I was born in Hong Kong when it was still a British Colony and I still live in Hong Kong. I recalled many memories of my childhood by watching the film. Thank you Michael.
The quality of the film is fantastic. It's amazing to have such beautiful records of the life and tragedies of Hong Kong in the 50s.. Your work is really a commendable public service and a labour of love.
Michael, thank you so much for preserving memories of such an important historical era for the former British Crown colony of Hong Kong, her former subjects and posterity. I don't think many people nowadays in Hong Kong have seen colour footage about Hong Kong in the 50s or 60s. Nor would most of them remember what Hong Kong was like even if they have lived through such period of turmoil. I was born in Hong Kong in 1963 and am still a Hongkonger. I don't have many photographs of myself or anybody else taken in the 60s, and none of them was in colour. I don't have much recollection of what I looked like as a baby or a young boy or what Hong Kong was like in the 1960s. So thanks again Michael for bringing back some of my memories in the 60s through your film clips. I dearly hope you are still alive and kicking today and would remain well and healthy for years to come.
Amazing! My parents were born in 1948, so this is way before my time. Hong Kong looked very different by the time I was born. I am trying to imagine my parents being the very young children in this video, while the young men and women could have been my grandparents (born in the 1920s). Thank you for uploading! I really wished I can dive inside my monitor and experience the society that my parents saw in their childhood. Someone invent a time travel machine!
thank you so very much for your videos of Hong Kong. i am a Hong Konger born in the 90s, and i have always been fascinated by the history of my city. these videos are precious and an amazing way for me to connect to the years bygone!
This is amazing, I have to show this to my grandma, she is going to love it, it will bring back her memories of the old days. All your films are with great details and superb quality, thanks so much for sharing sir.
Great editing and music choice Michael. Also the footage of the devastating fire in the Shek Kip Mei squatters camp captures a moment in history that is all but forgotten.
I had been living in Hong Kong since l was born! But not your film so longer and older humble said these videos not only history but valuable similar with memory!Hong Kong Happy valley jockey club racecourse still running!Old China bank building still on Central near new HBSC headquarter !The most important recorded is Kwoloon peninsula Shek Kip Mei squatter big 🔥 a lot of people lost their homes!Perhaps memory like a dream so bring me home!
Parts of this film clip were shot later than 1953, Bridge on the River Kwai was released in 1957. (4.42) The major fire in Shijipmei 石硤尾大火 was on Christmas day December 1953 (窩仔上村 was one of the 6 villages burned to the ground 11.31 ).
Nicely preserved film. The second half depicts the difficult lives of the refugees. How ironic it was that the west and Japan made lives miserable for the mainland Chinese through centuries of invasion and colonisation, then pretended to be so kind to be charitable. Such is life and so called humankind.
Then, some still travelled using rickshaws, for perhaps a mere 20 cents HK. And school fee in a government run school was about $5 HKD ..... and the police force was very very corrupt. Oh well, how things have changed today especially for the HK police force.
I definitely noticed that! Pressed pause every few seconds in the video just to take a good look at everything. This was Hong Kong of my parents. Never experienced it, but certainly very interesting to me.

Glas to hear that my clips have revived your memories. I'm 89 years young, but still vibrant.
I am glad to hear that you are still vibrant. Your enthusiasm for footage making and contributions to humanity are admirable.

where was the government after the fire? I can’t see any officer, special the British officer c9me to the poor people.
@Well they took notice and started an extensive scheme to provide housing in newly built apartment buildings at reasonable rents.
