Awesome video!! Can’t wait to see you changing and trying the different strings on the electric guitar. Also a wish from me, I saw that you recently (2 years ago) did a video where you showed how to change string on an acoustic but I haven’t found a new one regarding the electric - the last one I believe was 11 years ago, so if you could, and have the time I think beginners like me would like to see how you change the string on the electric. A perfect timing would be if you showed us quickly how you do it when you’re testing the different strings - 2 birds in one! 😄

I use the plain D'addario 80/20 phosphore bronze. I play 1-3 hrs per day, and they last mayyybe 2 weeks. So I found it interesting that you said yours last about a week. I thought it was just me. 🤣 I took your advice from a video you did awhile back on rut busting. I ended up with a new Fender dreadnaught Paramount AND a new Fender Stratocaster! Thank you very much! Great advice! 😁

The. XS sounded better for me using the pic, and they brought out the midrange better while fingerstrumming.. The XT’s were slightly more balanced- not quite as bright- for the rest. Now I can’t wait to wear down the Elixers on my acoustics! Beautiful pieces used to showcase the strings! Beautiful.

I did like B the most... so I'm a uncoated strings guy too..... but realized I did not catch the transition to C when looking away, so I guess I gotta give those a try, especially considering your argument regarding not playing a guitar for a while (acoustics are a side job to my electrics).

  • @nixternal

I absolutely love the XS 12/53 on mine. They sound great, and they last me forever. I almost got a full year out of my last set, and that is roughly an average of an hour a day of playing. They really didn't tarnish at all until the last couple of months, they started tiger striping. Sliding & bends with XS feel so much nicer as well. Before XS I tried the XT but they weren't worth it, as they would die in a little over a month for me. They lasted only slightly longer than the uncoated/untreated strings. Man, your acoustic sounds so freakin' beautiful. I got to play one recently at Chicago Music Exchange. WOW is all i could say.

I just put a set of black beauties on my acoustic. They sound tinny but got a nice full sound on my little seagul, also nabbed a roadie 3 tuner to mess around with alternate tunes (also makes changing strings a breeze😉)Thanks for the fantastic videos!! You’ve really helped this old man!! God bless

I've been using XT's for most of the last couple of years. I did do one change of phospher bronze in there as a comparison. I get a longer "freshly changed shimmer" period. (My daughter says freshly changed strings sound more "zummy"), and a much, much longer nicely playable period. Generally, I leave them on 2-2 1/2 times as long, which pays for the extra cost, and means I don't have to change strings anywhere near as often.
    My two cents.

The XT's are a very unique sounding string. They have more lows and highs and a bump in upper mids compared to other strings and will remove the boxy sound from a small guitar. I've generally had great results with them. The uncoated strings and XS's sound pretty close.
If you have a maple acoustic, DR Veritas are usually the best strings. They have some rich overtones in the mids that really shine with most maple guitars

for me it was the order A, C, B, D from best to worst sounding.
I felt set D was a little less loud than the others and I tend to rate less loud as less good. But as those were the used ones they were probably a ljttle less loud.
I got wrong on the uncoated ones which either shows my headphones couldn't transport the difference or the coated ones are really quite close to the uncoated string. Maybe also because I normally use coated strings so I'm used more to that sound.
All in all, i liked the video and comparision. and I will give the D'Addario coated strings a try.

Brighter is not not necessarily better. At the moment, I actually prefer the sound of nylon over steel. I think my ear is just tired of the cutting brightness of steel after so many years of listening to steel. Everything sounds different. Different sounds for different tastes and applications.

  • @SherwinGooch

For my own reference while listening (and maybe others are as forgetful as I am:)
    Test - Strings
    A - D'Addario XS coated strings
B - Plain (uncoated) BRAND NEW phosphor-bronze strings
C - D'Addario XT coated strings (new product)
    D - Old dead strings*
*Old dead strings (D) were recorded using mic inside guitar + studio mics. All others (A,B,C) are recorded using only studio mics (mic hidden in hat + Hugh Padgham's Neumann U87.)
If anyone knows, it would be nice to know what models of mics the hat and guitar mics are, approximately how the mix was set for the 2- and 3-mic recordings, and which Logic plug-ins modified the recorded signal.
If I had my druthers, I would prefer to have had just the unmodified U87 used for everything. I know it's hard to get out of the habit of trying to make things sound good, but when comparing elements of production, it would be less confusing if you would minimize the influences on the test audio.
Great work! I know this was an incredibly larger amount of work than it appears or that people imagine or appreciate. We really need more simple comparisons like this of various techniques and equipment. It is surprisingly easy to hear the differences in these A vs B comparison tests. Thanks, again!

Buy an inexpensive Alice splittable hex-ended string winder which can be used with a Bosch IXO for mega quick effortless string changes or faster manually than these ubiquitious basic things Justin is using.
