    I spent thousands of hours on D8 H and K, D8 L, and D9Ns. Each is a step up from the other. The D9N would overheat if pushed hard. For 911 WTC duty at Fresh Kills Landfill. I got a brand new D9 R with single ripper, paddle shifter controls, extra heavy duty bottom with rock guards front and rear, and auxiliary side mount transmission cooler. Super powerful, smooth, balanced, comfortable machine. That was impossible to overheat. Cool in the summer, hot in the winter. Nothing like a brand new machine with yellow tracks and plastic on the seats. It could easily outwork both the 8H and 9N combined. My favorite large dozer. IUOE Local 15 (38 yrs ret)

    I love those slow turning D353 enigines over the 3408 engine. Nice sound to them. Super torque also with those long connecting rods and bigger pistons

    Nothing compared to the ole D9 no electronics simple and gets the job done and the sound of the CAT purring and turbo whistle doesn't get any better.

    nice video, thank you. I have an 85 year old father in law that has 2 D6's -1953 and 1956 year models, occasionally he will bring one by my place and leave it for a couple of weeks. They are lots of fun after you get to learn how to use the 3 clutches and 2 brakes properly. I never was instructed, I only watched him operate them and learned that way

    I used to push coal with a D9 for a power station. Had a blade about 16' wide, high sidewalls and a front cutter blade. It would push about 50 tons of coal at a time. Spent 8-14 hours a day on it. Had a 200 gallon fuel tank.

    From the experience our company had with the 9H, and the 9N, they were almost equal, on the ability to push, however the N was much more nanuverable. The 9L was a different story. I once watched a guy use a9L to.pull a 9H with its tracks locked up a 15 degree incline it wasn't even labouring hard. The 9L would have been a real machine, had the transmissions been a little tougher.

    When you see dozers working material like this....with the ripper shank extended all the way back you know you have a someone that has never been taught better. These are meant to be carried with the lower part tucked in as tight as possible for clearance. Note the H model is missing the ripper tooth. That is because it got knocked off way back and now the shank is worthless as a tooth cannot be fitted on it. Two reasons the ripper shank angle is variable. First like mentioned is for clearance and second there is always an angle in between all the way out and in that works best for material that can be ripped. You start with it all the way back for penetration, then rotate forward to the angle that it will work well at. This keeps the ripper tooth from rounding off. When you see operators leaving the shank all the way back even in material that it penetrates decently, that tooth will be dull withing a shift or two making it not nearly as efficient.

      there is an art to ripping rock D9H with the quad ram ripper is a very handy tool the operator works out the best method to get the best results and keep his boot sharp

    Nice video, bro. Not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison. Little known fact: the D9n is NOT the succesor to the D9H. Notice how the HP went from 460 with the D9L to 370 w the D9N?? Its cuz teh D9N replaced teh D8L, the D10N replaced teh D9L, and the D11N replaced the D10. So the D9N is simply an upgraded D8 series and is not truly the successor to the old D9 series. Not many people know this. Cat simply moved each of its dozers up one model # in 1986.

    well I know which of the 2 has the better operator...The H operator actually brings the motor to idle before shifting from forward to reverse...and operators can not figure out why dozer transmissions fail after about 1000 hours...

    • @jacobniece
      @jacobniece 10 років тому +2

      Which is proper? I always bring to idle, not sure if that is right or not.

    • @anthonylucibello67
      @anthonylucibello67 10 років тому +1

      Jacob Niece I say its prober to bring it to an idle then shift

    • @lewiemcneely9143
      @lewiemcneely9143 9 років тому +1

      Jacob Niece Cats take care of themselves in that respect. You can leave them wide open and they'll just take off with a small jolt. I always idle them down some but have seen other guys never touch the decellerator. I wouldn't do that to an I-H or A-C. They'd yank something apart.

    • @Houndini
      @Houndini 9 років тому +1

      Bring down the operating rpm's at least close to idle on all dozers in-between shifting, That how I was taught 25 years ago as Cat diesel mechanic, Cat & few other well respected manufactures now do have solenoids to automatic reduce the tran's presser during trans shifting, but never shift without reducing your engine speed some.. That just show sign's of a very bad rough equipment operator. Smooth & Steady are your best operators. Never put your trust into 1 solenoid or a 50 cent o-ring to do the job for you shifting or for anything else., They do go out time to time. What's better to replace a $175. solenoid or 50 cent o-ring or a 175 thousand dollar complete trans?

    • @lewiemcneely9143
      @lewiemcneely9143 9 років тому +1

      I run a 980-G a lot and it has 21.5k hours on it and only had one valve cover gasket on it. Valves still good- the whole nine yards but it's a rubber-tired machine and it'll jerk a crick in your neck if you down't slow down. Cat can't understand why it's lasted this long. Also over 50k miles. They have a 115 Z-4 that won't shift till you bring it to idle. It also has a 3 second dely built into the tranny that'll drive you crazy till you get used to it. The Cummins in the Z-4 went out at 14k hours but the kitty keeps purring.

    What is the meaning of the D number. I know its the size but do the equate to something? Those are both D9s but don't look like they are based on the same chassis or anything. Is the 9 something to do with weight or the amount of dirt it can move?

    • @ryanhawkins5306

      D stands for Dozer number stands for size, letter stands for series the further letter to the end of the alphabet the newer it is
