebuilt, smaller, all new and different materials, slightly different support footings. There is a 1978 Chamber press release substantiating the age of 45 years too.
A bit of elaboration about the donors of the sign in 1978. Terrence Donnelly, who published the Hollywood Independent Newspaper, contributed for the H. As mentioned, Alice Cooper donated for the first O, in memory of comedian Groucho Marx. Les Kelley of Kelley Blue Book did the first L. Gene Autry, the second L. Hugh Hefner, the Y. Andy Williams, the W. Italian movie producer Giovanni Mazza, the second O. Warner Bros. Records, the third O. And Dennis Lidtke, the D.
... check your FACTS . the HOLLYWOOD sign falls in the 90068 zip code area . the Los Feliz area falls in the 90027 zip code area. a FACT that can be EASILY Googled.

I used to see it from my apt. balcony when I was just 22 years young. A two bedrooms/two bathrooms which back in the early 80's was just $550.00 dollars rent, split between my roommate, I only paid $275.00 !! I have Google it and today the same place is $3,585.00 !!! After that, I bought a house up in the hills of the SILVERLAKE area and still have the view from my backyard facing west🤩

Hollywood has been out of decent story's for 30 years. Remember "The Sting"? It has been a while since the bedrock movie has been made. And no story has ever been better. Nowadays, it's baby food.
Such a simple thing, but it's become iconic.
I live in Silverlake, Los Angeles, we can see the Hollywood sign from our backyard. Our home was built in 1923. Everything was built at the same time.
Love Silverlake. Great vibrant area.
Hooray for Hollywood’s 100th birthday of the sign!

It's crazy to see the old video of old downtown Hollywood. Looks like was a beautiful city at one point.
Think about what that sign has overseen for the past 100 years...all of those movies and stars and dreams.

Why isn't the Hollywood sign illuminated at night? 🤔

I can see why that they wouldn't fully restore it to "Hollywoodland" but would be neat.
