With sword unsheathed,
Thy face aglow in fullest charge.
The man to stop Castilian might,
Whose words did rally men to fight,
who before battles did confess their sins aright!
6. O Sacral Warrior brave
The Holy Virgin's slave!
Thou doth inspireth all souls to virtue high,
In prayer thou waits,
For God, thou wages war!
Thy legend strikes the core of every soul that,
that seeketh truth forevermore.

7. Behold the battle cry!
As spears and arrows fly,
The armies clash, the sound is heard in Heaven, High!
The wind blows dust to fill the realm,
Thy sword dost strike with fearsome sound,
until thou dissapeared when struck unto the ground.
8. Thy captains searched for thee,
in vain most urgently,
But in the midst of blinding dust thou was not found.
"Oh Constable! Where has the valiant gone?
Tis thee that keeps us one,
To face a danger,
as great as this grand army strong!"

In prayer upon the knee,
With eyes ablaze and arms araised in cruciform!
"Lord Nuno! Rise and take the lead,
Do thou command! Our urgent plea."
"My son, for this I pray to God that I might see!"

With thy most valiant take their standard and their hope!
This day we shall not perish by the foe!
Who was upon the thresh-hold of taking,
Our Lady's chosen Portugal!"

renouned and glorious,
Thou founded peace
for thou wert ready for the war,
Yet thy age advanced in years,
Calming so much, Castilian fears,
which lied in wait for all thy praise to turn to tears!
12. In Eliatic brown,
In Carmel's Habit found
Yet in thy vows
there were conditions to be drawn,
For if Castile, shall rise to wage a war,
Thou shall anew, take sword and lead thy men to...
to crush the foe more than before!

13. Castilian heralds came
Inquiring of thy name
Thou claimed most readily to lead the armies might.
And for the proof for kings to know,
And that all doubt may cease to grow,
Thou pulled aside thy habit, showing armor bright!
14. And to the great chagrin,
Of whom Castile had sent,
Thou took a spear from thine own weapons on the wall,
And with thy strength surprised them all thou did affirm thy godly call when thou did hurl the spear into a distant wall!
15. And thus did end the scene,
The Castilian inquiry,
Which now resigned to leave in peace thy Portugal,
O man of peace, thy soul was made to soar,
Thy glory is assured! Oh holy Constable,
Truly thou art the Man of War!

Authors note:
As regards the spear incident in Verse 14 -
There are credible accounts of Saint Nuno throwing a spear in the manner related. Amongst others, this story is told by a Prince in our own days of the Noble House of Braganza, rooted in Saint Nuno's own lineage. His daughter Beatriz, married Afonso, son of King John I and founder of the House of Braganza.
