the Milton Friedman plan for the Republican Party for the last fifty years worked perfectly: squash unions, get people obsessed with credit financing, increase productivity, freeze wages, and capture maximal profits at the top. They call it economics but it's only version of economics hand-selected at University of Chicago by conservatives to maximize the power of what seemed then like smaller more innovative industrial companies whose interests were purely aligned with poison and profit and use people as fuel and targets. Pure textbook supply-side victory. Then by the 90s they got Republicans like Hillary Rodham and her centrist Southerner hubby Bill to do the bidding of WalMart primarily and other large businesses by turning the once labor-aligned Democrat Party into a fiscally conservative clone of the 1980s Republican Party also strong on defense and crime and basically taking away any rational need at all for a political party to exist rightward of the Democratic Party. They thought that would lead to dominant power. Instead it just shifted the Overton-Window far rightward and eliminated representation for the center-left and made public enemies of the twenty-five percent of Americans actually on the left, like Academics, artists, writers, labor organizers, intellectual progressives, etc. So for thirty years there's one been one liberal Senator and two liberal members of Congress drowned out by the center-right in the Democrat Party and the far-right anti-American white-separatist Christian-nationalist radical religious revolution party has had half the political power with only a quarter of the people. People acted like Obama was a radical socialist just because he was down the line perfectly-middle centrist who would have been considered more conservative than 100% of the elected Democrats of the 1980s and more conservative than many of the moderate Republicans back then from places like Rhode Island and New Jersey and California and Washington and Oregon that we consider so blue-state now. If you want a singular cause or person to blame I can get it down to about five key players. Milton Friedman, Dick Cheney, and Rupert Murdoch as the most culpable and powerfully prolific sources of ruin for the American worker. The Clintons by kissing Republican butt and doing what they would have done and leaving the liberal Democrats to go extinct are the less culpable but utterly central players in the process as well, along with Reagan and the Bushes who did so with glee while Republican money dominating increasingly expensive television based campaigns dragged the Democrat party to find their corporate patrons and fundraising abilities just to keep up and prevent Evangelical blood hungry xenophobes and racists end the American experiment of attempting to achieve liberty and justice for all, to found an official white Christian patriarchal state promotive of rape, war, and exploitation and 1800s agrarian values at home where only the father of the house decides who is having sex with whom when and where, like the Amish, Mormon, Pentecostal, Baptist, and JW cults carry out traditionally today. Sex cults die hard. The Internet can do it. Move everything Leftward to un-do the harms of this sixty-year long Rightward lurch since the last Democrat president, JFK, got his brains blown away for saying there could be peace and freedom in our day.

You’ve identified a problem, but not a solution. “These kinds of discussions” are about understanding the causes of the problem and trying to find solutions.
The term ‘terrorist’ has never been helpful. Hamas certainly used horrifying tactics, but they are still the main force fighting on behalf of the Palestinians. So prefacing a cease-fire and mutually-agreed peace with the “total elimination of Hamas” is contradictory and extremely crude. No one agrees with their enemies, that’s why there is a conflict. But peace requires accepting one’s enemies, trusting them, and eventually forgiving them. Think of it this way, if Israel’s response to the attack had been compassion for the desperation of Gazan’s, followed by an enormous effort at reconciliation and good faith initiatives to achieve a mutually beneficial solution - Israel would have kept the worlds sympathy, and gained enormous respect for responding to their suffering and loss with radical empathy. This would have effectively made Hamas irrelevant, and ensured the hostages would be returned, further shaming the use of such tactics. Unfortunately, acting thoughtfully, and maturely, is not the modus operandi of the extreme right anywhere.
My background is Irish Catholic. I really think Israel is always given a pass because they say it is Hamas. Very familiar. It was always the IRA being violent as the narrative and now it is always Hamas. This is so predictable and only political manipulation. Most countries understand this now.
Hamas is a terrorist organisation, let's not pretend that it isn't. But Israel is using that as an excuse to hit areas with bombs so they won't have to go in with troops. It is lazy, dangerous and entirely unacceptable considering the predictable civilian casualties that follow. Hamas caused this, but have helped to expose Israel's incompetent and compassionless government A two state solution is the only realistic path to peace

Good insights on the difficulties any US leader would have negotiating a peace between Israel and Hamas: Netanyahu is incentivized to sabotage the peace to blame it on Hamas and legitimize his ongoing leadership of Israel while Hamas leaders are incentivized to sabotage the peace because they think their anti-Israel cause benefits from prolonged violence making Israel look bad. FATHERS OF NEWBORNS HAVE SO MUCH TO OFFER: CHANGE A DIAPER, GIVE MOM A BREAK, FEED MOM HEALTHY, NOURISHING FOODS, CLEAN UP, ENCOURAGE HER, HELP HER RECOVER FROM MAJOR ABDOMINAL SURGERY- MEN NEED TO STOP TELLING THEMSELVES THAT THEY DON’T HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY WITH NEWBORNS! I love listening to PSA but I cringe to hear adult men shrugging off the care of a newborn as mom’s sole responsibility.
I don't really think that's what Tommy was saying at all. I think he's pointing out that he is most useful to his wife and his son by taking care of his daughter. He's just saying that his role is not the same and he's not as useful in the same way as his wife is to his son which is valid. It's not like he's saying that all of the responsibility of the household is on his wife I think the most helpful thing he could be doing right now is to take care of their other young child but everyone wants to get their knickers in a Twist about that for some reason.... I don't know it just seems like they have worked out a system that works for them and the rest of us should mind our fucking business. 😂
That’s not what he said! He said that when you have a newborn and an older kid, automatically, the dad will be spending the most time taking care of the older kid to help his wife. Because his wife is breastfeeding, it’s logical that dad will make sure the toddler is occupied. That’s what we always did, too. Obviously, with the first, you’re both taking care of the baby and the dad will (or should) take care of the mom above all. When we had our second, our first was 21 months old, so my husband spent most of his time taking care of our eldest so I could focus on resting and breastfeeding. That doesn’t mean the dad doesn’t help with the baby at all, just that he spends more time taking care of the toddler and household. When our youngest was born, the eldest 2 were 5 and 3 years old, so that’s a different dynamic because they were already more independent and could play together. But still, for the period my husband was home, and during the weekends, he spent more time with them, so I could focus on the baby. It was the same for all of my friends, whether hetero or lesbian, the partner tended to focus on the older child(ren).

Having lived in Mexico during the interminable reign of the PRI, the election of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is amazing, a real dig at the macho corruption inherent to Mexican politics. For all its current troubles, Mexico remains a potential economic powerhouse, long overdue for some of the greatest, friendliest people I've ever known.
Months ago, Jamie Raskin brought up " Banana Republic " in Congress in another context. The Repugnacans have wanted to use it against the Democrats for a while.
Loved today’s episode! Just a little comment on the whole Claudia Sheinbaum situation… I’ve heard from most women I know, and I believe this as well, she continuously left women alone during her mandate in CMDX. Mexico City is absolutely hostile to us. Around 11 women/girls (literally, 7year olds) are killed everyday and she even refused to talk about it during one of the debates saying ¨there are other and more important things to talk about¨. So for must women here the general understanding is: We recognize and endorse the fact that we finally have a female president, but we know we’re not part of her agenda.
Can we talk about how Farage says he's running because the election has been too boring so far, and not any policy concerns or ideas? Just, "excuse me, but we need this to be more of a clown show, so here I am... anyone want honk my nose?"

Every week this war can be extended by Russia gets a bit weaker. What do you think the whole thing's been about? Because it sure as heck isn't about helping Ukraine.

So close, yet we know more about what's going on in Israel/Gaza and Ukraine than right here. Drugs, guns, murders effect all of us. Eg: Tie-ins to fentanyl deaths; Mexico's lawsuit against American gun manufacturers, etc... so much important stuff that effects us all!

If we want to be able to project power in that part of the world (which we definitely do, especially since the Suez Canal is over there), then it really is in our (and all of the Western World's) interest to maintain fairly close ties with Israel. No matter how big of a pain in our backside they can sometimes be.
It would be a different story if there was any other potential ally in the region, that could be as strong an ally to us as Israel. Unfortunately, there currently is not.
Sorry but my fave Ben getting fired up is as entertaining as it is informative
Great episode. I appreciate your hard work and expertise.
World reacts to Trump guilty verdict? All you're doing is talking about Gaza. Thank you but I know enough to know why you're doing that.
Great world summary, from a US point of view. But how did the world react to Trump's verdict? You didn't say (excepting from his freaky friends.)
K-POP is Korea engaging with the world, actively seeking the approval and inclusion in the world community. Blasting that music at the DMZ is a political statement- and a pie in the face for the North.
The last interview..., So finally we can talk about building up the Americas with their own economies and governments. I'm 59, grew up 50 miles from the borDer, and I was four the first time I went to Tijuana. I have been hearing the fight within our own U.S. Congress to not do this and ACTIVELY worked to keep the Americas as continued developing nations status to exploit for the U.S.'s benefit. The Iran - Contra hearings was in the mid 80'. The assasinations of political leaders since the mid 60"s. The Conquest! This POV and action will only take place if Biden wins, folks! Please VOTE!
Lovett as a Kpop balloon 😂
Having lived in Mexico during the interminable reign of the PRI, the election of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is amazing, a real dig at the macho corruption inherent to Mexican politics. For all its current troubles, Mexico remains a potential economic powerhouse, long overdue for some of the greatest, friendliest people I've ever known.
Months ago, Jamie Raskin brought up " Banana Republic " in Congress in another context. The Repugnacans have wanted to use it against the Democrats for a while.
Thank you! For preaching to the choir about banana republics being misbehavior by the USA.
Really enjoyed this week’s interview with Dan Restrepo, hope you guys have him back again
Ben Rhodes looks nothing like i imagined from hearing his on the podcast. My brain is having trouble catching up with my eyes.
As much as I don't like Nigel, hes not wrong about the UK election being boring😅
June Eve 11th & 12th is Shavuot, that Jewish Holiday not the 13th.
"What happened?" Bribes, lmao.
Whoopsie doopsie 😂
Please interview Lt. General Ben Hodges regarding Ukraine.
Can you bring on some military experts then because this doomerism on what's militarily possible is infuriating.
✨Lovett is a k-pop balloon✨
Can we talk about how Farage says he's running because the election has been too boring so far, and not any policy concerns or ideas? Just, "excuse me, but we need this to be more of a clown show, so here I am... anyone want honk my nose?"
It's kinda ridiculous to keep calling this guy "Bibi"...
Well, at least you're saying both parties suck, which PSA won't say. Why don't I feel like doing a victory lap?
51:58 - Never thought I'd agree with Kim Jong Un. Broken clock, i guess.
There has to be a huge strategic level team (big picture) with the US executive branch part of government trying to find the best outcome. It might be naïve to think it will be straight forward process to resolve it for good. These are also a huge targets of opportunity to authoritarian propagandists around the world - like it or not it everything in the geopolitical realm gets connected - even though it seems largely tangential. I write a lot about this - and will continue doing so. I’ll be reaching out to you soon.
Hi!
Schumer and Hakeem need the money for the Democratic party.
Thanks for giving some sanity to today's world events.
Are poop ballons technically bioweapons?
Ben wanted to say until trump is dead so bad at 26:56
Welcome back new to Tommy dad
Your little aside @20:30 saying 'don't be mean to Matt Miller - he's just saying what he's told to say' was pathetic. Every individual within the admin is responsible for their role in denying war crimes and providing cover for ethnic cleansing - it really doesn't matter if he's your friend or not.
This channel can only be US-centric. This is why these people cannot stop saying Hamas are terrorists but Israel is not.
Exactly. How many Nazis claimed they were just following orders?
I mean the Pod Save guys aren’t journalists, they’re unofficial DNC consultants monetizing their access to sell products on UA-cam.
L
Nice to see you back together.
But why after 21/2 years of attempting to limit their attacks to valid military targets, would Ukraine suddenly decide to bomb civilian targets like Moscow ?
Er ... because the USA told them to? Thanks to extending this war as the long as it possibly can, the USA pretty much OWNS Ukraine now.
They didn’t suddenly decide this. They’ve been asking for permission for a while now. The prolonged stalemate has probably made them desperate.
Ukraine will do whatever the US tells it to. By this stage of the war, the US effectively owns it.
Every week this war can be extended by Russia gets a bit weaker. What do you think the whole thing's been about? Because it sure as heck isn't about helping Ukraine.
Great episode. Good overview on Mexico, -- please continue more on our complicated southern neighbor in future.
Post-Traumpa or Post-Trumpa?
Koreans are hilarious!😆😆
first
American propaganda and lies 😂😂😂
Inviting Bibi to speak to Congress isn't a self-own IF he uses the opportunity to agree to a peace deal. I truly hope that's what's going to happen.
You can't possibly have your head buried that deep.
🤣
There is no scenario that Israel will accept Hamas’s continued control of Gaza.
Imagine the US after 9/11 invading Afghanistan and then after not even a year returning the Taliban back to power.
What did it mean when you said about Mex Pres "She's a bit of a black box..." ??? Ah, got it: opacity
Guys, Joe looks just terrible! :(
He is terrible. Nobody like Biden. The only hope is that just barely enough people recognize the threat Trump poses to eke out 271 electors
And don't forget how he sounds.
3:20 And Joe is no longer capable of saying "capable".
Guys, you're losing a listener.
Bye.
Am so sick of Ben Rhodes pro Hamas stand.
At first I thought you were being ironic, but.. No, you're not, are you? 🤔
It's pro humanity...says a lot that you can see that.
The world laughs at this joke and his silly cult ! What a waste of time !
The problem is 100% of US's bicameral congress is all in with the silly cult.
